Hi!!! I have a hedgehog and i am still sitting alone in my bedroom because my hedgehog hates me. I had him for 7 months, fed him everyday, and offered some snacks, but no matter what i do he doesn't want to hang out with me :'(
I used to own a hedgehog (that unfortunately died months ago from old age :c) but she was a breeder her whole life. She was grumpy, just wanted to eat and then sleep. I found so much things in this video that were a big part of why her and I bonded so much eventually. I gave her a long time to get used to her home, but after holding her everyday, putting my shirt in her little hut to cuddle with, and the rest of the tips in this video, she would wake up everytime she heard me come home from school and climb up on her cage until I would hold her. It was so cute. I miss her, but I'm hoping to get a new baby one soon. So thank you for this video!
TheSubatomicPlatypus yes they can dumbass just try getting your hand close and aggrivating it, it injects a few quills with venom to infect the predator, however they grow again and the quills are tooken out safely if you are careful
Jasmine Edwards if you beeed any animal without knowing what you are doing they can potentially get hurt some animals may die. So I just said to make sure you know what you are doing so you do not end up hurting the hedgehogs

Youre joking... right? Processed foods could kill nearly any pet. Except for dogs, which habe the strongest animal immune system, so they will eat nearly anything you give them and dont even get me STARTED on what would happen if you feed spicy food.

1. Do not leave your hedgehog for a few days when they get home, make sure you are handling them for at least 30 minutes a day especially when you first get them. This is because they need to become familiar to you and your scent because if your hedgehog does not and you suddenly start introducing them to something new as soon as they have gotten used to their new home, bonding with your hedgie will be much more difficult... trust me, I know from experience as a proud owner of 3 boys. 2. If you are petting the underside of your hedgehog please don't keep them underside up for to long, this position is where they are most vulnerable and it will make them nervous and skittish (I know this is random but It was not said in the video and I think it is quite important) That's it lol, this video was great don't get me wrong but I had to point out these things :) also wow I can't believe you read this entire thing 😂
If you ever happen to get this, I’ve had my hedgehog for just over 2 days now and I haven’t held him I have just left him in the cage for a while with my T-shirt in there. Is now a good time to try to pick him up or something like that
I own a pretty grumpy hedgehog, and like you said they still need to be cared for even if they don't necessarily enjoy human company. You make a choice when you own a pet to care for it even if it's not what you expected it to be as a pet.
so funny story, about 4 years ago my gf and I adopted a cat (Cirrus) and after a few months it was apparent that he needed a cat friend (and I wanted another) so we adopted another cat (Nimbus) from some guy living in a log cabin in the middle of nowhere... well he was feral and 3 years later he's only just starting to kinda sorta trust us.... He doesn't love us but we love him lol

My hedgehog is like the complete opposite of all the hedgehogs I've heard of. He is 2 months old and he was never shy, not even when we picked him up for the first time at the breeders. He loves to be pet, and often looks for it, I've only ever heard him hiss once (my cat got too close), he doesn't get grumpy when I take him out during the day, and he often happily sits in my sweater pocket and goes everywhere with me during the day, either sleeping in my pocket, or poking his head out to meet new people.

My imaginary hedgehog 🦔 ran away to a land where they sell chili dogs daily for free, bought red shoes, striped himself blue, and was creating plans to combat a red bearded guy. Weird. I’ve failed my hedgehog.
Hi! Yesterday I got my first ever hedgehog named Doug. He is in a cinnamon color and he's is 1 year old. All his life he has been a breeder. The guy that had him before just wanted him to breed with an albino to make a rare kind of hedgehog worth more money so he could sell those. Then he sold Doug to our pet store and we have always wanted one, so we got it. He is in a 42-18 inch bunny cage with a hut, water bottle, 12 inch wheel, food dish and toilet paper roll. He is very very skidish and jumpy. You can't do anything near him with out him rolling into a ball and hissing. Its always quite frightening to go and pick him up when he wants nothing to do with you. Do you (or anyone else reading this) have any tips? I'm going to put one of my tee shirts in there for him and were going to start handling him in a day. So yeah please help!

