As a Uruguayan I remember this match quite well. I was so frustrated watching it. That was probably one of the worst moments in our football history, but that match also changed everything. Finally, our football association brought in a good manager whom not only worked with the major team but also with the U17 and U20 teams. He, Mr Washington Tabarez convince them to invested in infrastructure creating a modern training complex and our football returned to the place from which it should never have left. So actually i not only congratulate the Aussies on that victory, now with perspective I learn to appreciate it. You did us both a favor. I wish you the best in Qatar !!
Australia, instead, has gone backwards and is still - no one knows exactly how - punching well above its weight. Saludos a los mejores rivales de los últimos 20 años.
This Aussie team was loaded with talents, guts and experience. Mark Viduka, Mark Schwarzer, John Aloisi, Neill, Harry Kewell, Bresciano, Brett Emerton, Popovic, Vidmar and Tim " the boxer" Cahill
15 years on, it's still - cue tears. The scenes in my bay behind the goal - sheer bedlam! The atmosphere was easily the best of any game I've attended.
I rotate between watching this, the documentary on November 16 and The day Australia Became A Football Nation because I am so in love with this game, it brings tears to my eyes everytime.
you all probably dont give a damn but does someone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost my login password. I would love any tips you can give me.
You and I both. No one can call football unAustralian anymore because that night is the loudest I’ve ever heard the national anthem sang by a crowd. Still gives me goosebumps and tears.
*dream on my friend, australia win a world cup?kkkkkkkkk..it's impossible, there isn't any condition to make it happens, only giants of soccer as Brazil, germany, france, argentina, italy, and spain have condition to do that, sorry to destroy your ilusion, but this is the real true, salute from Brazil..🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷*
I don't know why I shed tears every time I see that Aloisi goal. Well, I do actually: No sporting event that I have ever witnessed matches this for sheer emotion. I had been to the Uruguay game in Melbourne four years earlier and the Iran game four years before that. We had been through such pain and heartache before, we almost expected yet another disappointment that night. But this time, the gods were with us and everything went as right as right can be. Without a doubt, this was Australian football's greatest ever moment.
Sandy Galbraith Australia had a very very great team. Aloisi, Bresciano, Viduka, Cahill, etc.... Beautiful match! Congratulations from the other side of the World.
I'm Australian and this documentary is absolutely great. I'm so proud to be Australian. This was the best and the most beautiful moment of Australian sports history 💛💚🇦🇺
I still thank my brother in-law for taking me to the game all those years ago. Magical night, great football and the piss-up to end all piss-ups. Magnificent video.
i witnessed history i was there & i will never forget. I was in Melbourne for Iran too a few years b4. Heartbreak then but i will never forget the feeling of this moment. What a night.
It was an unforgettable morning (for me since I woke up earlier than usual to watch the match, it started here around 4 am). I could not help feeling so proud and happy for Australian football, you gauys had had many heartbreaks (1998 was so hard) and now it was the moment to shine.
Ever since that night on November 16, 2005 and up until Japan broke that hoodoo during 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying, Sydney's Stadium Australia was a good luck charm for the Socceroos. Australia clinched three of their five straight FIFA World Cups including 2005 against Uruguay and outlasting South Korea in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup Final.
As a Panamanian fan I can relate on what you guys felt that night after so many failures...It happened the same to us, failing to qualify being that close and to finally qualify to a World Cup in Russia 2018, what a moment dor us.
Australia is the example for any nation that came from being nothing to competing with the world class now. Of course they be looking forward to reach quarter final atleast, but being in the world cup regularly at all is something to be proud of.
18/06/2020 time 12;56pm still brings tears to my eyes. i remember my whole day leading up to this game and its one ill never forget. this game represents one of those feel good body escapes still to this day. thank you for the upload.
I went to the 2006 World Cup in Germany because I was so captivated by the golden generation… Covid another challenges made me drift away from sport the last couple of years and in particular the Socceroos and right now I am filled with the most delicious regret… What an outstanding story what an outstanding group of young men
Probably our best ever chance, because it was our best ever team with our best ever coach. And we did go deep. What a brilliant journey it was.I will remember it for the rest of my life !!!
As a 4-year old in 1974, my parents could not afford to send me to pre-school. So I watched lots of Sesame Street and Play School with my stay at home mother. Back in 1974 only 5-10% of 4-year olds went to pre-school! Still to this day, pre-school and all its issues (cost, rebates, age of entry, what is taught at pre-school and universal access, if any is wanted!) is still heavily debated here in Australia. But one pretty side bonus of this is that I watched the Socceroos play all three games at the 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany on full replay! But the Socceroos went on a 32-year drought and I said "If they made another FIFA World Cup in my lifetime I will buy Sesame Street CD's". On 17/11/2005, a day after this match I brought two Sesame Street CD's.
