I own 4 guinea pigs (Barbock, Shinobi, Ares, Nimbus) and 1 african pygmy hedgehog (Teazel). I am not a trained vet so these care tips are based on my personal experiences with my pets and research that I have done.
A lot of helpful info.. and I can tell it was made with great care for your hedgie. ❤ I would suggest updating the title to How to Care For Your Cold Hedgehog, as African Pygmys technically do not hibernate, but are susceptible to getting too cold, and when they do, they get very wobbly, as their circulation slows down considerably (in a way that can appear similar to their European cousins' behavior during hibernation). African pygmy hedgehogs experience a condition known as Torpor, specifically when they are cold. Look into it for more info as it's a common issue for them. 🥰
I know a lot of people out here are saying "I don't own a hedgehog" MY GUY is not about YOU owning a hedgehog it's about YOU rarely out of nowhere finding one in the middle of the street and you want to steal it and own it or just move it out of the way and not leave it in the middle of the road that's why I searched for this video because I found one yesterday and if that hedgehog is here even today I wanna move it to where is grass cause it will be safer there, and i learned how now.
I picked up a wild hedgehog using several layers of socks. It seemed to have more spines near the bottom. In the defensive mode I couldn't see its soft side. And it was black. And angry like cussing at me. They seem to run away about 1/3rd of the time. But their speed is not great. There are hhogs in my city. I thought they needed a healthy fairytale forest to live.
Growing up in the outskirts of Vienna Austria there where a fair number of hedgehogs around sometimes I would see a family of them other times individuals the would cut through auer gardens To wherever they where going. I sometimes would catch one and bring it in the house would crack a egg into a bowl it was never more then 15 minutes before the unrolled themselves relaxed and ate the raw egg. After a wile I put them back outside I never met a mean one that would bite, the where all strangely tame.
This was really useful as a hedgehog owner,i got it yesterday and i was a little scared to pick it up because of its spikes so I thought it would hurt me,but when i saw this on how to hold it with gloves or towels.i use a blanket a small baby blanket and i sleep with it so it can have my sent and my hedgehog can get used to it and adapt!
I love them. But as any other animal which isn't domensticated I prefer to watch them in the wild and support them there with leaf hills or dry places for the winter. :)
