If ever there was a genre of music and a modern band who could accurately interpret the French Revolution it was metal and Gojira. Those were some hard core times, but out of the revolution came the age of enlightenment and the French Republic . Liberty, Egalite, Fraternite (liberty, Equality, Fraternity)
Hey, give Kelly Clarkson a break. She's a metal head! She got so excited seeing the performance and stated it was beautiful! Props to her response, which may help expand positive thoughts of others not familiar to this great and beautiful music!
It's too bad that there is so much controversy over the other opening "acts" at the Olympics. Gojira is one of my favorite bands and I'm so happy they got this global spotlight!
It's worth noting that it was also a reference to the 2015 Paris attack at the Bataclan. The band playing then was Eagles of death metal (obviously they're not metal but heh, there's "death metal" in the name) With the boat reprensenting Paris whose motto is "fluctuat nec mergitur" (she is rocked by the waves but does not sink)
Gojira was awesome. But the transformers doing the last supper killed any momentum it would have had. Nobody will be talking about gojira, but about that abomination
I’m Italian and you can’t understand how much I’m jealous. Just the thought of having this kind of show at an hypothetic Italian olympics would make the organizers throw up, I love your country so much and it endorses fully my ideals.
Everyone seems to miss the fact Marina Viotti GROWLED! at the part after they sang together, before the breakdown. You can see her actually scream before waving her hand up again
To those saying "they aren't death metal" - consider that a band with their back catalogue and roots in tech death getting to play in front of that many people will absolutely be introducing a lot more people to death metal as a result of this performance. Even if it's not what they write *now*, they're still a representative of a more extreme style of metal than most mainstream bands in the genre dive into, and that's the entire point.
Thanks too all the Gojira is not death metal posts. Love Gojira, but I was thinking, "Can we really call them death metal, though?" When he called them death metal. Regardless, it was a sick performance from the entire design, the location, the history, the fact they went for the throat with it instead of trying to water it down for the masses.
People finding their back catalogue as a result of this, even if some of what they make isn’t under the “death” banner, is absolutely exposing more people to that subgenre. Don’t think it’s unjustified calling them that
@@JacobAndrsn fair point, I agree and know that Gojira's music is definitely informed/influenced/inspired by the more extreme subgenres of metal. It's probably unfair for me to say that they are or are not death metal it's just not really the first place I would go to when reflecting on them.
I was sad cause the general mix on the channel I was watching it on was crap - not just for Gojira but for Gaga and the French artist. The performance hit so much better when I watched other feeds on youtube. Such a good performance.
