Nice to check in with you, Dan. I like the glasses. Which reminds me, I need an eye test. Although a common record, 'A New Perspective' by Donald Byrd (on Blue Note) was surprisingly not reissued much. The Universal Music 2015 US pressing is poor. Perhaps it should be considered for the Tone Poet series. Of the Wes Montgomery I've heard, 'Full House' is by far the best. His Verve recordings were hardly majestic.

Speaking of Freddie Redd , came across Shades of Redd with Jackie McLean , Tina Brooks ,Paul Chambers and Louis Hayes , stellar lineup . Noticed your tuxedo cat make an appearance in this video. Oh I forgot to ask, there is an unissued Sonny Clarke album with an allocated number in the 1500 series. Does that correspond to an actual shelved session we know about?? If so, that would surely be a great TP! May have already been issued as “My Conception”, perhaps, which is awesome.btw!!

I would love to see Lee Morgan’s “Live at the Lighthouse” in either the original 2 disk format OR perhaps the original plus one or two extra disks of extras. I know the 12 disk boxset was issued 3-4 years ago, but it is expensive and hard to find as it sold very quickly. Also Bennie Green’s “Soul Stirrin’” is fantastic and should be reissued. I think “Blackjack” from Donald Byrd is an A title that is hard to find. Agree with the Harold Land session which I have on a Japanese pressing. Disagree with Stanley Turrentine, not because I don’t love him - but for now a lot of his sessions have been recently reissued. At least for now. Love the Jim Hall “Good Friday Blues” from Pacific Jazz. ALL Grant Green needs to be reissued. “Gooden’s Corner” for sure. Also all 1500 series and titles through 1962-1963 should be in mono - prime example is Kenny Burrell’s, “Midnight Blue” has harsh panning. Dan, I agree that prior Music Matter issuance should have absolutely nothing to do with title choice. If Joe continues to insist on this then Joe should go - these titles are owned by Blue Note, not Joe and are national treasures. Period. Music Matters were small issuances and the price gouging is a disgrace and goes against Don Was’ egalitarian approach. I don’t get it. All this said - I commend Don Was for the Detroit series and the Grant Green “Mozambique” show in particular. Sorry for the long commentary.

"Africaine" would be a great Tone Poet. They released it in 2018 along with "Patterns" as part of a Blue Note Review boxed set called Spirit & Time. It's a tribute to jazz drummers. It's got some really great music including a 2 record album of contemporary drummers playing Tony Williams songs. I'm a drummer so I'll have to try to find that Hampton, Tatum & Rich trio album. Sonic Boom could be a cool Tone Poet. I just picked up the cd from the library and it's what's spinning in the office today. Keep on truckin'.

I dont understand..You think that the corproations are ONLY on the left? You are very sadly disillusioned.. At least the LEFT regulates these greedy fucks.. Until you understand the right questions you can never find the answers, the worlds wealth and corruption just as always lies in the hands of the rich. Tax breaks for corps and deregualting them to make more money does NOT swerve the peoples interest... The smoke of immigration and abortions are sad illusions to scare fools into voting against their own interests... But ..whatever... a narcissistic dictator sounds appealing to you, ... you get what you deserve. On a global scale... corporations are the rulers of the worlds wealth... and they HATE governement... Siding with them under a right wing agenda is freedom only for them .... not lie I can change any ones minds... study some world history and geo politics and then think for yourself who is in charge and , who serves the people better... Too be clear BOTH sides are corporate shills.. one just serves the people better.. Again look around this world,.... not that AMericans KNOW how to do that.. strong left leaning countries in Europe that have enough sovereignty to avoid corporate meddling are the strongest happiest nations on Earth...

i get that.... but it is what it is... Nationalism is an antiquated thought process.. Thinking for ones self and understanding HOW THINGS SHOULD BE, is a worthwhile endeavor... I can communicate about this stuff with people from most any place int he world...common sense prevails America is so indoctrinated and opinionated yet has become so insular, that they lack understanding of how fucked up our politics are... We are artificially divided ... and thus controlled.. Take what I say or dismiss it.. its a free form discussion not some scripted speech... To support your arguments I’d like to offer an example of a not the best choice for no.1 Jazz vocalist: Ella Fitzgerald. Yes she can sing nearly anything and swing the heck out of it. There’s just one problem: everything she sings come out light and smiley and fun. For me she is always missing some emotional depth and connection. There’s a reason one of her most well known songs is “A Tisket, A Tasket” . None of this changes the fact that she is one of my favorite vocalists, but there are others that can sing circles around her and better deserve that no.1 spot. So I think when we answer question of the best whatever, we tend to say what we like rather than actually evaluating comparing and ranking which is actually what the answer to this question should be.

You hit my hot button again this week with MJQ. Originally the group was part of Dizzy Gillespie's big band and in the beginning was Klook, Ray Brown, Bags and John Lewis. The full band played so fast and loud and took long solos etc. that they needed someone to spell them. Hence the quartet, which became very popular as an intermission act. When the full band broke up the quartet kept going. A couple of years into it, Percy Heath replaced Brown and Connie Kay replaced Kenny Clark. The group became the longest running jazz ensemble of all time. They also played to more live audience attendees than any other performers ever. If you listen to any of their recordings you will hear that they never played the same tune that same way twice and in their own understated way they always swung like crazy.

In the 70’s we were told we were facing an imminent oil shortage, turns out we have 400 years of oil, we were also told there would be worldwide famine in the immediate future, when was the last time there was a concert for Bangladesh? Now we are told by our leaders in the space of approximately 100 years, two countries, England and America, through factories and cars put this planet in jeopardy, this doesn’t even pass the smell test. For this climate change idea to pass from theory to generally understood acceptance would be to ; one, have a unanimous consensus from all scientists not just the ones relying on government funding and two show us something more than computer models guessing at the past and future events.
