The suspension is hard... if you dont take care of it (like i don't take care and drive to fast over bad roads), some parts will start to rattle... I have the 2011 'sport' 1.8l manual. I had to change the starter because it was spining after the engine was on (in cold temperatures), and shock absorbers, coils and strut mount bearings (and did wheel bearing, but shouldn't because they turned out to be in perfect condition, i was paranoid)... and after some months (now) something started being noisy again... so yeah. For me it has not been a 0 problems ride... but i enjoy the driving a lot.
I was in High School and sat in a DMC12 on the showroom floor in 1981. In my opinion , It's the greatest design of any car. Thank you for taking us on a drive...so exciting!
The only real reason preventing me from buying one of these previously and today is the attention. It is a nice thing to share with people, but a bit much for me personally. A guy near me has one though and I much prefer being the gawker instead!
One thing id say on the commin problems is, that because they've been around so long and theyre so known, you can just im a majority of mk8 civic groups, mention your problem, and someone will have an immediate answer, eg aircon not working, if the condenser is good and holding gas, its likely the relay, which is cheap to replace Also lots of info on ghe boot leaks, the community is very helpful
The CD player also plays DVD’s on the screen. Use the number 2 to go up and 6 down etc… Hotpsot your phone to the cars WiFi and you can have weather information with the globe button and if you leave the NAV on it’ll give you live traffic updates via colour coding on the map. I’m assuming it’s the same entertainment system as my V40. Your passenger seat might have two little levers at the bottom of the back rest where you can fold it flat for longer items. You do have to lower the seat to lodge the headrest under the glovebox to keep it down flat though 😊
I'm just after buying a 1.3 6 speed manuel 2008 Honda Civic with a blown headgasket as my first road legal car, Only drove it around the parking lot I bought it in and it was exteremly nice to drive I love it arleady.
I’ve picked up a V70 d5 a couple years ago. Love it, so comfortable. Lovely place to be. £4k, puts a smile on my stupid big fat face every time I drive her!!! Yes it’s a bit thirsty around town and the steering is a bit of a workout at times but she’s an absolute beauty!!! Love a Volvo, they just work.
Well you haven't watched the review, good sir! I thought the same until I drove this one. It was easily as enjoyable to drive as the 1982 911 SC I drove (a very well sorted version of that too)! Admittedly it's been modified from its original state, but that's the point really - 40 years on hardly any after restoration are reflecting the original state they left the factory in. It's capable of a lot more than the car that rolled out the factory!
@@maxfactor4209 As I say in the video it seems that no two are the same now. This particular one has the euro engine (more powerful), a full stainless steel exhaust system and an extra 30bhp +loads more torque than standard + it's been to a Lotus specialist and had its coilovers properly sorted + corner weighting too. So the combination means it drives genuinely really well! I can imagine with the stock US engine at 130bhp, the standard restrictive exhaust and wobbly suspension it would be disappointing
Finally a review of the DeLorean as an actual classic car and not a movie prop joke! The movie is certainly a major part of the DeLorean's identity now, but there is soo much more to appreciate about it. And yeah, late '70s/early '80s cars in general were a bit shit from a performance and quality perspective. But styling/design was pretty awesome! Anyway... It doesn't take all that much to address most of the issues the DeLorean suffered from and which led to its generally poor reputation, relatively speaking. And now that they're beginning to be worth some proper money, it's becoming more justifiable to invest in restoration and/or mild improvements like this one has had. It's great to see a DeLorean review with a properly sorted DeLorean 👍👍
It's pretty rare to watch a video on an air cooled Porsche where the presenter is usually either Porsche biased, or a hater that shoots them down after listening to all the usual BS associated with old Porsches when they haven't driven one. As an owner of a '78 (albeit backdated by myself), I'm glad you got to drive one and now realise why owners love them, as once you understand what these cars are all about, you'll always have that little voice in the back of your mind wondering how you can own one! Nice one mate 👍
Our neighbours had a 2.5 and we showed interest in it. Took us for a test drive. Soon a 3.2s was on our drive. Amazing car. That engine! The noise. What to replace it with. 987 of course. But for some reason it lacked the magic of the 986. Ironically a custom exhaust made the engine too boomy and lost that lovely bark. Sound means a lot with these. Also it handled too well. Felt too composed. Couldnt get anywhere near the limit whereas 986 felt like you could. So it went and dad now has AMG SLK 55 AMG. 5.5 litre V8. Sounds even better although I have to say the Porsche has better handling. The Merc feels more like a muscle car. It's got amazing character.
Beautiful car. Car prices for used cars in the UK seem to be way way lower than in germany. A 8gen Civic like this with a leather interior + a roof like this seems to be 8000 or 9000€++ lol. Pretty crazy that you'ge got this for half the price in the UK. Lovely car.
Hahaha this is great news! I SO nearly kept it just as an outtake at the ending thinking it'd risk just coming across as a clown hahaha. So this is great news! Welcome aboard!
