While the landing that serves the float is difficult to find once you are out there it's fantastic while you can only use one rod at a time when you are on the float itself, it's best to take three, a light for panfish, a medium for walleyes, and a heavy for cats and sturgeon, they have food, and decent restrooms and some tackle, but they don't have bait so get that in LaCrosse, it's a great place to fish and relax, eagles river boats and barge traffic, and some huge lake surgeon ( protected catch and release except during the fall season when you have to have a tag, the legal length varies from year to year so it's best to check the regs) shovel nose sturgeon, walleyes, white bass, huge perch, blue, flathead, and channel cats, sauger, and more, if it's in this part of the river, it's here, plenty of lodging in town at varying price ranges, from mom and pop motels to the national chains, this place is head and shoulders above the place in Genoa downriver, ( which I won't even name it's so disgusting) the boat from the landing runs once an hour, except for noon when the boat driver takes his lunch, go and you won't regret it, it's a great trip! ( and don't worry about a net, there's one provided for every picnic table!)
Gotta love the Mississippi barges and nice video! I fished Clements a mess of times south of Best Dam Float, have a Perch video on my page here from a couple years back at Clements. Also fished Hubbards Float south of Clements. Haven’t tried Best Dam Float yet but it’s on my list of future destinations. By the way that fish you caught and called a Guppy is a (Log Perch) , a small and rare species in the Perch / Walleye family. The Mississippi has like over 200 species of fish so you never know what you’ll hook next. By the way I subscribed under my fishing page here, and my personal RU-vid account as well! Keep up the good work! 🎣
@@zachswildlife22 thanks so much, I appreciate the support! Hubbards is in Harpers Ferry IA. I haven’t been there in many years, but we always got a lot of walleyes whenever we went.
Great job. I'm curious how they will hold up. Do you know if the paint has a flex additive? My concern would be the paint cracking due to hardening without a flex additive. Let us know how the season goes. Good luck this season.
I’m not sure about the flex, but we did already take it out once covered it in dirt and then had to scrub them clean again with no issues so that’s a little promising. We will continue to abuse them this summer and I’ll let you guys know.
My go to is cj’s catfish punch bait, it’s like $25 for a gallon bucket which’ll last you a good while, won’t bring in the trophy size, but hauls in eating size channels like no other
@@zachswildlife22 it’s got natural fibers in it, so all you need is regular treble hooks, no spong, or cage or anything. Stays on really well even on hard casts
One of the best things you can ever do as an outdoorsman, is get familiar with the species of animals in your ecosystem. General rule of thumbs is to stay away from potential danger. If you can determine a water snake from a copperhead, you have effectively eliminated the danger. Further north, theres only 2 snakes i have to worry about- Timber Rattlesnakes and Copperheads. Most venomous species of snakes have different shaped heads, like you can almost tell they have a set of fangs meant to inject venom. Most Non-venomous snakes have heads that are streamline with their body. Copperheads are more flat in the middle, they swim on top of the water. More narrow towards the back, juveniles have a yellow-greenish tip on their tail which they use as bait. hour glass bands wrap around their width. Wide on the sides- Base color is solid, the bands have an ombré effect .
I love this and I appreciate the great info! Sadly It is a totally irrational fear. We have some rattle snakes this far north but not many. They’re the only snake we really need to look out for. But I’d be lying if I said a Garter snake wouldn’t also make me jump out of my skin.
Log Perch! I commented down below 👇, but definitely a Log Perch. Very cool you caught a Brown Trout , the “Driftless region” out there is loaded with hundreds of trout streams , many that flow right into the Mississippi. So every once in awhile a Trout gets caught in the main river, but not very common at all.
@@zachswildlife22 the only stream I know of is called Black Earth creek, but there’s a list of trout streams as well as public access maps on the DNR website. I need to explore more of them myself!
@@zachswildlife22ok. That was driving me nuts thinking about it. I need to make a trip out there from Ohio and experience it myself. Do you think the parking lot is safe to leave your vehicle there all day
You punch the hook into the bait and pull out an angle. It should collect just fine, and don't worry if some flings off when you cast it will just chum up the water.
Great video and some very nice catches! Sorry about the camera issue. Would have been nice to see a few of those. But hey, sometimes stuff like that happens. Keep up the good work my friend!
