To me Savall is for early music what Furtwangler is for the classical and romantic Germanic repertoire: the gold standard for expressiveness and intelligent attention to detail, unfailingly compelling.

Unfortunately this isn't true. The recording was made in 1999. If you search for "BBC Masterworks Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis at Gloucester Cathedral" this is a documentary about this recording. The final credits show the date in Latin numerals: MCMXCIX. That's 1999.

I think this is the best performance of this superb piece on You Tube. The solo singers are wonderful, especially the baritone, and I love the driving tempo at the end. A phenomenal performance of a masterpiece by the greatest musician that has ever lived.
Tenho LP desse Oratório desde meus doze ou treze anos, por aí (no final ano completo 75), comprado sem recomendação nem indicação de ninguém. Meu irmão, um ano mais novo que eu, já falecido, foi cúmplice da façanha, que aconteceu em São João del-Rei,MG, Brasil. A loja acabou-se, a família musicista, dona da dita loja, não sei se ainda vive. O LP deve estar na casa de minha Mãe, que também já partiu. O mundo está pior, o Brasil "avacalhou-se"!. My go to performance for this piece is the Bernstein with Tourel in the Mezzo, although Betty Allen was terrific as well. I recall being impressed with Madame Allen's live performance in the late 60's. Rest In Peace all...Bernstein...Tourel...and Allen.
