This is meant to be a resource for anyone who recognizes the madness of our culture and wants to find a way out of it, a way to a saner way of life with a future. We are explorers learning as we go, trying to revive ancient skills as well as new improvisations. Through sharing our journey- tricks, tips, experiments, and hard-won lessons- we hope to stimulate questions, a sharing of stories, and to do our part to fill a niche in helping the hobos, runaways, disenfranchised drop-outs, rebels, and everyone else who has had enough of this war against our own world. It doesn't have to be this way and we want to PROVE IT. For more, listen to our Podcast, Escaping Society: anchor.fm/gumby-montgomery
I'm familiar with the crane fly orchid, but I'd never heard of Putty root before. I won't mix them up because the putty root is green on both sides. Thanks.
Buddy burners are a great emergency item. They have an indefinite shelf life and are made from free materials. I leave a piece of cardboard sticking up in the middle for easy lighting. When made in a tuna can it will burn for at least two hours.
These are awesome. Acouple of things i do when making mine; 1.)Don't fill it with so much cardboard. Use asmuch wax as possible. Your basically making a giant candle with the wax as your fuel and the cardboard as your wick if you put 1 large closeish fitting sprial of cardboard in the middle that's plenty. 2.)Use the wick from the candles to light it easier. I typically bend the wicks in half so you get 2 strands going into your cardboard. Put them in right after you pour your wax just before it hardens, that'll seal the wick in place. Good down and dirty video! 😁
Ive been living off-grid aswell and need to build something like this currently using a camping dunny , how does it go with flys ? Here in Australia they are thick as and I fear they would be all over this pre quickly here
Wish I could share a photo. A base of a old stump, about 20ft high, was loaded around the east side of the tree. I bet 4 banana boxes full, but they were past season...I went back the next day, and it was picked lol
Like # 9 Still with you here in Canada 🇨🇦 ❤️ 🍻 Let's watch.... At age 21, I made a flushing toilet, between 2 trees, a apparatus built out of roped branches, and a platform you did your job on...on top of cedar bows. You push the lever, and upside down your waste gets covered, with branches, and just toss a layer of soil after. Loved it. Nice comfy seat between 2 contoured by axe logs.
Such a simple system, In my youth my dad would bring back boards from the dump and I got to pull nails and straight them, gallons and gallons of nails, we built a smoke house, small cow barn, goat house and multiple other things with these salvaged boards and nails.
Ya'll are so full of it . but thats why I love you , Ill be building one soon for my cabin , you can attach a funnal to the front of the bucket and run it into a gallon jug for your pee .
Great info! I was going to use sawdust in mine and see if the dried mass was flammable. Compost is a pretty good idea too! I was reading that it's how the Chinese used to fertilize their fields to keep up the nitrogen content.
I like it. smear more mud and sand mix on it, make if finer for the render. If I'm not mistaken render is the same as plaster just used on the exterior, maybe Teresa would research that. Any line stone near by? I tried cooking clam shells once on a brush fire to make a rude lime putty, but it wasn't as successful as I had expected, a line wash could help with longevity of the material. Not sure how to salvage for that other than making it from fired limestone, cool science project though. Not sure maybe some kind of oil coating on the mud, again research.
Love the design , cant wait to try to make one , if im lucky maybe ya'll can supervise the construction,. Keep the good information coming , we appreciate it .
If its tooo small you could trim the poles to lower the structure. Lavvu but they weren't ummm white. Sami if that is the acceptable name. Great model. Great incentive. I wonder how many will get out and make a teepee now?
Pretty nice! 30 degrees is chilly, its just been getting into the 20 here on the maine coast at night 30 to 40 days. we had a feels like 7 degree day the other day due to wind. The chilly days of late fall are different than the chilly days of spring. I'm already looking forward to spring but gotta deal with the dead zone first. I have a bandsaw mill and have for a long time been wanting to build a lavvu style hut which I presume is base on the Sami version of the teepee, it think its cool how the northern circle of culture have similar design in structure. Maybe its the 100th monkey syndrome or they moved about the upper reaches of the world leaving about the same technology. Any way my hopeful version will be tapered 2" thick planks. If you ever come across some used up EPDM rubber that stuff is great to repurpose. Its not see through, though, light in a structure is important. Have you thought about incorporating a structure partially in the ground and using clear plastic on the south facing aspect for light and heat Bank the back section, maybe in some hill. My mind races with these thing. I am a builder by trade, in the timber frame world. I may put some epdm salvaged form a job on the lavvu and bank it with dirt, sod, moss, blueberry sod too. speaking of bbs if you pm me an address i can make that happen. Tim.
These are awesome BUT whenever you make them strip your cardboard up into strips then roll the first one then roll the second one onto that snd the third then place into the can
You can use cat food tins as well to make smaller burners to easier carrying. I use the Iams cat food ones because they have a safety lip, no sharp edges and an upper lip so it kinda funnels the flame into a tighter area for faster cooking. Also a bit of foil to cover your cooking pot would be sweet. decreases the time it takes for something to boil up.
if you make only a small cut at the outer edge of a leaf ,the plant will exude a dose of sap then self heal- that way the plant loses no leaves to you, and you have a constant supply of remedy for your blemishes.
whats up ya'll , going through all your video's ,and so far I'm impressed, keep them coming, Im subscribing and ill check out that pod cast . Thanks for the hospitality the other day . mid life Mike.
