If the lidar data has it, you can use the classifications to help place vegetation and other surface features. Another source is vegetation classification vector sources, which you can import as splines (export from QGIS as a SHP - it’s easy to make an importer in python)

Thank you! I'm replying in English for the sake of the rest of the audience. The question was if I make more complex procedural hard-surface models in Houdini. The answer is - yes, I do. I model almost entirely in Houdini now. For instance, everything in my Christmas in New England scene, or almost everything (except the flying garden hull) in Neo Tokyo scene. And stuff for work as well.

@ION_RU
@ION_RU 2 месяца назад
@tinyredkite
@tinyredkite 2 месяца назад
Matrix Awakens (The Matrix Awakens: Generating a World | Tech Talk | State of Unreal 2022).

In the talk "Nanite for Artists" by Epic, they mentioned that a static mesh like that shouldn't have LODs because a single nanite model that doubles the polycount takes up less space than the combined size of the LODs.
@tinyredkite
@tinyredkite 2 месяца назад
Absolutely agree. Don't create LODs, if you plan to utilize nanite. But I still wanted to show the process of creating standard mesh with LODs, because in some cases it's needed, even for very high poly meshes, like with path tracing, which doesn't support nanite.
@thephobos1810
@thephobos1810 2 месяца назад
@@tinyredkite To add to that, if someone was developing these things for a game they might want to keep in mind that not every platform supports Nanite, and for the platforms that do not every person has it turned on. LODs and baking normals are still something that would need to be considered in that case.
@tinyredkite
@tinyredkite 2 месяца назад
@@thephobos1810 That's right. If I was making this a game asset, I would bake normals of my high poly mesh to the lower poly cylinder for the LOD0 and simplify cylinder for at least two more LOD levels.

@tinyredkite 4 месяца назад
Thank you for the comment! If you look at 16:12 (where I show the setup for grass layer), you'll see that each parameter has "Grass" in the name, and also in the bottom left in the layers details you'll see a dropdown with group named "Grass". I didn't emphasize that in the tutorial, but this is how you group the parameters. Simply click on the dropdown and type the name. Then select all the other parameters that should go into same group and select the one you've created from the list. I hope this helped! If not, please let me know, and we'll try to get if fixed for you.

@TolisPiperas82
@TolisPiperas82 5 месяцев назад
Can we add new layer in this material?
@tinyredkite
@tinyredkite 5 месяцев назад
Yes, of course. You can do it the same way I add the current layers to the material in the video. Select layer blend node (the one where all the existing layers are going to), and press plus on the left. You'd prodably want to make it height blend. As the the actual new layer, I guess, the fastest way is to just copy existing one (e.g. grass for standard and gravel for world aligned), replace the textures, rename the parameters and then add it to the blend. Please mind that after that you'll need to go to the landscape mode in the editor, add a new layer asset (weight blend), and paint on the landscape manually or load a weight blend map. You might want to reference the video, I explain all these steps in the beginning. Please also note that sometimes the landscape mode is stubborn and doesn't show changes right away. In this case try to reopen the editor, or reassing the material on the landscape in the editor and so on. By your question I assume that you didn't have much experience with landscape materials before. You might still want to watch the part of the video where I assign material to the landscape and do all the manipulations there. In any case, I hope it works out for you. The last thing: I will not have internet connection at all for a week, starting tonight, so I will not be able to answer the questions. But everything is in the video.

Thank you so much! As to the technical stuff, I will give you my opinion (which you didn't as for :)). You can do many things with many different tools. You can make textures in Paint, but Substance Painter is still much better tool for the job. You can drive the nail into the wall with many objects, but hammer is just better. UE5 is an awesome tool for so many things, but I don't feel that modeling in it is the best option you have. And it looks like the PCG is the best for placing things, but is it good for modeling? I'm not so sure. The tutorial is very easy, I'm pretty sure you can follow it even if you open Houdini for the first time. Again, all this is just my opinion.
