Seems that IO is too inflexible for lots of ev owners. Cant set charge times, cant easily handle more than 1 ev. Lots of people including me not keen to change from Octopus Go tariff and dumb charger.

Thanks for your comment. IO certainly isn't for everyone and Go is still a great option. Although, the point of IO is that you don't need to set a charge time - Octopus handles the charge scheduling for you and will only charge you their off-peak rate if you do so. I have two EVs and get on just fine with IO. But appreciate there might not be enough of an incentive for you to switch and if you're happy with Go, then that's super! Editor - Danny

It doesn't lock the cable plug into the socket! Even when it's live and charging the car, anyone can walk up to the unit, pull out the cable and drop the plug into a puddle. When you return to your car, it hasn't been charged. Podpoint chargers DO lock the cable as soon as the car sends a signal that the cable is locked at the car charging port.

Hi, thanks for the video. I have a slightly different challenge. I have just ordered the Renault Megane, but it will need to be charged at 2 different addresses (with different Octopus energy accounts), mine and my partners. Am I best going for the same charger at each address and then switching devices in the charger's own App, am I best getting different brands and using their own Apps, or can I just schedule the charging through the Renault App and it will recognise each Home Charger independently? If you could recommend a charger/chargers you felt would meet my needs best that would be fantastic too. I am unsure which you offer with installation would be best.

I assume you're referring to Intelligent Octopus for your tariff? If so, the charge scheduling must be done via the Octopus app anyway. If you have two separate properties with two separate tariffs/bills, then that should work in principle. However, I'm not sure if the Octopus app allows you to manage multiple addresses. The best solution might be to use the Octopus app on one smartphone/tablet for one property, and then another device for the other property. In terms of the chargers, your choice will depend on whether your vehicle is directly compatible with Intelligent Octopus or not. Who cares about WiFi? I know the battery is low, I need to charge. What side of the car is the charge port on for most vehicles and what is the most convenient way for me to park. I'm from the USA and this guy is annoying. Simple question and he gives me a sale's job.

UK customers care about WiFi because all charge points sold and installed in the UK must be "smart" and therefore connected to the internet. You might be better watching another video offering free information that is US-based :) Thanks from the annoying guy

Octopus go is in Beta and I really do not recommend it, look on the web it'll take you months to set up and CS are none existent with fixing issues. As for smart home charge you did an excellent job putting in my Tesla wall charger.

very useful video, I have same a Ohme 7.4kW ePod Home EV Charger Type 2 in black, which does not have an electronic display and is very standard. I have been using it for the last six months, and I didn't set up Timber, just charged manually. However, for the last few days, there has been a problem. Sometimes it turns on, and after a few seconds, it shuts down. The lighting display also shows different colors than it used to. I need to know if this is an issue with the EV Charger or the consumer unit supplying the electricity.

Thanks for watching. If you have an issue with your ePod, you'll need to contact the original installer to investigate this for you. They'll either be able to sort it directly or liaise with Ohme on your behalf.

Go is definitely a great option right now, especially as the prices are the same (currently) as Intelligent Octopus. I personally find Intelligent perfectly easy to use, but the other thing going for it is Octopus will maintain the off peak rate if they decide to charge your car during peak hours, which is a nice perk. Well spotted. I'm not sure when that changed exactly, but to be honest this video has been a bit of pig to make at times due to the regular changes suppliers make. We delayed it at least three times due to needing to make updates but of course this would be never ending so we decided to hit the publish button. Shame we missed the Octopus Go change though!

Fantastically succinct. Great information. Thank you. Just to mention some households with an existing electricity smart meter from a particular company may be restricted to the tarriff available to them. I have an Eon smart meter and Sync EV charger which meant I wasn’t eligible for an Octopus intelligent tariff. However was perfectly fine with Eon Drive v3 tariff giving me the slightly cheaper but less flexible price of 6.9p/kWh including VAT from 12am -7am. One should be mindful of standing charge and the day time rate when choosing a tarrif if your EV home charging mileage is low and daytime home usage is high the night time charge saving could be undone by the high standing charge and/or higher daytime rate. I’ve been contacted by Tomato Energy recently offering great standing charges and even more competitive night time tariff! Anyone familiar with them?

