The Wavertree Society, founded in 1977, aims to improve local amenities, protect the environment and conserve the architectural heritage of the Wavertree district of Liverpool; especially within the Wavertree Village and Wavertree Garden Suburb Conservation Areas. It is a Registered Charity - No.1004259 - and is the recognised local Civic Society (a member of Civic Voice). The Society welcomes to membership all those who support its aims, whether they live in, work in or simply have an interest in Wavertree - Past, Present and Future.

I would love a copy of the photograph of Olive Mount Hospital, the photo with the Hospital buildings behind the Mansion House. I worked there from 1989 till it closed in 1991. In the photo is two of the buildings that I worked in Elder House immediately behind to the right of the Mansion House (Hospital Administration/Dr's/Kitchen/Staff Dining Room) and Activity Unit in the far right of the photo. The Hospital was a residential hospital for adults with learning disabilities when I worked there and had been for many years. It's original use was Cottage Homes for Poor Children and later became a Childrens Hospital, then finally for Adults with Disabilities.
That was very interesting. I lived in Wavertree as a child until we moved across the Mersey. But my Grandparents were still there and we visited every Saturday. I'd go back for an occasional week during the summer too. And the trees were magnificent until the they all died during that unfortunate time. That's what made the neighbourhoods so special for me. The tunnels under the arching trees on some of the streets. I loved it. And all the houses were surrunded by shrubs and hedges and little wooden fences. What a wonderful place for children it was. Fresh air in abundance. My Grandfather instructed me to "listen" one morning and we heard a cuckoo nearby. And then I was moved thousands and thousands of miles away and I longed for Wavertree for years. By the time I went back for a visit my Grandparents were gone as were all the trees and shrubs and little gardens and wooden fences. I saw Picton Clock every week as we transfered to get onto the tram for the ride up to my Granny's street. For the birth of one of my brothers, my Mother went back to Wavertree and he was born at "home" as was the case in those days. "Memory Lane." Good name for a Wavertree street.
The 2 semi-detached Mill Cottages. I walked past them on my way to school in the early 1960's. The one on the left was burned out. Some kids said it was bombed. From my memory the structure was sound which would suggest a fire and not a bomb. On the 2 houses occupying the old mill site. I visited the area in Jan/Feb1980 and they were both well established homes. This suggests a build date in the late 1970's.

That was so informative and interesting, the slave trade is a very complex part of history, and not black and white (sincerely no pun intended) I think this kind of education is needed but I agree with the opinion that erasing history is not the answer, to forget is to repeat as they say.. I came here because one of my ancestors is William Roscoe (according to anecdotal word of mouth from my grandmother, no idea how true this is) I'm sad to say he wasn't the hero I was lead to believe he was! But I thoroughly enjoyed this talk and learned a lot from it that generally sn't covered elsewhere. Many thanks x

thank you for that fascinating video, i grew up in wavertree, and was told that the gate's where put on the bind school after a child ran out into the road and was killed, i am 70now and live in widnes but my heart allway's belong's to my be-loved wavertree xx
i grew up in waterloo street, they where magic days for me, i loved the history of wavertree, the monkswell was said to have a entrance or some way to get to childwall abbey.
Hello, I worked at Olive Mount Hospital just before it's closure in February 1991. I would love to see any Photographs of The Hospital and in particular any Films or Videos that may have been made at sometime in it's History. I absolutely loved working there. I worked on The Activities Unit and The Oakes and W.H. Barton Wards but mainly and spent most of my time working there on Elder House. Happy memories .......
Some great excerpts here, and worth a look, do visit Wavertree, if your down Liverpool way, you won't be disappointed. My Gran moved in with her family to a house near the now Wavertree Gardens. Some great little nooks and crannies and Houses still surviving thanks to this wonderful Charitable Society.
