Do we need to wait until after the police visit to apply for the carta d’identità? I have seen conflicting info online, some say it can be done after presenting the documents
@thelemonabroad
@thelemonabroad 3 месяца назад
I think it all depends on your comune! If it’s been a little while since you submitted your application, you could visit the Ufficio Anagrafe to see if it has been processed yet, and to see if it would be possible to make the appointment for the carta d’identità.

I agree with you when you said that language learning is a journey that never ends. For me, it’s been a struggle at first to learn Vietnamese by myself. But once I started using Immersive Translate that was when I finally made some progress. I use it to watch my shows and movies on Netflix every day, and that’s how I’ve become immersed in the language. It’s been quite a journey so far, and I’m quite pleased with the results.

I'm trying to get the Italian citizenship by descent correct. Please some help: My great-grandfather was born in Sicily in 1892 and came to America in 1910. He wasn't naturalized. He married another unnaturalized Italian in 1915 and gave birth to my grandfather in 1918. My grandfather married an Italian descent American and gave birth in 1944 to my mother (an only child). My mother was impregnated by an Italian man but they never married, and his name wasn't put on my birth certificate. Based on this narrative, might I be eligible to be an Italian citizen by descent? Thank you!

A suggestion - I found you through the Italian citizenship video, and I think if you made more of those they would get lots of attention! Especially videos that really walk you through the process in detail - how to order birth certificates from Italy, how to request documents from the US, how your embassy appointments went- these are videos that I’ve looked for on RU-vid but not seen much of, because many speak more generally.

I just never understood people wanting to leave their country of birth if they grew up in a first world country.

I am thinking of retiring to Italy in the next 5-10 years. Healthcare is one of my priorities on deciding on where to retire. How difficult is it to communicate in the system for someone that will be learning Italian language on the fly? I fear not being able to communicate in medical terminology until I have learned enough Italian. And I don't know how long that will take at my age.
@thelemonabroad
@thelemonabroad 6 месяцев назад
Hi! I totally understand healthcare being a priority, it's definitely something that is for me! In terms of language, personally I do learn new vocabulary every time I visit the doctor, since I also don't use medical terminology in daily life, but I do usually communicate in Italian. Many people speak English here, or at least learned it in school, especially in the younger generations. However, it shouldn't be taken for granted that they will have. But there are many doctors to choose from, and many different options for care as I mentioned in my video, so you can always look around to find the best fit for you. I would suggest doing some research ahead of time, especially if there are specific concerns you have to see the care available. Expat groups on Facebook for different cities/areas can be a good place to get some questions answered about what it's like to live in different localities and access to services there. There are also some websites, for example one is miodottore.it - Without having to sign up or anything, you can use their search engine to look for different specialists by the city they are in, and then use the filter "Lingua parlata" to search for doctors who speak English. I hope that's a helpful start!
@rastaph
@rastaph 6 месяцев назад
@@thelemonabroad thank you. That is very helpful. I will definitely do my research. I am still trying to decide on what city to retire to as well. Fortunately, I have some time before I can retire to decide.
@thelemonabroad
@thelemonabroad 6 месяцев назад
Definitely! And I think it will be easier once you've narrowed down a few places that you like related to other factors, like big city or smaller city or town, climate, region, things to do, etc. Once you have some options, then you can compare the different services available. I do understand wanting to have the peace of mind that if you ever needed something, it would be there. Good luck with everything!

@@thelemonabroad I am trying to find a place that is big enough that it is close to a major airport, but small enough that I don't have to get a car. Not that I am against getting car, but I am trying see if I can do it without a car. Also, affordability on a retired fixed income will also be a consideration. Thanks for the website link. That was very helpful and my MacBook's Safari browser was able to translate the site into English to help me navigate through it. Now on to learning Italian and getting my Italian passport by descent. Thanks for all your help.

What if said ancestor was a great-great grandmother born in Italy? I believe it would then fall to my great great great grandfather? How would you obtain documents dating that far back? 😳
@thelemonabroad
@thelemonabroad 6 месяцев назад
Hi! I would definitely check out your local Italian consulate’s website, where they will have an “Italian Citizenship by Descent” page. Here it should explain all the different dates and requirements that are necessary to be eligible for citizenship. Because each situation is unique, that would be the best place to start. I believe you have to apply through an ancestor that emigrated from Italy. However, check the dates against your specific situation, and also remember that there are some exceptional cases being made, particularly in regard to applying via a female ancestor. The consulates (and me, too) recommend to check your eligibility through finding your ancestor who emigrated’s birth certificate and naturalization record (or proof no record exists meaning they never naturalized) before collecting the other documents, which can be expensive and time-consuming. Your local registrars and the anagrafe (registry) offices in Italy should have even historical records.

My mom is the great grand child of an Italian. Can I apply after she's been granted her citizenship? Or can I apply directly as a great-great grandfather?
@thelemonabroad
@thelemonabroad 6 месяцев назад
Hi! If I understand your question correctly…I believe when one family member makes the application for Italian citizenship, and it is recognized, usually only children under the age of 18 would be granted Italian citizenship at the same time under the same application. However, you could inquire to the consulate about submitting your applications together at the same time using the same set of documents. I would always check with your local consulate first to see their procedure about your unique situation.
@Derkgez
@Derkgez 6 месяцев назад
@@thelemonabroad thank you so much for the response! But just to clarify my question....yes, only children under 18 are accepted under the same application. My mom will apply as a great granddaughter. Once she's granted her citizenship, do I (an adult) apply as her son, or do I apply as a great- great grandson?
@thelemonabroad
@thelemonabroad 6 месяцев назад
@@Derkgez Hi! Okay now I understand the question better :) I am honestly not sure how that works, perhaps someone here in the comments has also had a similar experience and could share? I'm curious to know as well! I do believe you should be able to make your applications together though - you would each fill out your own application forms and pay the respective fees, but then at least you could share the same set of documents? The only caveat is that I believe you have to live in the same consular jurisdiction.

My question is about June 14, 1912. I was under the impression that that date was the cut off for immigration date. Meaning, if the ascendant emigrated before this date then the line was broken and if they emigrated after this date, the applicant would only qualify if the ascendant didn’t naturalize. Which is right?
@thelemonabroad
@thelemonabroad 7 месяцев назад
Hi! My understanding of the 1912 date is not about emigration, but about naturalization. According to what I found online, before 1912, naturalization of an Italian citizen in a foreign country meant the loss of Italian citizenship for him, his wife, and his minor children. After that date, if an Italian citizen naturalized in a foreign country, Italian citizenship could still be passed on by blood, but only to children who were born before their parent naturalized in a foreign country. Children who were born after the naturalization were not considered citizens by descent, which is why in some families the older children are eligible to claim Italian citizenship, while their younger siblings who were born after their parents naturalized are not. This was the law until 1992, when Italians no longer lost citizenship due to obtaining a foreign citizenship. That is my very oversimplified understanding of it. However, there are many resources online that try to explain it, and if this applies to your situation, I would definitely investigate further!