I am so glad I found this video ^^ I just got my first hedgehog for my 21st birthday, I named her Lulu (after my favorite League of Legends Champion) and I am just in awe with her. I noticed that my hedgie does a lot of the same things yours does. (Hides when I bring her out with the light on in my room) Sometimes I'll hear her scuddling around and it will wake me up but I don't mind at all. I'll just look at her with the night vision on my camera. :D I also have her in my room where it is quiet and well.. It smells like me in this room but I was wondering whether or not to put a shirt of mine in her hedgie sleeping bag. Will definitely do it now though! She loves her meal worms and I usually give them to her when she's on my bed. I am not new to raising exotic animals so I'm glad that I'm on the right path and this video has definitely helped me as well!

My hedgie is weird. She doesn't like to eat anything but her kitten food (although recently she took meal worms into consideration surprisingly). She actually seems happier if i wake her up during the day because once she wakes up she seems pretty active and not tired. When i get her up at night or take her out when she's already awake, she seems more grumpy. By grumpy i mean she will hiss when i move her or touch her or sometimes just hiss at nothing (she doesn't spike up though). So from my experience I prefer to wake her up in the after noon to play with her and take her on a walk :)
My hedgehog is 3 years old and has barely been touched in her life so she is ALWAYS scared and it makes me so sad but we will bond till we are the best of friends 😁😁😁
Lmao the part where you said to hold your hedgehog everyday, that part is so true. When I was still new to hedgie owning, I would go sleep at a friend’s place for the night and my hog would be alone for the night in his cage. But the next morning when I come back, I get the cold shoulder from my boy. He’ll huff at me, bite me and spike up a lot more than he would’ve if I slept in the room. Strange how just being gone for the night can make him mean 😂
Hi! I have a pillow that had fabric sewed on top of it and there is a rip in the fabric. She LOVES to sleep in the pillow (not the inside where there is the stuffing but inside the fabric area that was sewed onto it). Its very roomy there so it wont suffocate her or anything but i want to ask your opinion on if thats okay to continue letting her do that?
Question: which is easier for young kids coz me and my brother are gtting 1 and hes 10 and aint rlly use 2small animals. or are they both easy to care 4 once understod what to do?
My hedgehog literally hates me, every time I go near him he balls up and jumps up and down, he poos and wees everywhere, I've had him for a few months and I've never even felt his underneath, he loves running around but as soon as I put my hand slowly towards him he balls up or just runs around it, I don't know what to do and it's really getting me down, I've tried so harddddddddd 😭
It is a very good idea to try hand feeding them so they will associate your scent with food. My girlfriend has a hedgehog and she got him to accept her quickly when she started smelling like food.
My hedgehog is the sweetest baby. I got her as a rescue for Christmas as a gift to my dad And ever since day one she's been so sweet. She's also spoilt with lots of treats she was never given before (she doesn't know what any food is aside from cat food so it's interesting to explore new foods with her.) She also sleeps in my bed. She likes to have a pillow when sleeping for some reason and lies flat on her stomach and I find she sleeps for much longer and more easily in my bed than her cage. (She has cage issues that I'm working on. Part of her being a rescue. Previous owners kept her in a cage too small for her to turn around even.)

awesome Angelina well, first you will need a cage. I recommend C&C cages, or large rabbit cages. You will need to get a wheel for them, but make sure it is a solid wheel. They cannot run on wire wheels. For food, you can use cat food, I used to use Royal Canin, but I switched. If you are going to feed them cat food, I recommend Royal Canin. I'm currently feeding my hedgie Mazuris Insectivore diet. They will need sleeping pouches, blankets and huts for comfort and to sleep in. Oh and mealworms and crickets are considered a treat, so don't feed them too many. 5 - 10 is best. Make sure the room temperature is 75 - 65 F. Take them to the vet for yearly checkups. And make sure the room you have them in is quiet, and doesn't have strong smells as they have sensitive hearing and smelling. That's about all you need.
Hi! I just picked up my baby hedgehog today. When I met the breeder she let me hold her but once we got home she hasn't let me touched her at all so I've been trying to give her space. How long do you think I should wait to try to touch her again and what kind of snacks or treats do hedgies like and dislike? Also how should I go about bathing her? Should I just let her walk around in the water for a while with some dawn soap or should I scrub her? Anyways thanks for the videos! Your hedgie is very cute!
They eat cat food,I preffer Royal Canin.Don't use soap,they don't like it.Just let him walk around.Make sure the water is hot.It isn't weird if she/he doesn't like being holded,hedgehogs like being alone.Buy him a wheel,like those for hamsters but it has to be bigger and plastic,they can't spin,on the wire ones.Let him roam around the room at night and make sure there's nothing that he can get stuck in or that could possibly hurt him.Get him a rabbit cage.Make him a cardboard house,so he can go in it and sleep.They sleep a lot.Put pellets in the cage,and some stuff which I forgot the name of.And make sure to use gloves while holding him,because they jump and shake when you try to pick them up.They also breathe extremely fast when you try picking them up,it's normal.