We had an Ohme epod fitted as a replacement for a BP pulse unit (utterly junk) It's utterly reliable & just works. The main reason for choosing it is the lack of a wifi connection, stops all issues with signal dropout.

It depends which tariff you want to use. If you're on a "normal" tariff then any EV charger will work fine. However, if you want to use something like Intelligent Octopus then you'll need a compatible vehicle or charge point. @@exwhyz33 It depends if your vehicle is compatible with that tariff or not. I'd highly recommend using our tool and inputting your vehicle as the best starting point. If you ever decide to switch to Intelligent Octopus in future, you will need a compatible set up - either via a compatible vehicle or charge point.

My real world experience is massively different from this review. The app is glitchy as hell. It thinks it’s doing a max charge - when the car is not even plugged in! Rebooted by switching off mains, restart app, delete and reinstall app - but it still thinks it’s doing a max charge and there is no way to cancel this phantom charge. If I try to lock the charger buttons via the app, it tells me it’s ‘not possible to adjust solar settings while plugged in’. Right - but I’m not adjusting solar settings, it’s not plugged in and I don’t have solar (and solar is switched off in the app). Likewise I try to select ‘approve each plug-in’ - and it gives me the same useless response about solar - and just does not work. In my experience, this review is very wide of the mark and my real world advice is to find a charger by another manufacturer.

Thanks David for sharing your experience. We've installed 100s of these units and haven't had anyone come back with these issues, so I suspect yours is a rare (but very annoying for you!) experience. We have had customers with some software issues, of course, just not as extreme as the ones you've described. You should contact Ohme about this if you haven't already.

Mine worked 100% for a year or so and then started to play up….. and slowly got worse and worse until we couldn’t reply on it at all. Customer service is shockingly bad and consists of just telling you to reset and update the machine every time. Takes three days usually to hear anything from them. Have now binned it and bought another brand.

Hello Stuart - with the Ohme charge point and app, you cannot set a "start" or "finish" time. As mentioned in the video, the Ohme works a little different to other chargers in that you set a target charge percentage and target time. The Ohme then does the rest. The best way to ensure it only charges during your off peak is to set a price limit. You should be able to find this in settings, where you can tell the Ohme to not charge over a certain price per kWh. Input your off-peak electricity price here, and that should restrict charging to that off peak window. If you're struggling, I'd recommend contacting Ohme direct. Danny - Editor

I own this charger and for Teslas, it is superb for Teslas. I am not sure what in the hell you are talking about when you say the "piddly cable storage stops this wall connector from getting a perfect score." It is a thick 24-foot-long cable. What would you suggest that Tesla do to store a long, thick electrical cable? EVERY other home wall charger I have seen stores cables the same way or in worse ways. Your criticisms are absurd. Sure, Tesla could put a retractable cable mechanism on their units, but it would be a pain in the ass to use, and it would greatly increase the cost.

I moved into a house with an elvi and im trying to get it working. I have this app, i can connect via Bluetooth and the charger shows up but theres no option to connect to the wifi. Any ideas why? Thanks.

This charger is amazing - working alongside Intelligent Octopus Go with my Kona EV. I get 7.5p/kWh at any time of day as Octopus communicates the ideal charge times. The app also integrates with my Kona via the API, so it can see the battery status, preheat/cool the car etc. 10/10

Tesla wall connector gen 3 not charge my Fiat 500e car I can't use the same wall that I use for the Tesla...it hooks up for a few minutes, green light, and then comes off after 1-2 minutes. I tried both modes 3 and 2 set by Uconnect, but the same...these are the current values ​​from the WCT app: L1 to N: 228.4V from L1 to Ground: 228.5V From N to Ground: 1.6v Software version 24.4.1 WallBox Gen.3 version Always the same: Green LED on the 500e for 1 minute, then it turns red and the message 'have the charging system checked' appears on the dashboard. Of course, if I charge the Model Y, it works as usual. Anyone had the same problem as me?

