I waited over 20 years to get into breeding ball Pythons. Drives me nuts seeing people buying animals that they impulse buy. When I sell I want to see a video of the person with the enclosure

This is a topic that never gets old. Everyone needs to watch this video, and maybe rewatch every year or so just as a reminder of just how much of a commitment animals can be. I think there have only ever been 2 scenarios where I impulsively got animals. 1 was my beardie. A friend knew of someone looking to rehome their son's beardie that he basically abandoned to his mom and she didn't want to have to care for it anymore. I wasn't ever interested in owning a bearded dragon, but when I saw the condition of the enclosure, I knew he needed to get out of that situation. So my original plan was to get the beardie, revamp the enclosure with proper husbandry, and take him to the reptile expo I was volunteering at for USARK and find a responsible owner who was looking for a beardie and could get him and the enclosure for a deal. But... then I fell in love and decided to keep him. 😅 The other time was NARBC USARK auctions. Idk why, but I decided I was going to fight someone to win a Chinese Beauty Snake in the silent auction without any prior knowledge of the species. But it worked out because Beni is one of my favorite snakes to handle. He's got a great temperament and the husbandry is relatively easy. I also impulsively got a pair of ball pythons in the silent auction too. Spent a little more than I wanted to. But it adds to my future breeding projects with axanthic stuff.

Ooooo. That is an interesting looking banana. We've got a clutch h of bananas hatching right now. Keeper for sure I bet. Would be interesting to see what happens when you pair him to different things. I personally would breed him back to a female banana, and also breed him out to a normal. See what happens if you hit a super banana version of this guy. And then with a normal, maybe his mom, and pick apart and separate the genes.

The bashing has been going on for eons. It's not just reptiles. It's horses, and dogs, and even human children. People look down on anything that is different from how they do something. But there's more than 1 way to skin a cat, there's more than 1 way to train a dog, there's more than 1 way to break a horse, there's more than 1 way to raise a kid, more than 1 way to keep a specific reptile species. Unfortunately there will always be bad apples in any group.

I breed rats, and no breeder that I know would breed from any rat that had a neurological issue, let alone breed for a coat pattern that came with a known issue! The podcast “Animals At Home” has had lots of folks talk about regretting not holding back animals. (But, it is the fact that breeders need to sell animals & need that money to pay their bills.) I personally think ALL of those snakes you showed should be held back… they are very distinct.

Sorry to hear about your losses. It definitely happens. In our first clutch of ball pythons for the year we had a baby fathered from a crazy genetic packed snake. We just call him "Mr. Plus Plus Plus". He's an 8-ball pied, het sandblast, poss super sandblast. Het pastel, poss super pastel. Het Mystic. And I think he had 1 more het or poss het. Bit anyway, he is a completely snow white snake with black eyes, red pupils, and 3 individual black scales. He was paired to just a dbl het albino pied. Got a sandblast pied, a Pastel sandblast pied, a mystic, an OD YB pied (dual sire), and "Whitey." Only male in the clutch like his father. Completely white with dark eyes and red pupils. Unfortunately he was a failure to thrive, and I was really bummed about it. Another clutch we had 5 eggs. 2 went bad in the last week of incubation, and when I opened them up they were bamboos. We did get a banger of a pastel bamboo with a ringer. But other 2 snakes that hatched were a pastel and a gravel. (Pairing was Pastel Highway to Bamboo). So really bummed on that clutch. But it just comes with breeding. I'm very grateful that my first ever bullsnake clutch hatched out all 8 eggs being healthy beautiful babies. But being my first year with bulls, I didn't know that laying eggs takes A LOT out of the females. They look terrible afterwards. And you have to slowly bump them back up with small meals or they just end up regurgitating. Lost the female to my 2nd bull clutch because I tried to beef her back up. My first girl is starting to coke back. I just hope she does NOT double clutch, because that would take even more out of her, and then I'd be in trouble.
