The older magic formats like modern and legacy are my favorites. They require a different skillset than ygo which makes for a nice change of pace but still remain very complex( harder than ygo tbh).

I honestly thought mtg was so boring coming from yugioh, but high power commander is genuinely so fun. Sometimes I almost forget theres a mana system because things can happen so fast anyway, but 1v1 magic really doesnt do it for me still. I like the chaos of 4 people which is why Yugioh Domain needs to catch on more lowkey

I’m a big believer in Elestrals. To me the gameplay is closest to the kind of interaction you get in Yu-Gi-Oh!, but with enough new mechanics that it feels different. The biggest downside of the game right now is obviously that it’s not widely available anywhere, but it’s growing. The game is in over 200 LGS in the US now, after being in 0 just a few months ago. Definitely my favorite game on this list.

Depends on where you come from. Coming from both YGO and MtG, I find Star Wars Unlimited and Flesh and Blood extremely enjoyable. Regarding your point about the size of those specific games: Flesh and Blood recently expanded to Japan and is doing well; Star Wars is growing well and had a large showing at GenCon. So yes, there are other games worth trying.

Games that miss the mark and you put Flesh and blood on that list? Flesh and blood is so much fun. The meta is very open and has always been open since its inception. It rewards players who know their deck well and their match ups. Has cash prizing for their premier tournaments unlike yugioh. The card art is fantastic, some of the mtg artists actually left to submit their art for flesh and blood. The game is already 5 years old and still going strong. If you’re on the fence I highly suggest you try it out.

Digimon is probably the most unique and best designed card game. One piece is awesome but theres nothing really special about it, its very plain and easy.
@Xenonfuji
@Xenonfuji 9 часов назад
One Piece at a surface level is easy, but the game isn't easy once you get down to it. There are lots of decisions to make, such as "should I swing face or should I clear board?" You don't even always want to swing even if they have no cards on field. Your opponent gains card advantage when they take damage, so sometimes it's a bad idea to get aggressive as it will allow them to get a larger hand to start fighting back

I'm open to trying new tcgs but none other than yugioh and somewhat magic have retained any of my interest for the long term. I don't love games with mana based mechanics, nor do I like card games like one piece or dbz because they feel like cheap cash grabs for a preexisting manga/anime that isn't at all centered about a card game in the text. I respect yugioh and magic for centralizing everything around their game and inspiring so many other tcgs. Pokémon from my very limited experience also feels like magic made for weenie hut Jr and I don't like most of the art or gameplay. It feels much better as a game on a console.

One piece is probably THE definition of easy to learn, hard to master. It doesn't take much to build a deck and play the correct cards from your hand, but the complexity can really take of in terms of attacking values, attacking patterns and ressource management, since basically every single card in your hand, life and mana pool can be used as a ressource in multiple different ways. And other times you just draw your oppressive curve and have to put 0 thought into your gameplay.

I helped make and test Lorcana before it was the game it is today, and it’s a fun game but I don’t personally like the terms (quest for lore, sing, etc). I get it’s by Disney but it’s hard to take the game seriously and competitively when I’m using children’s terms like oh boy I’m gunna sing a song..something about that doesn’t sound as epic as “casting a spell”. I also don’t really like how little interaction there is between players. Where’s the interaction on my opponent’s turn to try and stop their game plan? It feels very race-y like I can just ignore what my opponent’s doing, tap to 20 first and I won the race. Elestrals I’d personally play if it wasn’t a sellout/overly sponsored game, and with the way aDrive is marketing it (he’s a Pokémon player btw..the video games I should mention, not the card game) it feels like the Raid Shadow Legends of card games atm. I’m sure it’s fun for some people though.
@connermorgan9223
@connermorgan9223 10 минут назад
I find it hard to believe you made and test the game if you don’t understand the technical play between players. Especially playing Ruby/amethyst, the skill is knowing when to transition playing for value/board to going aggressive. Ignore your opponent and race to 20? Sure if you’re playing hyper aggro, otherwise you absolutely have to engage with your opponents plays. Just because you can’t do it on THEIR turn doesn’t mean there is no interaction.

You didn't enjoy Digimon? Its probably my favourite card game. Think the memory system is cool, and depending on the deck you are on, the deck the opponent is on and how much memory you have left, it leaves some very complex decisions both deck building and playing turns. The lack of shuffling also increases the skill of the game with decks like d-brigade that returns cards from the trash to the top of the deck and bot decks stuff so you know the order and can use the effects to play cards off the top of the deck being very skill ecpressive and then mastemon doing similar

I forgot to mention my favourite part is that apart from the memory's tracker (which is often the size of 2 cards and is cut in half) and a dice, you don't need to carry anything else to play the game (deck obviously you need but still) you don't need a life point tracker, don't need resource counters etc

Had to agree with you on magic cards looking boring. It's the format and the border design, not the actual art itself which is fine. Easily worse looking cards than Pokemon/yugioh/one piece. Even Digimon and DBZ cards look better. Every now and then mtg has a nice looking full art but 99% of their card pool is art stuck in terrible card borders.

People threatening to play other games is good for lighting a fire under Konami's ass. Even casual viable decks are printed to purposely cost too much aftermarket and Konami has yet to be taught their lesson as sales are still growing under this. Sadly it's bad for their OTS as their player count drop and local shops stop stocking the cards players need in the future. Personally no game will ever replace Yu-Gi-Oh for me.

@minnayuan2591 4 часа назад
@@Protech428 Hot take, but YGO's skill floor is absolutely insane, but the skill ceiling is not as crazy as people put it. Likewise, I'd give enjoyability like a 5 at best. The issue is YGO forces you to interact or else you lose. Interaction while likely is also never guaranteed. Sometimes you see no non-engine, other times your opponent completely prevents you from using it. There's a lot of incidences of false interaction as well (What's the point of interacting with a Snake Eyes Fiendsmith board, if they're just going to rebuild it and kill you next turn). Another major issue with YGO is that the inherent nature of the game means that decks try to build as uninteractive of a board as possible, because that ensures the best probability of winning. So yes YGO isn't solatire, that's a meme. But it's also not nearly as interactive as people claim it to be.
@BuddhaMelffyQueen
@BuddhaMelffyQueen 2 часа назад
@@minnayuan2591 the skill ceiling is definitely extremly high.(just look back to an actually skill intensive format in Tearlaments as an example I or any random cant pick up full power Tear and beat Jesse Kotton in a mirror match) As someone who's definitely a capable duelist I still don't have half the skill that Joshua Schmidt, Pak, and Jesse Kotton have(and Pak started around the same time I did). And while I see your point on it not being as interactive being able to actually do something at all on your opponents first turn is far more than any game has. Instances in Magic are the closest thing any card game I've played has to anything that yugioh can do(yet you still have to get the chance to set up before you can play them thus they're not instantly impactful like handtraps in yugioh).

I’ve never really cared that much about the return on investment I just feel proud that I was able to assemble my deck, pilot it well, and thus top an event. I will say that I can see that topping a major event multiple times probably lowers the thrill you get when you do win. Idk it feels like this is just an issue that people have who consistently top and everyone else is just having fun.
