Thanks! I actually got the machining done at my university and made the toolpaths myself (though I went over the code with people much more experienced in CNC before actually cutting the parts). Because of this, they didn't charge me for the machining as long as a mill was available and I provided my own material. I agree with you though, machining services can get real expensive real fast.
Great event recap! Great to see Jumbo continuing to improve. Hopefully when I make it back to the west coast we get a rematch. Also just a heads up the builder of Volt Shot uses they/them pronouns!
I first saw Jumbo through the eyes of ICU, which looked like a found-footage horror movie! Anyways, great video, congratulations on an impressive run, and I’m looking forward to future Jumbo fights!
You should use banebots t40 aluminum hubs! I find them super easy to work with and they use a set screw like the ones you have. Used them on my plant and they held up to direct hits. They're fairly lightweight as well
Builder of Barney here, the lifting of my weapon was not quite intentional, but it worked out. I had to take off the magnets after our previous fight because they were too strong.
Very cool bot! The bot gliding everywhere is probably due to the weapon getting slightly unbalanced and violently shaking the bot, either from bending so the center of mass isn't aligned on the axle anymore or just losing material on the tooth/counterweight. You can try and get a drone prop balancer (or similar function, basically a perfectly level axle in some bearings so the weapon automatically rotates the heaviest part to the bottom due to gravity) to re-balance the weapon by making tiny cuts/shave off bits so it vibrates less.
I've been having a hard time gluing the shell on Tombstone's weapon shaft and keeping it on while hitting something. The shell either pops off or the super glue jammed the weapon shaft. How did you get yours to stick on very well and spin up properly?
DO NOT OVERDO THE LOCKTITE. IT WILL GET STUCK AND YOU WILL HAVE TO USE A TORCH. Ask me how I know. Once you locktite them they should be fine from then on. The locking from the junk left in the threads has worked for me now for like 4 comps. I had more problems with the weapon on my beetle shaking the motor mounting screws loose and I always have to remember to get those fully locked too. No matter how balanced you think everything is one hit and everything will shake loose. It happens but it sucks to lose from that
Do you still have the AI packs, teams, arenas, components and robots for: Ironbot Jr., Plan B, RA2 Heavy Metal, and Megaman-RA2 Edition. And do you still have the components folder for all of the revolution 1-3 so I can get the robots to work?.
The other thing I’ve learned it both karting and robots is that competing is no fun when you have nobody to compete with. Everyone will always help you put your bot in the cage or your kart on track. They won’t tell you all their secrets or ideas but they will absolutely help you rebuild your bot or give you advice on how to approve it
Stingray is quickly becoming a favourite antweight of mine - very excited to see you continue to optimize the build, and im excited to see even more bot designs from you!
I don't understand these... they ar e always advertised as the something of the biggest baddest killer robots...but to me, these appear so dumb...and a person comments actually.."it just drags and flails its weapon"- are there serious design limitations? IDK....meh....
This explains what that strange tail print was for... Loctite is definitely a lesson to learn. But at least it didn't cause anything terrible to happen
Awww this is great to find I'm Mt Dew Camacho's Dad his radio was good he's just 6 years old with little hands😅😂 he had so much fun, your bot was super cool excited to see you get the bugs out
If I ever overhaul the design of Stingray, I'll definitely consider brushless drive. Still have too many spares for the current design that need to get smashed up before that happens though 😁
👋 I wasn't at this event but I am part of Team Idiocracy with Mt. Dew Camacho and Frito Pandejo - was fun to stumble across this video in the wild! (I'm not sure if he was having radio issues - he's still getting the hang of driving)
