Hi I'm Jim Thornton from Creative Impressions and Wheeling History. We are in the process of revamping our RU-vid channel and want to bring you our history videos and our new Wheeling History Stories that show how Wheeling is one of the most interesting small towns in the country. The history of Wheeling has always been a passion of mine and over the years we have published ten books and several posters about the history of Wheeling. We have had several wonderful collaborations with friends to make this possible. We are so happy to bring you these videos and stories so that you can view them for free and share with your friends and family. Sit back and enjoy.
Please visit our website at www.wheelinghistory.net or you can go to the banner at the top of our page and click on the wheeling history on right bottom and it will take you to our website. Our books and posters are in several places in wheeling. For inquiries phone 304 281 9470 or email cre8m@comcast.net
Thank You.

The hotel was built in 1903 on what is now Edgewood Street in Woodsdale. The former owner of the land was aware of the many springs on the property and had sold the waters that he bottled himself. At that time, going to “take the waters” was a very sociable thing for society to do and many resorts had grown up around mineral springs. When completed in 1907, the hotel was a block long and three stories high with 84 rooms, a spacious lobby, two dining rooms, several sweeping verandas, three sun parlors, a tennis court, pool, and a billiard parlor. Modern conveniences included a telephone in each room and a power plant for electricity generation on the site. In the early hours of the morning on January 13th, 1918, a spark from a gasoline engine in the ice department set waste nearby on fire and spread to ammonia tanks causing them to explode. The fire quickly spread to a nearby linen storage room and was soon out of control. The building was underinsured and was a total loss. It was never re-built because of increased building costs. The total loss in property, furnishings, and personal property of the guests was estimated at $150,000. There were 125 guests at the time of the fire.

also of note, it was freezing outside and as many of the guests seek refuge, they were welcomed by the Nuns of the Carmelite monastery. Shortly after they formed here. But they have a far darker story to be told than the fate of the Stratford "Spring" Hotel.

Family owned and we all lived as the "Last house on the RIGHT "AT the 17th bridge and the Creek" from 1930(?) until the mid 60's. Under the name of Aquaro (Grandma) and or Zancanella (Grandpa). The house was "Old" back in 1950! Dirt basment floor, coal hot steam heat. The Brewery was already only a memory even back then (as I recall)! Still there today and lived in! My sister and I were born there (actually at Wheeling Hospital) in 47 & 49! The Creek frightened me as a small kid since our back yard was Part of the Wheeling Creek bank and had no fence at the time and the Creek would often run fast and muddy ! The "Elks" Playground on 16th St. and St. Josheph's Cathedral and Gradeschool and Clay School.

I think it was called Fabulous Fanny's and I remember it was so small you had to sign a book to get in if it was full and one time they called a name, and nobody answered so I said that's me, but I wasn't and I got in lol. There was also a bar across the street called The Fox Trap, so it was back and forth.

Above the YMCA building you can see the steeple of St Alphonsus church. I believe it was replaced to the one we know today in 1925. But the Market street bridge as shown was not constructed until after the 1907 flood. Will have to research this a bit more.

In the Map of Ohio County, West Virginia, 1918 (Farmline Map) available on the Ohio County Library website, there is a plot labeled "JC [or JG] Moore just north of Glenn's Run on the western side of what is now Route 2. This would be near the current Assaros garage (but possibly across the street and a little north if this map is correct) as stated by @HackHunter1835 in the previous comment. I do not see anything listed about a school, but it may provide the best idea of where this photo was taken.

if i had a camera back then,i could of had great pictures,,i use to walk that from town every day,up to 7th st main,to thumb home.,,to Warwood....i can remember the face of the tunnels showing for the first time,it did not take them to long to drill through that mountain..but back then,it felt like forever..it was so hard to believe the took that street out,,it was the gateway from wheeling to whg Hill..I-70 was not in yet..coming from the North to Wheeling,,8th street from main was the hot spot to whg hill.,and that street was steep..just thinking, about what route the big trucks took,,i just cant remember,,there wasnt a lot of them till later on..but a lot of 18 wheelers went through Warwood,as i remember and Buses..im not sure if they opened 2 way traffic from 7th in main to 10th street or not,,i was not driving yet.im not sure if you were allowed to walk up pass the opening,,but i did..haa,,great picture James

Attended Madison from 1968 to 1975. This building was called the Red Building (the other was the White Building) and I'm pretty sure it was knocked down in the late 70s. My second grade classroom (one wall out of it anyway) is still visible to the left of the entrance on the 1st floor. Only the first floor was used in my time there.

I remember it well, it was a department store similar to LS Good's . I believe there was an entrance from the Chaplin St. side also. There was Dr. Vanyo's dentist office one story up on the corner off Chaplin. If you had a good checkup he would give you a prescription for a free milk shake at Walgreens.

First let me say I really enjoy your site and the history of Wheeling you are sharing. That train is long not because it came from Blaw Knox/ Wheeling Mold and Foundry but because it is a circus train that happens to be using the trackage of the Wheeling Terminal Railway to head to Ohio or to use the connection on the other leg of the wye to go to Pittsburgh on the B&O. I believe that is a JJ Young photo and it is in the book assembled after his death by others. The book has some great photos and every so often a picture will be captioned with the wrong direction on the train easy to do if you did not grow up in the area and have a fascination with trains.
