Hallelujah Anyhow is the latest studio album from Hiss Golden Messenger, out September 22 worldwide on Merge Records. Its ten new songs, penned by HGM principal M.C. Taylor, were recorded with Brad Cook, Phil Cook, Chris Boerner, Josh Kaufman, Darren Jessee, Michael Lewis, and Scott Hirsch. Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, Tift Merritt, Skylar Gudasz, Tamisha Waden, Mac McCaughan, and John Paul White provided vocal harmonies.
“I see the dark clouds. I was designed to see them. They’re the same clouds of fear and destruction that have darkened the world since Revelations, just different actors. But this music is for hope. That’s the only thing I want to say about it. Love is the only way out. I’ve never been afraid of the darkness; it’s just a different kind of light. And if some days that belief comes harder than others, hallelujah anyhow.” -M.C. Taylor
First heard this song working at Bass Pro in the Florida Keys, reminded me sooo much of Colorado, being from there originally. Now I'm back home near my mountains and still jammin it.
I think that this song is actually about gospel that bridges the Old Testament to the new. Handsome Johnny is in reference to John the Baptist and the rich man who cries like a crocodile is Lazarus.
why does everything have to be so divisive and inherently political? why include clips of people rocking slogans like "no ban no wall" and "demand action for gun sense" shit. illegal immigration is a serious problem in this country, as is gun violence... but GUN CONTROL DOESN'T WORK. That's not how you fix the problem. this song and it's message are absolutely incredible, but the video almost ruins it with just those two clips going off topic
LYRICS: Love me harder Cry like a thunder Kick the floorboards Paint it a different color Another year older Debt slightly deeper Paycheck smaller Goddamn I need a teacher Rock me daddy, I'm still your kid The ways to you are oh so very different Beauty in the broken American moment Rock me daddy, happiness ain't free I see where you're at, I know you can see me Beauty in the broken American moment Tell the truth dear Don't be jaded That's no way to play it To say it, to feel it Lord, make me thankful Though it ain't easy Give it away freely It'll come back to you eventually Rock me daddy, I'm still your kid The ways to you are oh so very different Beauty in the broken American moment Rock me daddy, happiness ain't free I see where you're at, I know you can see me Beauty in the broken American moment Rock me daddy, I'm still your kid The ways to you are oh so very different Beauty in the broken American moment Rock me daddy, happiness ain't free I see where you're at, I know you can see me Beauty in the broken American moment
LYRICS: Play it Play it weird Play it nimble Make it lasting Make it faithful 'Cross the hill I hear voices in the gloaming In the echo Enough to hear Close beside me But far from me Laughing lonely Wear the fear Burn the candle Can you handle Cherry candy? {Verse 2} No retreat No surrender Make it tender Make it lasting Make it faithful At the table Sunday morning I've been roaming {Chorus} Oh, my wing just learned to fly Just a little way in an empty sky Oh, my wing, how I long to use you In the blackrock hills where the kids are fooling {Verse 3} It's a brief wheel of fortune When you need me I'll be running Tired horses Made me wander 'Cross the yonder I hear voices In the echo Enough to hear Close beside me Back from me Laughing lonely Wear the fear Burn the candle Can you handle {Chorus} Oh, my wing just learned to fly Just a little way in an empty sky Oh, my wing, how I long to use you In the blackrock hills I got caught fooling
Now I'm bound to Nazareth town With all those mistakes I've made For God is good, and it's understood, but he moves in mysterious ways He solved all fault bond, my rough, and rowdy friends In fact, I was getting wrecked in a Motel 6 when he showed up in the back So goodbye Sweet Genevieve, and goodbye my Tulsa friends But hey, everybody, did you hear the news? Jesus shot me in the head But just as well I was going to hell, I wasted everything No more shooting pool, no more getting drunk Now, I'm going to see the king So I'm on the road again Yes, I'm on the road again No more rolling down that wicked track I'm going to see the king But, oh Lord, I needed him Oh, Lord, I needed him Don't be late at those pearly gates Come on, let me in Spent some time in Jerusalem Where I tried my best to behave And I told the town how they cut him down And he rose up from the grave Would you believe they laughed at me Nor will they will not let me be Next thing I know, I was skipping stones on the Sea of Galilee So I'm on the road again Yes, I'm on the road again No more rolling down that wicked track I'm going to see the king But, oh Lord, I needed him Oh, Lord, I needed him Don't be late at those pearly gates Come on, let me in A time will come when the chosen one He calls on us in thanks He loves us all, but the ones who fall hold a special place in his ranks At least I hope this is how it goes Since I'm just 'bout out of breath So hey everybody, did you hear the news? Jesus shot me in the head So I'm on the road again Yes, I'm on the road again No more rolling down that wicked track I'm going to see the king But, oh Lord, I needed him Oh, Lord, I needed him Don't be late at those pearly gates Come on, let me in So I'm on the road again Yes, I'm on the road again No more rolling down that wicked track I'm gonna see the king But, oh Lord, I needed him Oh, Lord, I needed him Don't be late at those pearly gates Come on, let me in
