I am a rather frustrated ear learner. However I find myself forgetting and or confusing the first few bars which establish the patterns. I’ve been meaning to learn to read music for several years. Start and then gib up in frustration and confusion. I suspect that Dyslexia has something to do with that. ( I wouldn’t be able to write this without all those maligned algorithms !) This was eye opening for me. You are talking my language, pattern recognition!! Thank you so much!!

I really like your process of teaching! I went to get the sheet music of the melody, and the Session must have 20 versions!
@tiffanyharpandsong
@tiffanyharpandsong 12 дней назад
@ShelleyE yeah sometimes you have to be careful with the Session too, not that the different versions are wrong per se, but sometimes they can be notated incorrectly (key signature not matching the actual notes, e.g.) The best thing to do is listen to other versions and see what matches best! I'm glad you liked the video! This is one of my very first one ages ago - nowadays I'm teaching a new Celtic arrangement every month with accompanying sheet music at www.patreon.com/tiffanyharpandsong if you want to try it out!

I wonder what happened to Neil Gow's FIRST wife?
@tiffanyharpandsong
@tiffanyharpandsong 24 дня назад
@mikesoule1352 I heard someone say the second wife was actually one of his fiddles that was destroyed. 😅 Which makes a good story, but in reality this was truly for a second wife. Story goes when she died he put away his fiddle for a lengthy time, and when he finally played it again this was the tune that came out. His first wife died young sadly!

@MarionTomsett
@MarionTomsett Месяц назад
The naming of intervals throws me off, I think of the number of strings between fingers, or the distance after the route finger…. So for instance for me a second would have two strings in the middle, whereas in music theory that would actually be a fourth. Does anyone else have that problem?
@tiffanyharpandsong
@tiffanyharpandsong Месяц назад
That makes sense! It can be confusing for sure. I think of an interval as the total strings you are encompassing, so the "border" starts at where your fingers are. (I'm sure you know that, but that's how my brain "pictures" it, if that helps!)
@MarionTomsett
@MarionTomsett Месяц назад
@@tiffanyharpandsong thanks, I’ll give it a go, I’m sure it will get better after I’ve visualised for each interval up to an octave properly, thanks again for the tip!

For a slow learner, what book do you recommend I get to just start associating song names with chords?
@tiffanyharpandsong
@tiffanyharpandsong 3 месяца назад
Hi! I think any book that has chords above the melody would be a good place to start. You could check out the Kingston Slow Session book I have linked in the video description above - it's a free download. I would recommend if you know a few tunes that you already enjoy, pick a just couple of those at first and don't worry about memorizing a ton of names. I notice that I always remember the names of tunes better if I take time to learn the melody in my RH. Even if I choose not to play the melody in a session. When I hear a tune I recognize that I back often in sessions, I usually remember what chords I play once I hear it, I just don't always remember the name! And, so many of them have the same or similar chord progression. If you are on FB - you can join my free group Mastering Celtic Music facebook.com/share/1BUh1gEs75KtvRX9/?mibextid=C7JYKg I have several free musical collections linked in there, and some other resources as well. I also really recommend Slowtube now: www.dkthehuman.com/slowtube/ You can put any RU-vid video in there, slow it to a custom speed, and make custom "loops" to learn any tune bit by bit.

Finally a harp instructor that makes it so you can actually learn a piece rather than just rushing through the piece leaving me aghast and discouraged. I have a 40 string Lyon & Healey Chicago harp….it’s lovely. I’d love to make it sing as you do with yours. I only started playing 2 years ago. Since I have developed arthritis I can’t play my classical guitar anymore…but I can still use them for a harp. Thank you for your technique of teaching!!
