As a 4-year old in 1974, my parents could not afford to send me to pre-school. So I watched lots of Sesame Street and Play School with my stay at home mother. Back in 1974 only 5-10% of 4-year olds went to pre-school! Still to this day, pre-school and all its issues (cost, rebates, age of entry, what is taught at pre-school and universal access, if any is wanted!) is still heavily debated here in Australia. But one pretty side bonus of this is that I watched the Socceroos play all three games at the 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany on full replay! But the Socceroos went on a 32-year drought and I said "If they made another FIFA World Cup in my lifetime I will buy Sesame Street CD's". On 17/11/2005, a day after this match I brought two Sesame Street CD's.
Ever since that night on November 16, 2005 and up until Japan broke that hoodoo during 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying, Sydney's Stadium Australia was a good luck charm for the Socceroos. Australia clinched three of their five straight FIFA World Cups including 2005 against Uruguay and outlasting South Korea in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup Final.
I still thank my brother in-law for taking me to the game all those years ago. Magical night, great football and the piss-up to end all piss-ups. Magnificent video.
I went to the 2006 World Cup in Germany because I was so captivated by the golden generation… Covid another challenges made me drift away from sport the last couple of years and in particular the Socceroos and right now I am filled with the most delicious regret… What an outstanding story what an outstanding group of young men
As a Uruguayan I remember this match quite well. I was so frustrated watching it. That was probably one of the worst moments in our football history, but that match also changed everything. Finally, our football association brought in a good manager whom not only worked with the major team but also with the U17 and U20 teams. He, Mr Washington Tabarez convince them to invested in infrastructure creating a modern training complex and our football returned to the place from which it should never have left. So actually i not only congratulate the Aussies on that victory, now with perspective I learn to appreciate it. You did us both a favor. I wish you the best in Qatar !!
Australia, instead, has gone backwards and is still - no one knows exactly how - punching well above its weight. Saludos a los mejores rivales de los últimos 20 años.
This Aussie team was loaded with talents, guts and experience. Mark Viduka, Mark Schwarzer, John Aloisi, Neill, Harry Kewell, Bresciano, Brett Emerton, Popovic, Vidmar and Tim " the boxer" Cahill
Probably our best ever chance, because it was our best ever team with our best ever coach. And we did go deep. What a brilliant journey it was.I will remember it for the rest of my life !!!
Peru getting 5th with Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Ecuador in CONMEBOL is impressive, should’ve automatically qualified. Colombia getting 6th with those teams including Peru is also impressive, automatic qualify. Chile getting 7th with those teams is alright but they should’ve played against Australia, not Peru. The top 6 South American teams all deserve better especially the 5th place and 6th place
I watch this match and bresciano goal was amazing, i always remember that moment. Always nice to see the underdog kill the giant. Hope indonesia will get there one day
Like I said before, Peru should’ve automatically qualified, FIFA dosent know how hard it is to get even 5th in CONMEBOL with the likes of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and sometimes Ecuador or Colombia. Getting 5th with those teams is not easy at all and it’s already good enough to qualify, even in 6th, Colombia should’ve qualified and 7th, Chile instead should’ve played Australia since they are the same level as them, Australia winning on penalties against Peru is just barely winning, if it was 2-legged, Peru would’ve won, because they are superior and every top 6 South American team is.
congratulations to Australia for your achievement against Peru to go to world cup 2022; As a Vietnamese, I am proud that 3/5 teams above us in third round qualification goes to world cup, this time an Asia team defeated a Commebol team
Conmebol should have more teams they shouldn’t need to play teams like Australia, the reason why is because in Conmebol you have Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia/Ecuador who automatically take the top 4. 5th would be a battle between Colombia, Ecuador, Peru & Chile. They play harder teams and getting 5th is good enough it should be a automatically qualify. In my opinion Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador & Chile are all superior to the likes of Australia and every Asian federation team except for maybe Japan and South Korea but all of the top 7 teams of Conmebol would easily qualify if they were put in any other qualifier spots.
It's definitely a great story here, but I always wondered which team would of replaced australia in brazils group in this world cup if Uruguay made it instead since Uruguay is in the same confederation as brazil and can't be in the same group as them.
One day india will also play im fifa wc a big football giant is growing like cricket how india dominate over all big teams same they will do with football hope !!
Congratulations Australia!!!!🇦🇺 As a Kiwi supporter who saw our team get shafted, go and ROAR!!! Our corner of the World is not the pushovers we once were!!! Create havoc!!! See you in September for a "Friendly", ...bring your game face! SALUTE TO THE OCKERS!
2022 Australian soccer results in World cup qualify : 3:0, 1:1 China, 1:0,4:0 Vietnam, 3:1,2:2 Oman, 1:2,0:2 Japan, 0:0 , 0:1 Saudi Arabia . Then they have to versus UAE and Peru in play off. Let's pray for them even we know it's very tough to them. cause this socceroo team strength is far away from 2005s'. Do you believe they can make it? like my comment if you do.
As a Panamanian fan I can relate on what you guys felt that night after so many failures...It happened the same to us, failing to qualify being that close and to finally qualify to a World Cup in Russia 2018, what a moment dor us.
I'm Australian and this documentary is absolutely great. I'm so proud to be Australian. This was the best and the most beautiful moment of Australian sports history 💛💚🇦🇺
