We do, by brute force! The lifting machine you might have seen in the videos is more of a hindrance than a help given the space restrictions. We do it the old fashioned way!
Since I’ve never worked in a tavern or pub, I would be interested in knowing about how those vacuum (?) pans under the traditional ale taps work and what they do. Do they “recycle” the ale back out the pump?
Yes, they are called 'auto-vacs' and are popular in this part of the country. Spillage goes into the tray and is recycled back through in the next pull of the pump. I should explain this a bit more in a video some time.

Hand spikes aren't really that difficult to use, really depends on how much love the C&RT can afford to gove each paddle. In reality rhat means every other one is really stiff and hard to move, that is regardless of whether you need a spike or windlass to wind them. Great video, interesting on so many levels.

Didn't realise "Goose Eye" brewery still existed? Use to enjoy one of their beers called "Old Three Laps" I think, back in the early eighties in Lincoln. As a Hertfordshire bloke, I think use of a sparkler is generally for the better. Unless it's one of these cloudy beers?
Hi James. Would I be right in thinking burton ale is the same recipie as double diamond which I drank as a teenager 55 years ago before emmigrating to Oz. Love the pub videos.
Ooh, doubt it, but I'm not sure. DD was one of those bad 70s keg beers wasn't it? (before my time). But Burton beer and recipes isn't my strong point sorry....
My sister lives in Leeds, I'll definately make sure to stop by for a pint the next time I'm up. I'm from a town just outside of Reading, we still have the odd pub like this but unfortunately a lot of them are chains now and more aimed towards selling food and VERY expensive pints haha. Absolutely love the vibe of the Big 6, looking forward to it!