Just got one of these. REALLY shocked to see you cant add more than 1 car. that's appalling. The solution from OHME support is "press switch car and feed it all your credentials" for the other manufacturer (every time). Really really short sighted and makes the charger pretty limited in its usecases.

It's been great so far in April 2024, 1.79p/kWh for the car and 10p/kWh for the house. Absolutely agree with everything said in this vid tho, in the long term will take a view on saving vs hassle.

Great video but i agree that you need a battery that has a high cost and limited life span to replace in next 10 years (at another cost) and if you go further to solar panels then again another cost and a year on year derating return from them as their power drops over 15 years (Replace and another cost). I guess we have to do the Sums 6k power vault system and 8k Solar array (if house cam hold them). So at cheapest you pay a upfront cost of 14 to 15K.. Then have to replace it in 10 to 15 years (Maybe a bit longer) Is it worth the loans and and savings spent now for this or wait till it stream lined. What could you do now in this money crisis with 15k now verses worrying about a place where you are living in which in next 15 to 20 years you will move from and start the cycle again? New homes and people moving to last retirement homes makes sense to me. Heat pumps in anything but a new build insulated home makes no sense to me (heat pumps use electricality to work and in colder months they pull on that hard to work for a lower average temp plus the 4 to 15k to install) . Investment verses return depending on circumstances, family, age, renting, if moving in next 3 o 5 years and so may factors. What happened to green hydrogen production and usage? Natural renewable energy changing water in to Hydrogen fuel and when burnt is carbon neutral and emits only water? Low effort and cost to change for all cars, boilers and power stations to use and produce only water vapour from sea water? Seems a big drive to go eclectic to me that had not been well thought out. suspect some of the big companies may want the quicker profits now than then the longer term global change. I am a very big advocate for green energy but building a 10,000 of them off shore (with a great government tax incentive to the companies but high sea / land licence / Royally tax charges) and limited infrastructure to be able to distribute that energy is a issue as it can only go locally. They turn them off because the grid infra can not handle them and we have to pay for their down time at a standard production rate. Brexit and rising tax and prices are seeing the dirty and green energy companies all backing away from investment and actively stopping investment. Electric power UK wide infra has to be increased for these to work or will only supply local demand, Other systems like water pumped up to high land and dropping as hydro power needs to be looked at to take out peek coal fired power stations. All the new north sea oil and gas projects are now being given the go ahead like the Bentley oil fields and new Nuclear rushed plants as there is a realisation after 25 years warning that we need all utilities infra focus (Maybe halted with new government depending on which comes in). (But private companies now own them want profits not wasting on investment unless for profit - New power station is investment is not an immediate profit or requirement for them) Sadly my view for now is we do need immediate nuclear and new gas and oil field nationally owned with refineries to become energy / utilities efficient until we can solve this Green energy blockage on distribution and high licence tax for the plots. Though a long game is being played here with how the energy companies need to keep making money (And out pensions ae linked to it too these also and so change will be slow as no one wants to be poor in retirement). Did you now that we only have one gas and oil refinery in the UK in Scotland and it is set to close as can not compete and refine the oil and gas too make a profit and so everything gets shipped to other countries to refine. Zero benefit to UK bills from UK of shore gas and oil apart from the licensing and tax per barrel (Mind you they are private companies and so not working in UK interest but theirs and share holders.... If it was you how where would you spend your money right now... Bit more seeing where the Gov and people want to go but all are stuck with oil and gas for now and decommissioned power stations now and upcoming. No one will wake tomorrow and be fine with no power or heating (Though many of us just turn it off till necessary to cook or heat but that lovely standing charge raise (that did not drop) makes sure they continue the profit as people suffer with cutting back). But its great going green and seeing the benefits if you have the money to spent on a green electric car, solar panels, Battery Storage, Fuse board upgrade, Electric heat pumps and install the installation to keep warm running in all day at its lower output temperature to keep it constant (And spend more on electric when in cold weather when it needs to boost the heat).