The Lotus Esprit's American cousin. As mentioned in the video, the DMC-12 has a chassis based on the Esprit. The main difference is that the front is a Y shape that is the location for the fuel tank on the DeLorean, unlike the Esprit that has twin tanks either side of the front of the engine at the rear. The DMC-12 was developed at Hethel. The original concept was for a car with a composite chassis, but it was found that that wasn't going to work, so the car ended up with a backbone chassis derived from the Esprit.
Funny thing... On the reliability point - in this generation car, its that VEA 4-cyl diesel you called the "pick of the bunch" thats the one to avoid. Later years they've become reliable, but they had expensive teething pains - the 5-cylinders are the ones to go for, and honestly the D5 with a manual box and a little care is surprisingly more economical than the D3/D4. Great cars.
Oh yeah absolutely, I think I mention somewhere in this video that the 5 cylinder are more reliable. The Volvo specialist Horton Cars that I've visited since filming this video also really sang the praises of the last of the 5 cylinders being rock solid. I'm enjoying the D3 far more than I thought I would!
Very interesting BUT, as you pointed out, this is now a modified and improved car. The cars reputation stems from contemporary road tests of the day. I especially recall reading that of CAR magazine from 1981 - which also contained the first impressions of the Lotus Esprit NA S3. Not to put too fine a point on it, the DeLorean was slower, didn't handle as well and (IIRC) was more expensive. I bought the Esprit and absolutely loved it. I kinda wish I'd never sold that car but that's another story... The Stainless Steel panels on the DMC-12 were/are a fingerprint magnet (for those with that particular OCD) and potential repairs could have been/be a bit of a challenge. Interior quality was probably par for the course for an early 80's car. My Esprit was cloth trimmed and I'd say 'different' rather than 'better'. 160 BHP was enough for a car to feel brisk even in the 90's. The Esprit was rated at 160BHP and it's handling meant that corner speeds could be maintained and ground covered very quickly. That DeLorean is probably similar. Fiesta STs & Hyundai i20Ns are similar weight to the DeLorean but have 200+ BHP - so you wouldn't buy one for ultimate performance. I think that DeLorean looks pretty cool and has obviously been well maintained/cared for. I'd love to try that one and see how I felt about it. Watching Pedestrian heads turn as you drove past shows what 'theatre' it creates on the road. Magic! The only thing I'd have to fix is the creaky clutch pedal/return spring - which would drive (no pun intended..) me nuts. Or was that just the Flux Capacitor engaging? Loved the Doug Demuro impression and very glad it wasn't him..
Oh completely, I totally agree re: it's reputation being valid from its contemporary road tests. I just think it's interesting how *now* they're likely to have been improved simply by restoration with better parts over the 40 years, but we all assume they'll still drive like floppy, sloppy slow ones from the 80s. Love the flux capacitor comment too hahahaha!
The DeLorean is my dream car, I have wanted one my whole life but I can't afford it so I had to settle for a 2020 Miata RF GT, but someday I'll have my DeLorean..
Ooooooo that 2020 Miata RF GT is a superb car in its own right, I'd absolutely love to have one of those one day! Am I correct in saying that it was 2019 when they raised the power up to about 182bhp?
the biggest issue with this car was the expectations from the public. Because John built the GTO, people really seemed to think this car would be another one of those. These cars are sports cars, they are meant to just be fun to drive. The other big issue is most of them sit and don't get driven. The overall experience of driving one is a lot of fun. I'm over 6 foot tall, and about 290 lbs, and I can fit in and just enjoy. They really are a lot of fun. The nice thing about these cars is how easy you can still open the doors if someone parks really close to you. The only downside to one of these cars that really is hard to deal with..........if you drive a time machine one.....the time circuits switch get's in the way while shifting gears, along with the temporal time display. If you don't hold the gear shift correctly you can hurt your hand. Also, there is nowhere to rest your hand/arm while driving. That's about the worse, overall they really are fun, fun cars.
What are your thoughts on a well-sorted DeLorean? Would you prefer a 911SC or which other classic would you buy for £50-70k? No one falls out of love with an MX-5, especially an NC, no one. Looked great beside exotic cars the day it came out, doesn’t look out of place with them even today.
I agree, I miss mine a lot since letting it go! I think it was the feeling of... I could really do with the money out of the car + lower overheads, and are these only several special drives a year worth all the cost? But now that I'm doing much better financially and could comfortably afford to run both I don't think the 'downsides' would have the same effect on me, you know? The BBR200 I just reviewed on the channel was SPECTACULAR. And that is where I'll one day have to throw a big chunk of money!
@@petrolpoodle I think the BBR package on any MX5 is for sure a huge improvement. At the back of my mind I’d almost have the money to do the supercharger, but I really want to stay close to the original concept performance wise. With a few little changes like mine, a proper intake and exhaust system 😄
Thanks so much mate! The ATOTO F7+ I think was the name but it's discontinued and my hindsight now is that I wish I'd gone for a branded one for that little extra bump in call quality, music quality + screen brightness