To understand what this moment meant to the Aussies, you have to go back to four years earlier v this same Uruguay team. They won the first leg 1-0 in Melbourne, but then went to Montevideo in the 2nd leg and got hammered 3-0. They had come close two other times: 1993 v Argentina with the now late Diego Maradona leading that squad winning that 2nd leg in Buenos Aires 1-0, and again in 1997 v Iran blowing a late lead at home in Melbourne and the Iranians would advance to France on the 2nd away goal they got in the 79th minute. Needless to say, for the Aussies, this was finally knocking down the door and going to the Big show (World Cup).
@@1969cmp 1997, you gotta close the deal there when you're up 2-0 in the 72nd minute. Not being able to slam the door when you have a chance to do so, is a killer. I can tell 97 was a killer loss for that nation.
Congratulations Australia!!!!🇦🇺 As a Kiwi supporter who saw our team get shafted, go and ROAR!!! Our corner of the World is not the pushovers we once were!!! Create havoc!!! See you in September for a "Friendly", ...bring your game face! SALUTE TO THE OCKERS!
congratulations to Australia for your achievement against Peru to go to world cup 2022; As a Vietnamese, I am proud that 3/5 teams above us in third round qualification goes to world cup, this time an Asia team defeated a Commebol team
Conmebol should have more teams they shouldn’t need to play teams like Australia, the reason why is because in Conmebol you have Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia/Ecuador who automatically take the top 4. 5th would be a battle between Colombia, Ecuador, Peru & Chile. They play harder teams and getting 5th is good enough it should be a automatically qualify. In my opinion Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador & Chile are all superior to the likes of Australia and every Asian federation team except for maybe Japan and South Korea but all of the top 7 teams of Conmebol would easily qualify if they were put in any other qualifier spots.
It's definitely a great story here, but I always wondered which team would of replaced australia in brazils group in this world cup if Uruguay made it instead since Uruguay is in the same confederation as brazil and can't be in the same group as them.
Peru getting 5th with Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Ecuador in CONMEBOL is impressive, should’ve automatically qualified. Colombia getting 6th with those teams including Peru is also impressive, automatic qualify. Chile getting 7th with those teams is alright but they should’ve played against Australia, not Peru. The top 6 South American teams all deserve better especially the 5th place and 6th place
But Australia also qualified for the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany their first ever. But they had to go through three matches with South Korea. The first in Sydney ended in a 0-0 draw and then Australia came back from two goals down in the return match at Seoul to force a 2-2 draw which necessitated a replay in Hong Kong.Australia won 1-0 to make it to Munich.
I watch this match and bresciano goal was amazing, i always remember that moment. Always nice to see the underdog kill the giant. Hope indonesia will get there one day
Like I said before, Peru should’ve automatically qualified, FIFA dosent know how hard it is to get even 5th in CONMEBOL with the likes of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and sometimes Ecuador or Colombia. Getting 5th with those teams is not easy at all and it’s already good enough to qualify, even in 6th, Colombia should’ve qualified and 7th, Chile instead should’ve played Australia since they are the same level as them, Australia winning on penalties against Peru is just barely winning, if it was 2-legged, Peru would’ve won, because they are superior and every top 6 South American team is.
As Uruguayan I remember the press talking really bad about Australia, doing jokes at the point that even I felt mad, 4 World Cup titles don’t give any right, Australia was unknown and as an outsider they achieve respect, now, no one jokes about aussies anymore. Of course I wanted Uruguay to win but your jersey and fighting spirit is absolutely respectable and the best won that night, even if Recoba would have scored, somehow we would have lost. I got mad when you got stolen for that “ penalty “ against Italy, otherwise you’d have reach semifinal for sure. Good luck !!!
I dunno about that. Italy were one of the best teams that tournament. We'd have only had a chance to win if we were able to hang on to penalties. While that penalty was probably unfair, it was the result we were probably going to cop anyway, so I don't feel too bitter about it anymore
@@jakesaddo Actually no: Aloisi was primed to come on, and in E/T we would've won as we were running over the top of them and they knew it. Look how Grosso and teammates celebrated getting the penalty...before they even scored!
One day india will also play im fifa wc a big football giant is growing like cricket how india dominate over all big teams same they will do with football hope !!
But now Australia has terrible results for soccer development like China , they never beat Japan 10 years and never beat South Korea 5 years. Their teen soccer team reduced levels every year, even vietnam, Thailand and Laos and other southern east Asian countries can beat them.