There's no mention of the fact the connection is cellular only, and that's only supported for three years. There's no indication of what they'll then start charging.

Yes, that is a valid point. It is made clear on our website, but something we should have mentioned here. On the topic of data charges, Ohme's stance is three years of free data and after that they reserve the right to charge, but so far they haven't charged customers for data - and there are plenty of Ohme chargers out there older than three years. Of course, we can't guarantee the app or data will stay free forever and nor does Ohme, but our understanding is they have no intention of charging for data. If they did, I believe they are quoted as saying about £2 per month. Hope that helps. Danny - editor.

No, not necessarily. Many EVs come with a charging cable as standard so most drivers use that. In cases, where an EV does not come with the cable then you would need to factor in the cost of a cable purchase - but we recommend drivers purchase a cable for use with public chargers anyway even if their charger has one attached. So either the car comes with one and you won't need to purchase a cable separately, or it doesn't and so you'd probably want to get a cable anyway.

Unfortunately with the Ohme you cannot set a start time or finish time. There is a setting, however, that allows you to set a price cap - in other words, the Ohme won't charge over the price of your off-peak window. You should be able to find this in the settings menu, but if you have trouble it's best to contact Ohme's support team.

Hi I have a mg es long range ev Prior to delivery I had a wallbox pulsar plus installed by a local Electrician,This was nearly 2 years ago in the UK In general the best it could be described as is eratic but recently it has become impossible Wallbox introduced a delay to prevent charging at what they consider inappropriate times. If you want to override this you Have to use there app Unfortunately you are the relying on the car communicating with the wallbox and vica versa which in my case it does not and hence does not charge On my app I received an update and on first use i was asked to scan the charger The app stated that this charger was alreaddy linked to an account Firstly I contacted them by email waited 2 days and nothing I then contacted them by phone twice.They had me download the app and reinstall that got me off the phone the second time i was told that the charger was linked to another account and would need proof that it was mine. The fact that it has been stuck on the side of my house for nearly 2 years certainly does not cut it with them. The security on these boxes is excessive to the degree that they become unusable for what essentially is a 7kW wall plug clearly safety is important. these boxes are not actually chargers the charger is in the car and all modern cars can be programmed, hence the need for them to be smart is irrelevant The fact that they are smart means that the regulator can introduce restrictions on these boxes ie half hour delay also the ability to turn off ev wallboxes when required. Currently it is far cheaper to buy electricity for a car through a wall box making it less attractive for the fuel stations to provide for EVs also as more people use EVs the tax on fuel income will be less. The government has made it illegal to install a dumb charger insisting it is for security(can you imagin 1000s of terrorists in little white vans travelling the country attacking our charges)As for power surges if we all use the chargers in our cars it would be far more random than who ever pulls the strings on our wall boxes. One of the biggest surges occurred on Wednesday, 4 July 1990 Electricity demand: 2,800MW - equivalent to 1,120,000 kettles Surely we have come on since then and our power companies can organise themselves better rather than as usual demonize their customers sit on there hands and take the money just like the water companies. So EVs pay lower road tax effectively no fuel tax how will they raise taxation and help the oil companies make money supplying EVs with fuel Yes you have got it combine home smart meter to smart EV charger and you can Tax the electricity used in our EVs and if you are a bit naughty they can turn you off BIG BROTHER is here (hang on to your granny cable they have already started to demonize them on safety grounds)they will probably make them illegal soon) My wallbox is finally working again I found the receipt from my initial purchase and emailed it to them and within seconds they cleared the box allowing me to reinstall the app while customer services were very pleasant and patient they stick rigidly to the law and will not clear your box of an inaccessible account without proof of purchase. Without a receipt they will contact the dead email address (2 day min wait) while you send in pictures of the wall box that must show serial numbers. LESSON Be very wary when changing your phone or/and your email address You wont know you have a problem until you get a update and you need to rescan the wall box The LAW is an Ass even Sir Humphrey Appleton couldnt come up with this one and the minister would not understand the problem. Another point while I'm here the 5 hours at night are cheaper, but the other 19 hours are more expensive than the standard rate Hence you must do your sums