I'm 11 too! But I live in Canada I would suggest you go for the most cheapest things and then later on upgrade I love these creatures and would love one I would order it online or at a pet store ask your parents about it and see if there ok with it. And tell them you will be responsible because they are a big thing to think about
Enchanted64 You can look online to see if there's a breeder near you that is selling an african pygmy hedgehog. Ask your parents if it's okay for you to have one. You should understand that hedgehogs can be a bit harder to cuddle than dogs, so make sure you have the patience and time to take care of them. :)
Never feed them MEALWORMS NOT GOOD FOR THEM WOULD U FEED YOUR CHILDREN CAKES SWEETS CHOCOLATE EVERY DAY. WE HAVE 5 that come to our garden use to give them MEALWORMS but was advised not to extremely bad for them and that came from a HEDGEHOG SPECIALIST WHO TAKE CARE OF LAST COUNT WAS 35 please do not give them mealworms. I had no idea hedgehogs were so cute. Didn't even really know what they looked like until watching your videos. Shows how naive I am. Sonic was my only reference.
My dad use to breed them when I was a young child and I held them constantly and even when I played my Super Nintendo they would curl up in my lap and I use to take them in my sand box and my neighbor who was 2 years younger and i built them tunes and trenches but they would go in the hand made caves and sleep it's funny looking back that I never had one get loose on me Nor do I remember them ever biting me they had bite my neighbor and my parents but not me
HELP!! I got my Hedgehog 2 weeks ago and I handle him everyday but he keeps biting me whenever I try to do the scooping motion when picking him up. Any advice you can possibly give me??

I adopted my hedgehog like two days ago , she's always turn to a ball or make a sound whenever I try to touch her or greet her, do they take a few months to make them feel comfortable around me? I don't have anyone to ask since Malaysian didn't have a hedgehog as a pet, please reply me ;-;
No hate meant but it is a lie that you should leave your hedge alone for the first few days. Bonding can be done immediately. I just don’t want people getting the wrong message. Hedgehogs will be very skittish but your bonding will calm them.
Nice Video. Sad that many don't know that Animals are actually Unique and they have a form of Personality. The intellect, abilitys, and most importantly: the ability to feel emotion, is understimated by most Humans. I find that sad.
2:12 I disagree with this. You DON’T want to leave them alone for the first couple of days. Yes they need to get used to their new cage but while they’re getting used to that they aren’t getting used to you which can lead to aggression and biting. You need to handle them the first couple days the same as you would months from then so they can also get used to you and their cage.

I have a beautifull hedgehog named Margarita and sometimes I feel she hates me because she always crawls into a ball when I try to pick her up and she poops in my hand so I feel like I'm making her super uncomfortable and I get scared that she will never love me haha. I've had her for 2 weeks and we are still getting used to each other, she is the first hedgehog i've ever had so I want to make sure that I'm doing everything the right way :D
Just wanted to let you know your video has helped me a lot. I just got my first hedgehog and she was quite grumpy. But these tricks seem to be helping her be less grumpy.
How do you pick up a hedgehog if it's about their first week in your home and they curl up in a ball and hiss and pop when your hands are near their sides? It's nearly impossible for me to pick mine up without wearing gloves or using a cloth
