Did anyone else watch this match? From 53.50, when Graf served at 30-15 and sliced an ASV return and the commentary stated that the ball was in and the screen showed 40-15 on Graf serve, yet the ref announced it as 30 all. Did the ref call the shot out because Graf had to serve twice afterwards to win the game? Confused?
Someone else mentioned this a few years ago…it’s hard to tell if there was an out call because the commentator yells at that moment, perhaps the ball was out and the commentator was wrong, but it is interesting, the players didn’t question the score…
The ball was indeed called out and most probably rightfully so since Steffi didn't protest. Many people just don't understand how imprecise such a TV screen is. See those Hingis fans who still maintain that her controversial ball in the FO 99 final was "clearly in". Even though in that case the ball was on the far side of the TV camera.
80s & 90s were golden years for German tennis. 1985 saw Boris Becker becoming the youngest Wimbledon Champion in history at just 17 years of age. In 1988 we had Steffi Graf's historic Golden Grand Slam. 1989 produced a German double at Wimbledon with both Boris & Steffi taking out the Singles titles. That year also saw Germany win the Davis Cup for the 2nd year running In 1991 we had an all-German Wimbledon mens final with Michael Stich getting the better of Boris. At the same time Germany were reigning World Cup champions in Football and Michael Schumacher was about to unleash his record breaking career...a very memorable period for German sport in general

I would praise Steffi for playing again within 8 weeks after that small stab would had healed. And I would whine a bit about Seles having been lucky AGAIN after the Graf Blackmail Scandal gifted her about 5 slam titles more than she deserved already.

@@planettennis2822 The verdict would have been roughly the same in all major Western European countries according to most law experts. In Germany the intent to kill must be proven "beyond a reasonable doubt". Weird concept for many, I know.
I love STEFFI... but even I will say that 1992 Wimbledon didn't count because of idiots at Wimbledon who told Seles she couldn't be herself and had to stop her NATURAL grunting. As she has said and written, it's her biggest regret. It's nice that Wimbledon has evolved - we just need to get rid of the all white dress code now. Just odd.
Don't know about "camps", but Stubbs was and still is a good friend of Steffi's. Steffi probably knew that Stubbs is a lesbian and apparently didn't care. Maybe they even had an affair...? I would not mind at all in case even though I would have preferred a Steffi/Gaby fling. What a thought....😍😍😜
Yes, Seles owes her 9 slams only to Steffi being absent or in a deep slump. I rate players like Austin, Hingis, Henin and even Venus Williams higher than her.
Knowledgeable male commentator picked Novotna to win the tournament ...he knew what he was talking about! Monica looked intense and focused here...I liked seeing her with the braid!

In early 93 Steffi had these major results: AO semis: 75 64 win against Sanchez (13-9 games) AO final: 64 36 26 loss to Seles (11-16 games) Tokyo final (one week later): 64 36 36 loss to Navratilova (12-16 games) But in early 94 Steffi had these: AO final: 60 62 win against Sanchez (12-2 games) Tokyo final: 62 64 win against Navratilova (12-6 games) Even my 4-ear-old daughter could conclude how a Seles rematch at the AO 94 would have looked like. An easy win for Steffi - 63 64 for instance (12-7 games). You maroon know that of course. But still want to troll other tennis fans with your hate. Despicable.

Monica seles who either beat graf or took out the players that beat graf ... same with the french open and us open.. graf won those slams for the first time in four years as well since seles was out.. the evidence is clear :()
@@bryguy0111 In 1989 Steffi was 86-2 win/loss. In 1991 Steffi was 65-8 win/loss. In the 12 weeks after the stabbing Steffi was 80-2 win/loss. So it was only about whether Steffi was playing at her peak or slumping. Not about Seles. She just profited.
As I've said before, I am a fan of Tennis, not an individual. I am not prejudice against Germans. I'm married to a German woman, drive a German car, consider Boris Becker s great player. That said, Graf's status in tennis is tainted. All her wins after Monica was stabbed are questionable because Monica would have won several of those tournaments if she could have played. As for looks, I know any man who wasn't a fan of Graf would laugh if you asked him if Graf was pretty. She is plain looking at best. Not attractive in any sense. Pretty is Maria, Ana Ivanovic, Camila Giorgi. They are 10's. Graf is at best a 3.
Serena is the GOAT why? Her all around play. Steffi (as many of those who have played her has said) has that killer forehand. That is mainly what you have to watch for. Serena on the other hand has everything to watch for. By the way.... when was Steffi not good?

Never better seen than the time she literally threatened to stuff a tennis ball down the throat of a lineswoman. With plenty of expletives. Networks tried their best to kill all copies of that audio. But some people in the crowd had recorded it. I think Serena said the F word four times during that tirade and then she was SHOCKED when the lineswoman told the chair ump Serena had threatened her. Incredible. That's Serena. Spoiled to the core.

Steffi's coach, Heinz Günthardt, was furious with her after this match. Given how good her form had been throughout the tournament, this performance was a baffling error strewn mess. Steffi herself said she got cramp in her hand, which is very often a sign of extreme nerves. Chris Evert had a similar incident at the US Open once when she had got so tight that she couldn't take the racquet out of her hand after the match and had to ask Mary Carillo to do it for her before the on court interview. Arantxa was as dogged as ever here, and continuing her excellent hard court success that had begun in 1992.