Hi Danny, I’ve recently bought an IX1 and a Wallbox charging point (compatible with octopus, for now at least) and I’m trying to wrap my head around the charging. If I use my BMW or Wallbox app to set a timer (i.e 23:30-05:30) will this override the octopus app and charge during these times at the lower rate? Also, the octopus app mentions only having one car added as a device, if I am to get another car would I be able to use the Wallbox app and still claim the lower tariff?

If you're on the Intelligent Octopus tariff, then ideally you'll use the Octopus app for all your scheduling and not use the car or Wallbox app for this. The main benefit of this, other than Octopus taking care of the charging schedule, is IF Octopus decided to charge your car outside the normal off-peak window then it will apply the off-peak rates. Aside from that, however you decide to carry out the scheduling, any charging completed during the standard off-peak window will be charged at the off-peak rates. And this is how you're able to use two EVs. We have a Tesla which we charge via the Octopus app and let them handle it all - but we also charge our Nissan Leaf (which isn't compatible without specific chargers) using the in-car schedule and just set this to be during the off-peak rates. Works fine!

@@SmartHomeCharge I also have an iX1 and a BP Pulse charger (bought through BMW two years ago). Intelligent Go just assigns random times over night but will never charge to full. You are supposed to tell the iX1 to charge immediately and let Octopus do the rest. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work properly, so I’ve gone back to manually setting the charge from 23:30 to 05:30 Octopus are supposed to be looking into it, but the BMW forums are full of i drivers for whom Intelligent Go doesn’t work.

Untethered is my choice, damage a tethered cable or plug and a trician is needed, same issue on untethered, go buy another cable on overnight. Just need the correct cable spec for you’re particular charger “rate” 😊

So what happens if i plug in at 7pm with 10% and set it be at 90% by 7am. Lets say that means 8 hours of charging at 7kw, will it charge at peak rates as well, or will it just use whatever cheap rates it can and then present me at 7am with say 70%? Because I i would rather it charged only at the cheap rate even if it means i have only 70%. However as the cheap rates can vary, why should i limit myself to 70% when it might be able to charge more for at off-peak rates

I think we cover this in the video, but essentially it depends on whether there's enough off-peak hours to achieve your target or not. Octopus will prioritise reaching your target by the set time - if it can achieve all of that within the off-peak hours, it will, but if it needs to charge constantly through the off-peak and peak rates to achieve your target, then that's what it will do. Essentially, if you set a target of 90% etc, it's assuming that's your priority.

​@@yitzele As long as you use the Smart Charging option i.e. let Octopus control the charging and not use the Bump Charge, then they should apply the off-peak rates only.

@@yitzele To be honest, Octopus' own website isn't 100% clear on this. I'd be tempted to check with them directly, but as an IO user myself I've never been charged peak rates unless I've selected the Bump Charge option to charge now (in the evening for example).

I have an Ohme charger and it's been giving me lots of trouble. And now that Ohme said the log charger (installed less than 9 months ago) shows somew faults, they want me to pay for the replacement. I had it connected it to the car and to the Agile Octopus tariff and saw that it often ignores it and charges the battery to 100% at whatever price. A reboot fixes it, but when I contacted Ohme, they tend to blaming it on the mobile network and on the car manufacturer API. The same mobile network works for the car app and how could an API issue result in the Ohme app showing different battery charge levels on different tabs at the same time? My verdict: Unreliable

I had an ohme charger installed by a certified electrician who registered it, I live near London, so the mobile network is great and trying to use Octopus Agile tariff. It malfunctions, causes a lot of stress and with any faulty software, a reboot of the charger fixes it. But ohme did not even think of handling this, could be as simple as rebooting and notifying them. So to say the least, I cannot recommend this charger.
