Great video! Really fun to see how different the workflow of a press photographer can be compared to the way I shoot festivals when I get hired by them. Really insightful, thanks for sharing
@@pressphotographerfocus5361 Yes, give it a go mate. I managed to get a job as a press photographer about 3 months back for a major New Zealand media group. I actually got the job by accident, right time, right place. I don't even have qualification, but my previous photo work got me the job. I also do video work with my 1dx MkIII which is part of my issued kit. One minute I'm shooting something mundane like leaking water pipes in the street, next minute, I'm in Parliament helping set up live streaming for a prime minister speech. The job is a bit different to what I expected, but in a good way, because I get to choose how I want to shoot and edit. What I find interesting is, when I'm at a breaking news event, all the other media workers, all help each other. No where near the rivalry I expected. It is also quite interesting hearing about news unreleased to the public for various reason. I have had six front page pics so far. I never would have guessed I would be doing this for a job.
Heading down to Ukraine tomorrow (I'm half Polish living in Sweden) , this was relieving to see since I tend to overpack and bring way too much gear. Always find myself using the main camera body and one lens. 28-74 tamron (less weight). I'll bring my Zeiss 16-35 f4, Tamron 28-74 f2.8, Sony 70-200 f2.8 and Sigma F1.8mm. 2 Sony R4 bodies. + accessories. I hope I'll be back here to give an update.
Was it difficult considering leaving behind still photography and photojournalism and move onto broadcasting.. ive been following your videos for long and yes being a press photographer myself i understand it’s nearly impossible to do weekly vlogging.. coming to the question.. do you miss print? Photojournalism?
I've only just found the channel. Hello from Torbay ;-) I love event photography so seeing your video at Glastonbury was great. I get caught up in not being able to be everywhere. Something I need to reign in ;-)
Glad to see you back. I'm a contributor to your old gang at SWNS. During 2019 I did a lot of coverage of the demise at Bury FC, and found it interesting to see the crossover between the two disciplines,as there were a lot of TV crews covering as well-in fact my exclusive was lit by the lights from the ITN crew who stayed after everyone else had cleared off. Some info on behind the scenes, and sat vans would be great.
Reminds me of my last set up over 10 years ago, though as I was old school and would have never considered using a backpack for hauling gear. I still have all of my Domke shoulder bags going back to the 80s as well as a Banana Republic Photojournalists Vest. Shot for various outfits from '82 to 08' and went through several kits from F1s to 1DXs over those 26 years until laid off in '08'. Frankly, I do not miss it much, well I do miss the steady paycheck but not the politics, both work and personal. Now doing corporate reports, shooting local and regional publications, mainly travel as well as stock. Went mirrorless (Fuji) two years back, no plans on returning to DSLRs. Thanks for sharing.
A BIG thank you for a superb vlog in so many ways; amazing that you found time to make it. Some of the photos of artists dont look like you are below them...did you use the gopro to get those shots. Also which publications use your photos?
Hi Dave, I am a filmmaker and photographer and I want to transition into more documentary/photojournalism style,,, i currently have a ricoh GR for photo and sony a6300 with manual lenses for video. What gear do you suggest I look for ? thank you very much1
As a news photographer myself I found this very interesting. Question - the thing you used to send your pics from the camera, do you know if that’s available in Nikon? Also the wi-fi thing, my biggest issue out on jobs, what is it? Looking forward to seeing more great content.
lovely shots! How are you retaining focus, especially in the shallow depth of field shots as doesn't HFR mode lock out focus..? Can you set the focus at certain distance before shooting? thank you
