I post each of these videos at the conclusion of my work with a typewriter, when it's ready to be offered (usually on eBay) for sale to a new owner. These machines are built to last -- unlike the modern devices that we dispose of regularly, a good typewriter can have several owner/caretakers in its lifetime. I intend to keep on restoring typewriters and putting them back into service as long as I'm still learning new things (I am, almost every week!) and as long as this goofy hobby continues to be fun.

Triumph and Adler had merged when this machine was produced. The Tippa from this era is one of my favorite lightweight typewriters.

Got two of these, one for parts. Love them, but my right margin is slipping. I’ll type a couple of lines then the bell starts going off halfway down the page, carriage stops. I’m pretty hand at working in them but this is tricky. Have it stuck with a paper clip right now, haha. Have a KMG coming in the mail with the tombstone shaped keys . Mmmm it looks spotless. I bet it’ll work. Listing didn’t say.

I have a 1951 Remington All New Personal, which was basically the first version of the QR, which replaced the ANP two or three years after the ANP's introduction in 1949. It's a very relaxing and comforting machine to type with. A true gentleman's typewriter, I feel like.

I appreciate your videos. What would you say are the differences between the Brother Accord 10 and the Brother Accord 12?
@NisKildegaard
@NisKildegaard Месяц назад
The two are identical except for the width of the platen. The 10 and 12 are so-named in reference to platen width, in inches. Because the Accord 10 is more compact, it comes with a snap-on cover that forms the carrying case. The Accord 12 with its wider carriage needs a separate case, made of molded plastic.

Thank you for putting this one up. I just bought a 1955 Medallion II SCM for Golden Shield, a chopped 5 series really, a Super no less as it has the giant rocker for the Tab set and clear. It too is in this burnt copper color, and its a Deluxe Line too, I had no idea how beautiful that center title plate is on that machine. I bought mine off eBay so I don't have it yet, but I have wanted a 5 series and a Golden Shield typewriter for a really long time, and I'm getting both now, I'm really excited. I'm a collector and User of Typewriters, a kind of rarity, as I'm told normally you have Collectors who collect Typewriters but don't really use them, and then you have people who Use a manual Typewriter but they don't really collect them, I do both. In case anyone was wondering Smith Corona made Typewriters for other companies, Sears, Montgomery Wards, Singer, Motorola, and Golden Shield (GS). GS 1946, made radios they built what was known as the Atomic-Tone, they also made household appliances, vacuums, Trash Compactors, Fridges, and Range top Ovens, or what we'd just call Stoves today. I think they made heaters too. Anyway there was this thing around the early 50's-60's wherein companies would have Typewriter manufacturers make a Typewriter to carry their name, not too far fetched as Typewriters were like the home computer of the day, it was a big deal to have a branded Typewriter so of course you wanted your favorite brands on your Typewriter. And the mega Typewriter company was of course Smith Corona, the M for Merchan wasn't slapped on till '64 when SC bought Merchan the mecanical calculator company. Well if you notice the body design of the other branded Typewriters are basically 4 (1940) and 5 series (1950) then later the 6 and 7 series (1960/1970) like there is a 60s Corsair body style Golden Shield even in the turquoise blue the Corsair came in also known as Meteor. But the earlier 5 series was the plan A Voyager, Tower, Medallion I and later a Medallion II, only Voyager and Medallion I/II had has that golden paper ruler front and back and in the Deluxe Line, think all had In The Deluxe Line. But the 5 series Golden Shield is real the special one, you see they made 5 and super 5 GS typewriters and "Chopped" that rounded face off, the 5 series of Golden Shield typewriters were the only branded Typewriters to have their own unique body. After that it was too expensive so SCM decided to just use the bodies they had to do a kind if self promoting under the labeled brands so the Corsair body was used in the 60's and then the Galaxie body in the mid 60's start and mid 70' until the Electra Body 70's to 1980/81 and then it was plastic wheel Typewriters abd then sadly none. Also in my research I found a blog about how GS told SCM they didn't care they left the design and decoration up to SCM do your best, wildest, being the World leader in Typewriters, GS put it all in their hands, and what a beautiful job they did, Of all the branded Typewriters the GS chopped 5 series in that burnt copper that warm autumn feel, ine person in here said made them think of the Fall, Books, and fireplace. They are the most unique looking, they say rare, these machines certainly look rare. And in a way they are. SCM made a ba-zillion Typewriters, a mess of Branded Typewriters, but their arent a ton of GS, the burnt copper and Medallion II series is of the hardest to fine now. They will run you a oretty oenny, ask me how I know, in fact the one I bought was 300 dollars more than my 1959 Hermes 3000. At that is in excellent condition of the first series as it doesn't have those case holes in the wrist bar. Later curve models '61-64ish have those holes where the case lid latches on. Yeah whew 300 more for a SCM revranded Golden Shield more than a Hermes. And last fun note, that tiny Golden Shield in the center of the Typewriter, that's actually 10k gold plated. According to another article I read. I just Googled 1955 SCM Golden Shield typewriter history, and I found a good amount of articles and blogger postes and Typewriter pages you can go read basically everything frome all that which is now all here. Absolutely one of the most beautiful SCM Typewriters, and thank you. Sounds a lot like the Snappy Tine of a 5 series, not as snappy and punchy like a Galaxie or Galaxie Deluxe which I have one of those too. Thanks for reading and have a absolutely amazing beautiful awesome day/night, and week and weekend!

