In Asian countries, a lot of the time the pressure comes from family. Next time, ask your Asian friend to see if their parents imposed some sort of expectations like earning a high salary etc. These expectations are often unreachable and then you are labelled unworthy.
oh my god the way i gasped when he asked if she deserved a hug!!!! terrible lesson starting very young. she has to perform to be loved. she’s not lovable if she has big feelings!! what a major failure.

We have these in the Netherlands too. Very sad that some people can't take care of their children and seek this as a solution but it's safer to provide something like this so the babies are found straightaway and be taken care of ❤❤
leaving her to have her feelings is good imo but teaching her that she has to 'earn' and 'deserve' love or respect by being compliant is not instilling a good foundation for decision making, giving her a negative inner dialogue, and could teach her to get walked on in life. source: how my dad raised me
people are missing that he didn’t “just leave her”. He stepped back to see if she could regulate by herself, He knows his daughter better than we do and if he thinks she knows better than to throw a fit over her pjs than so be it? He goes in and she asks for a hug which he asks if she deserves it. That’s where people think he’s being cruel, but he’s simply showing that crying isn’t a way to get what you want and you can see him go up to console her anyways, he did this perfectly.
This is why men are needed, all she knows is crying gets her what shes wants hes teaching her another way of dealing with emotions than just being steamed rolled by her demands
To every woman, we also have natural instincts towards babys but yours is far stronger and goes through the lengths of keeping the baby alive because not to long ago it was normal for most babies to die. A child will cry as a weapon be careful because you want your child to be a member of society and if she is spoiled she will have a hard time unless she hangs out on yachts.
I hope for one day to be roommates with a lot of people they may not have money but they have a connections that “chaebols” don’t have not even with their kids. I strive to be like this it seems so fun. Struggling in life as well but I’d rather struggle with a group than alone. I hope one day I can move to Korea and make lots of friends.
why don't they go back to their country when they are pregnant...so their child can have the mother's citizenship...poor unregistered babies end up in orphanages
It breaks my heart to see people working very hard, yet they are forced to rent to live in such inhumane conditions because they are paid so little. People who got sick and lost everything. People who blame themselves and are ashamed about things they couldn't control. Yes, the documentary has shown us there can be positive community and connection in a goshiwon, but you can have those things in better living conditions, too. Studio apartments can have a program to check in on their residents if they wanted to. If this is all that the elderly can afford on public assistance, then the public assistance amount is not enough. If this is where sick people end up, this is not enough. I say all this knowing that my own country treats its sick and its elderly just as poorly, we just throw them out on the streets and into jails. :(
I am so happy for you Jami to see you found your mom and reunited with her. Enjoy your time with her. My mom passed away 5 years ago. I still have dad and family in Korea.
I just left my very high stress / fast paced I.T. job working in a very busy MSP - I couldn't be happier. It was killing me. Sometimes, you just have to stop, do nothing, breathe deep, and absorb what the universe is trying to tell you. We're not meant to be slaves to society. There's more to life than just money and constantly trying to be busy, just for the sake of being busy and meeting societal expectations and standards. This amazing documentary reminds me how important it is to just re-adjust and prioritize what's important: health, positivity, and good mental health.
Alrhough asking if she deserves a hug seems harsh. In retrospect, i think he's trying to teach her that yes, you deserve love, but bad actions do not mean you get a hug or kiss. It means you learn. And yet, father still gave her a hug even when he asked, i wish i had a father like him
Idk why so many people are hurt at that question and it comes off as projecting. He asked her if she deserved a hug after throwing a fit for hours, it made her think about her actions and he gave her a hug right after. Apparently that means he doesn’t love her? Get real
