Welcome to my new channel, the spiritual successor of the HDFerryChannel which I had a couple of years ago. For my channel I will primarily focus on making videos about ferries in western Europe. There will also be videos about ferry crossings during stormy weather, something I really enjoy. However, the amount of these videos will depend on how many storms we get and if I can travel or not. I hope you enjoy my content. Please feel free to leave a (constructive) comment on how I have can further improve my videos etc.

The gear I use is a FujiFilm XT-2, with a varied set of lenses. I am thinking about using an action camera in addition to my XT-2, especially for outside shots during those stormy crossings.

Sorry, watched about 3min of your video and couldn't bare that infernal music throughout the video. Wind howling and water splashing against rhe glass would have added to the spectacle. Not sure why people insist on playing repetitive music over the top of videos. It's horrible.

At 39k tonnes a big enough ship to handle the sea. That said she was built in 1987 so probably not as good as some of the more modern ferries..mind you i did that crossing in a force 12 on the old Irish Continental Lines' St Killian in about 1979. Think she was about 8k tonnes..talk about a cork in a storm!!!

Why would they head out in the first place, knowing the weather conditions and forecast and that there are ships already waiting in Dover?

Oooof. I think I had waves of abot 3-4 metres and 6 to 7 Beaufort on Normandie last summer, and it didn't seem so violent (but at night I couldn't see much).

The Normandie is a great ferry, it will be a sad day when she leaves the fleet. Wind can do a lot to whip up the waves, I noticed it on this trip as well. As soon as the wind dropped most of the breaking waves went away and those always give the biggest splashes 😅

I can say it takes a certain kind of passion (and level of craziness 🤣) to make this kind of videos. Just driving to and from Cherbourg takes about 12 hours, never mind staying out on deck for hours being drenched by sea spray and rain 😂. Every video is a process but you learn from it what you can and take it with you for the next project (GoPro Media kits don't like sea spray for instance 🤣). It can be somewhat disappointing sometimes not to get more views but reading a comment like yours made my day and I want thank you for that 🙂.

It was a rough crossing from Portsmouth to Caen. Did any of the passengers suffer from sea sickness?

As long as she goes into the waves it's not that bad. It also depends on where you are on the ship as the bow is obviously pitching more. But the movement did increase a lot once she turned north and the seas were coming from the side. She was rolling quite a bit and we weren't allowed outside for a while

I was reading into P&o ferries now. And it seems that with the recent changes they really are ruining a great company and service? Firing so many people so they can pay minimal wages to foreign workers? Thinking the services go worse and worse when people are underpaid.

Agree with a comment below that the rough patch is always about a quarter way of the journey through when leaving Dover. I used to do my weekly shopping in calais when I lived in Kent and I've been on some seriously rough journeys. Worst one i remember was around February time in the year 1998. The channel was choppy due to a storm and the captain had accelerated out of Dover too fast. The ship rocked side to side and kept the momentum for three quarters of the voyage. Tables were flying all over the place, coffee cups smashed, punters losing thier sea legs and falling over. The duty free shop was closed off in fear of the booze bottles hitting people whilst falling off the shelves. Really miss taking the journey regular. But now the booze warehouses such as eastenders have closed down, its not worth me going as regular anymore.

30 hours stuck on a Ferry in a storm?...Ugh, non merci!.. Years ago, when ferries were much smaller, the risks of not being allowed in to Harbour were less, I think...We had a really rough crossing {Force 8} on a tiny old Ferry called 'Falaise'..The decks were closed, and passengers were gathered round an open window on one side of the ferry for some much needed fresh air.

As someone who has travelled to and from Dover on the DFDS ferries for 7 years I can say that it's really nice and pretty affordable. Alot of fun activities to do inside + the food is really good. Isnt it calming just sitting on the benches and staring outside into the sea, always felt really relaxing!

Those who know what I mean but I was sailing the right way as storm behind not in front. Just waiting to load the car was been buffeted. Docked safely though but other ferry sailing other way was sailing into the waves. I've had a few force 9s but the gusting 11 was the worse x

Millpond. Our October 6 2020 crossing from Bilbao was just the same until we left Bilbao harbour. The ship was very late departing as the weather had been so bad on the way down to Spain. Within 40 minutes we understood. We were in lying down in bed, trying not to be sick. She failed, despite pills swallowed. I took pills later, but held it all in. We had splurged on an expensive commodore (?) cabin at the front: luxury. Waves repeatedly hit our windows directly from the bow as it went under, for more than 12 hours. The ceiling groaned for around 8 hours. We stayed there for 18 hours in bed, trying not to be ill. The next morning, the whole ship was in shock: PTSD It began to be ok halfway across the channel to Portsmouth. So, we could finally go and see how our poor dogs had faired in the pet kennels. They seemed alright.