I don't know what it is, but the mechanics and dimensions of this machine just seem to go with both my speed and touch-typing style. I still enjoy the Olympia SM9, but have to switch back after a while, because it just doesn't have the same lunkiness, I guess.

I seldom use the laptop and rely on fountain pen and paper for every work. I really want to consider a typewriter. I have seen this particular typewriter up for a sale. Should I consider this as a beginner? My knowledge on typewriters are whimsical. I like the appearance of hermes, remington, smith corona etc but I don't think I can spend so much money on them😢 May I get some help through you with some recommendations as well? Something of this sort, portable and small.
@NisKildegaard
@NisKildegaard Месяц назад
There is actually an ideal size for a typewriter: the full-sized office machine. (They didn't build them so big just for the sake of bigness.) Every portable, at least to a certain extent, does sacrifice a bit of functionality to achieve its lighter weight and smaller form factor. "Semi-portables" are machines that have carrying cases, but you wouldn't want to take them, say, through airports. These are great for home use, and can be set away in a closet. Among the best "true" portables are models including this Adler Tippa (there was also a variant built by Triumph), the Hermes (but it's so expensive!), and the Lettera 22 and 32. Condition and good state of tune are key -- ideally you want to be able to test-drive a typewriter, or at least deal with a knowledgeable seller with a good trading record. For starters, you might enjoy reading Richard Polt's excellent book, "The Typewriter Revolution."

@@NisKildegaard Thank you so much for your insights. It is a revelation. I am attracted towards objects from a bygone era and time,it almost feels like time travelling with a typewriter. I really appreciate the curves of the Adler tippa,and also I do in a way seek an aesthetic appeal in terms of color too. I wish to ask your thoughts on BROTHER typewriters? It is almost accessible on most selling sites which makes me curious too.
@NisKildegaard
@NisKildegaard Месяц назад
@@jane5944 My youtube collection includes more than 70 videos of Brother typewriters -- I'm a big fan. Because so many were made and they hold up so well, they're fairly inexpensive as lightweight portables go. That said, they lack the vintage elegance of many classic machines. Vintage beauty and functionality are the two main drivers of price here, so if you're willing to go with a more recent, less "classic" typewriter, you can save some money. Here's a look at one good example of the Brother portable (made for Sears) at work: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jXy3KYx2QDc.html

PLEASE HELP! I have a Coronet Electric 10 that was working great but I cleaned it and now the carriage won't move! I can't find the lever to unlock it online for this model.....
@NisKildegaard
@NisKildegaard Месяц назад
The Coronet electric uses exactly the same carriage locking, or centering, mechanism as the one you see on this manual mahine. If you push the carriage to the right (as if beginning a line) and it won't move when you type, something else is wrong. Check all the drive belts. If your machine types, but only on the same space repeatedly, something has been knocked out of kilter in the escapement (the clockworks of the typewriter). Several things could have been bumped out of place in your cleaning, and it's really impossible to diagnose without having hands on the typewriter. If you could share a video, I"ll try to help.
