Firstsite Gallery congratulation on your channel. I admire your commentary on Jamaica cusines. I hardly hear you talk about foods brought from Africa.. Ackees, Junk Yams, plantains, rice, Bissy or Kolanut, and a host of other foods and things. The drum, motar, calabash, stirring stick, Kota etc. Keep Up The Good Work. Blessings.

The Spanish started slavery in Jamaica. Ask the Maroons, who were the descendants of the slaves brought by Spain. All the islands did not do jerk chicken. Jerking is a uniquely Jamaican method of seasoning and preparing food. Jamaican jerk has spread throughout the Caribbean, just as our patties. We also have our own roti, if your not familiar with it, there are videos on youtube showing you how to prepare it.

I saw this exhibition in Colchester and, like Julia Jowers, I was "blown away". Not a phrase I'm fond of, but it really did make a massive impact on me, and on my wife too. We were there for about 3 hours one day, and then went back for another 3 hours next day. If the exhibition comes to where you live, try and see it. For me, it was the best art show I've seen since the Caravaggio exhibition in Rome about 10 years ago.

I notice you talk about every thing other ethic group have done but you don’t mention anything about Africa food that to this day is still a staple in Africa ! Thank you for this, but there are preferences in term of how many of us cook our curried chicken. For a start, I've never seen my parents put sugar in the rice and peas or beans. We also need to stop putting salt in everything. Apart from that,it was really interesting to see you guys bring the Caribbean kitchen to the world. However, that was only one of the many ways to cook curried chicken. Many thanks 💕

I don't believe Ackee was brought over by Africans. I'd love to travel around the other islands like The Philippines to see if they have it. Ghanaians don't eat Ackee. The average Ghanaian has never tried Ackee. Why would our ancestors bring big seeds that they never used? The entire thing makes no sense lol.

Thank you for the information. Africans think they are responsible for all of our culture when the African was beaten out of us and we became new people. Caribbean culture is a mix of many cultures which became one as we Jamaicans say OUT OF MANY, ONE PEOPLE!

Jamaicans are Africans hence why national dish Ackee is native to Ghana it was brought to Jamaica via slavery.

@@friendlyguy40 Jamaicans are Caribbeans* and ackee is from Jamaica. Ghanaians don't eat ackee so why on earth would we bring it on the ship😂 Let's use common sense here. Ackee grows in every Caribbean island and South America and we're the only ones who eat it so you're wrong. I'll pick logic over made up history that was written by the wm.

@@ShammyM. with all due respect friend the white man enslaved and abused enslaved Africans in Jamaica. The scientists have shown that Ackee is native Ghana. The same scientists that show in DNA test that Jamaicans are predominantly west and Central African. And if you say you don’t believe in dna test then do you believe in it when people take them to find out if father is biological ect. Saying Jamaicans not African is basically taking the same title a white man gave you. The white man gave many Jamaicans there surnames as a form of ownership. Even the language you speak apart from the west African words in Patios like UNU ect is the white mans language. The Maroons managed to keep some Akan culture so much respect to them. But any Jamaican saying there not African one could argue they are saying they are happy to be the white man’s servant. The legend Marcus Garvey spoke about loving your African roots. Anyway much respect to you, I hope you do not take offence to what I wrote. I love my black African brother in Jamaica, we are one African family. Anyways I wish you all the best have a great day

our food is more african than anything else. rice is not native to europe and our rice and peas is literally ghanaian waakye. our dumpling is nigerian puff puff, etc. the fish dish is made congolese style and dukunu in jamaica is the same in ghana. Its sad always trying to liken us to europeans when we are african and speaks to how much colonialism we have to unpack
@slimthickaz.
@slimthickaz. 2 года назад
Rice n Peas is NOT waakyee you're delusional. Coconut, scallion, thyme, scotch bonnet pepper all grow in Ghana yet Ghanaians couldn't think of mixing those ingredients together first? Waakyee is brown leaves with baking soda and salt. That's nothing on like Rice n Peas. Fry dumpin is not puff puff or bofolf. Fry dumpin is not sweet or a desert the other two are. Escovitch fish is not from Africa as well that was introduced by the Spanish. After 400+ years we are NOT African anymore. We are Caribbean and all Caribbean people are mixed with something which is why we look so different from Africans.
