Thanks for this podcast! I'm hoping to take a course at Harvard this summer with Mary on Introvert leadership. This podcast helped me feel more confident and excited going into the course.
As a SIL member, I've worked on my communication toolset to ensure I'm stoking more convos than I'm killing. Having just recently participated in a high-stakes, crucial convo that I had little control over, I'm sitting with the observation that I am a fight kinda gal. When I feel psychologically unsafe, unheard, and unappreciated, I go into fight or flight mode and I fight. And then the convo feels awful for me and I feel I've lost. So I'm sitting with that for now and owning it. Then I get to decide how to not go into ForF mode and how to make a more rational decision about what (if any outcomes) I can get from these types of mtgs.
Love how you said about trust as a focus. I would love a video about dealing with very difficult conversations e.g. C-suite member discrediting or distrusting a new Chief Audit Executive who would be auditing that member's processes, or navigating politics among C-suite, C-suite putting you under undue pressure etc. Am sure you have lots of good examples from your career. Love to hear! and thank you!
I have to share with you all that I read the title like this: Smart Goals. DON’T Work for Women. (“Whaa, why don’t I want to work for women?”🤔🤔 😂 I am getting close to bedtime at the moment, funny.)
“Make sure to lower the bar for those who are not white because they are not capable of achieving the same things under the same circumstances” this is racism. You are treating other races as if they are less than. I refuse to comply with this stupidity.
Fake it till you make it doesn’t work if we are not fully invested in our project. Also, faking too much can trigger imposter syndrome. Thank you for the episode Jill!
Amazing episode. I especially liked the part of having to reinvent ourselves and acquire the new skills for the job we want to perform. We many times forget that those skills and that reinvention needs to be a gradual process rather than an abrupt one. Better to start today with small steps forward. Thank you Jill!
Such an interesting episode. I particularly like when you mention that you connect with people through humility. I agree, it’s a trait very few posses and that can be very powerful when trying to create rapport. Thank you Jill!
Thank you Jill for this incredibly interesting podcast. It helps us understand the challenges that women go through as well as how they manage to successfully overcome them.
Complying with what “executive presence” is asumed to be can push us to lose our authenticity. And that is something we should never compromise. Thank you Jill for sharing with us other more suitable ways to think about this.
Statements like “you don’t fit into the mold”, “you’re too soft”, “you lack the leadership traits”…all of those are a reflection of the person’s insecurities. But I know from experience that they can be very hurtful and most of all, that if we believe in them they can be very damaging to our self worth. Let’s block them and move on. Thank you Jill for the great episode!
Glad you liked the episode. It's human to project ourselves on others, it's up to us to not take that as fact and see for ourselves if we think there is any truth to it.
Congratulations Jill and Carissa for this great episode. Your suggestion to go through the program before taking any decision is not only wise but could be transformational.
One other thought- Decision trees are a great use case for Gen Chat AI like ChatGPT. Of course, you’d have to ensure due diligence by prompting correctly and using a plug-in like Scholarai and a browser extension for immediacy.
What an amazing episode! Congrats Jill and Sara. I like when you speak about weaknesses. It helps me re-think my relationship with my own weaknesses. And thank you for the supporting material you highlight in the video. I’ll make sure to take a look at it.
Just what I needed to hear today, My confidence has been shaken, but realize I’ve never had a mentor just a manager as a moved into leadership, Failure can be freedom to try again
So glad that you are finding some inspiration. I encourage you to do the Zone of Brilliance exercise in the show notes, it will help you to bounce back.
Very inspiring episode. Thanks for sharing Jill. It was interesting to learn how Monica was being challenged by the system all the time and how she managed to overcome some of the issues.
Shocking figures. Your podcast is welcomed not only because of how interesting the topics you cover are, but especially because it sheds light on issues like this as well as on practical solutions for everybody. Thank you Jill for sharing!
Love that you share what didn’t work - I find myself using those same ‘techniques’ with little impact. Glad I’m not the only one 😅 appreciate the roadmap steps for change!
Great information, Jill. Your point around developing professional trust rather than likability with your peers was an eye opener. Would love some tips on how to do that. Thank you for imparting your knowledge and helping women achieve leadership positions.
