“Watch a video on this” I almost closed the app to go look for RU-vid 😂 jokes aside, this was great man! T3 precision screwdriver (hex key lookin tip) + separation bar/pick ftw. I repaired a PS5 controller earlier this week, and was referred to someone who this controller. Never touched one before, so this was a great video to watch! I would get some 99% isopropyl alcohol prior to disassembly and clean it up a bit to remove any dust, dirt, and oil particles that are on the surface close to the meeting points and the meeting points themselves. This will move some of the internal contamination and will help the disassembly itself - without contamination in the way of the snap points, parts are less likely to break - think of it like a lubricant of sort, and reassurance that you can use more strength 😂

Hi James I've been coming to your videos as I have the same exact laptop model. I wanted to open up the heat sink and apply honeywell to my gpu/cpu and change the pads, but I had some concerns about the VRAM. Do you happen to have any updates after you had done maintenance after this video (how long it lasted, effectiveness, average temps) and if you would have done anything differently? Do you happen to know the thickness required for the stock pads you did not remove?
@JamesHeigh

Thanks for checking them out. I quickly found I am missing equipment to get good data on those points. But much like my channel the practical application was a total success. The temps I did see were within 5% of OEM specs and this computer was in heavy use until late 2023. It was only replaced to go with a tower. That laptop is still running and the fans are about ready for another swap. I should do a basic update video about it. I will try to get something out soon!

Just a note for anyone else having this issue; you can disassemble the fan box, and when you do, you will see that the fan rotor is not really connected to its motor - it just sits on a spindle and is kept in place by the motor's magnetism. If you lift the rotor up, clean out the dust on the vanes and add some light grease or sewing machine oil to the spindle it might work without needing a replacement. Also, be VERY careful with the rotor fan vanes - they are fragile and if you bend the metal it is impossible to bend them back such that they remain balanced and you therefore get a noisy fan rattle at speed. Oh, and not so much oil that it leaks out, as then it becomes a dust magnet - just a dab. Edit: found a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q5X1wWpN-QI.html But don't forget to disconnect the battery before you disconnect anything from the motherboard; some fans run for a while after the CPU turns off, so their power port may be powered even when the laptop is off, which in turn means you can blow the circuit just by manually reconnecting it unless you remove the battery connection first!

@JamesHeigh 9 месяцев назад
@@4x-square222 I had a similar experience, the max was nerfed but it still cooled fine. Its been a couple years now and that computer will only have issues during the summer no ac gaming. Otherwise its still fine. And the condition of overheating is basically thermal throttling so you will not get full performance but the equipment is still protected for the most part. Some people are really scared about how it affects the longevity of the chip and board but most of the time you will replace for other reasons before having an actual failure. This is a risk but for me and for the cost it was worth it. So you just have to decide if that risk is valid for you. Another thought, this is a great way to get by then replace with the OEM later on if you are still worried about it.

Please help, I need a very quick answer. I will order 2 new fans for my Acer Predator Helios 300. Not sure if I should go for original (and more expensive) fans or MADE IN CHINA fans (the one I see you use in this video). So what I would please like to know: How did the fan you put in this video behave in games or whenever there was the need for max fan speed? Do you think this is better/worse in any notable way? Please, your answer to all these would be very very valuable right now, as I need to make a final decision EDIT: And one more thing: did you had any problem with controlling the fans from Predator Sense software after installing the new fan? Is any configuration needeed to be done, or is it just install fan and run it up

The cheaper fans worked fine in every way. The system scaled them and set them max when needed to the fans specs without any config. The performance is about 85% of the original fans so thermals are slightly higher. But that was worth it for the savings plus the original fans die so fast. Hope this helps!

Hello! I am in very much need of help, so if you could offer me some advice I would be very grateful. Firstly, I have to appologise for the long message and hope that you will respond to it, as I feel I pretty much reached a dead end with my research regarding this problem: My Acer Predator Helios 300 PH317-52 GPU fan started around a few months ago to make make a scratching sound and vibration with it. Scratching sound and vibration becomes more unnoticeable when fans run full speed, but after a while after turning them off these problems come back. I also have to mention that overheating is not a problem so far, temperatures seem to be as if the fans work normal, it's just these indicators of scratchy noise and vibration that could indicate a hardware failure or who knows what 3 months ago, I went with the laptop on a service. They cleaned the fans, repasted, and oiled them, but all they were able to tell me is that, even if GPU fan is problematic, both fans should be replaced as soon as possible. The day I went on service was April 30th, and everything was smooth again, no sound whatsoever, no vibration, until around June 11th, when these problems once again came back. Lately I was looking for replacement fans, and the best I could find are some fans that I'm not sure if they are original or not, and they specify they are for PH317-52 (my laptop model), but some websites specify it's for GTX 1060 models (my GPU is RTX 2060) Now my questions would be: 1: Should I replace the fans or would it be any chance of still repairing them (I was thinking if maybe the guys from the service were a bit harsh) 2: If I am to replace the fans, is it really necesarilly to replace both of them as told on the service, even if CPU fan seems to work (and sound) just fine 3: If I am to replace fans, would the up mentioned type of fans be good for my specific laptop? Also, if helpfull in any way, sometimes integrated microphone doesn't work or works badly until I filp the laptop on its back and bring it back to normal position then, witch makes me suspect that the microphone problem could also be linked to the fan problem somehow.
@JamesHeigh
@JamesHeigh Год назад
Thanks for the comment! 1-When the fans wear out like this there is no viable service for the fans and they just need replaced. It’s a common issue with most fans to this day. 2-You can just replace the one fan at a time the only downside is when it happens later you will need to open it up again and the stock fans really only last a year on average. 3-I bet those fans will work just fine also cooling from 1060 to 2060 isn’t as big a deal as cooling the cpu so it should be fine there as well.
