For 20 years. I wrote/arranged/recorded/produced original songs in a home studio setting. Tascam Portastudios were my exclusive means of generating finished material. - 1995 thru 2000 - 424 Portastudio (4 track analog cassette deck) - 2001 thru 2005 - 788 Portastudio w. separate burner (8 track digital deck) - 2006 thru 2015 - 2488 Portastudio w. on-board burner (24 track digital deck) No pitch correction, looping, sampling, VSTs, MIDI, harmonizers or vocal chains.
I'll kick the channel off with 3 songs (1 per primary playlist) & add a new one each week. All comments/questions are welcome.
Playlist photos depict the exact version of portastudio used. Song-specific details are listed in the liner notes of most videos. *Channel photo compliments of pexels.com
Just an FYI, when doing a short. It either has to be a 1:1 video (box) or a phone style video, like you are holding your phone as you normally do. This is just considered a standard video even though the tagged it as a short. Sounded good BTW.
Much appreciated Mike 👍I'll remove #short from the video title lines... change it to "short". I was aware of RU-vid's preference for other formats, but my options are somewhat limited. By choice, I'm NOT a smartphone user. As far as the 1:1 format is concerned, very few are listed RU-vid search results. In a search I just performed, there was only ONE box-style vid listed in the first 200 search results. It's obvious that phonestyle is the preferred format.😉To make this even more confusing, according to the Gods of Google, "RU-vid will automatically catagorize any RU-vid content 60 seconds or less as a Short". Regardless, I am going to remove the hashtag designation from my titles. I appreciate both your comment & your intent.
@@20YearsofTascam-rc1he Depending on the software that you are using the edit our videos, you can generally change the video settings. I use VideoStudio by Corel and I can change the video size in there. Shorts are great, you get a lot of views with them. If you are over the 1000 subs mark, you don't make a lot of money on them though. My one short got over 400 views on the first day and I made $0.08. Keep doing what you are doing!
FYI decided to try something new Mike...bit of an experiment. Adobe offers some free conversion software, so I registered, tried it out & uploaded my first 9:16 #short. 🙂 Appreciate the idea 👍
Everything you hear was generated externally, including drums. The video liner of the full-version list all the instrument details ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qtJNojfWfNg.htmlfeature=shared
Sounds great. I’ve been thinking about getting the 2488. I presently have tried the Daw route, frustrating to say the least. Advice ? I’m a guitar player.
Thanks 👍 Advice? I wasn't in love with the on-board guitar effects on this unit. If you you don't already own one, you may want to consider a decent pre-amp, Good luck with whatever you decide...apprecite your comments!
@@charleswind8298 Nope 🙁No on-board drums, VSTs, pitch correction, or samples of any kind. They ARE MIDI-capable, but I never set up for it. There is no software assist you with arranging. They are strictly recording-editing-mixing decks. 2488 owner's manual - tascam.com/downloads/tascam/353/2488_manual.pdf
Sorry it took me so long to notice your comment here. Very strange...it didn't show up in my gmail or RU-vid notifications tab. Anyway, YES ...this was recorded & mixed on a Tascam 788 Portastudio (digital 8-track deck).
Not sure, which is why it's not listed. 😉Back then, I owned 2 types of mic...SM57's and an EV RE200 Condenser Microphone. Judging by the crisp sound of this one, it was probably the EV pin mic. Appreciate the comment 👍
Loved working like this back in my younger years; taking my first tentative steps into recording. It's easy to view it now as antiquated but I guarantee it made you a better musician, songwriter and engineer. It's funny because I find myself reverting back to this way of recording, of course with the conveniences of modern equipment, and preferring the time and thinking that needs to go into each new recording. Bravo!
Nicely said... and no doubt it made me better! I also became better at figuring things out for myself. Back then, there was no RU-vid, there were no online boards. When you encountered an obstacle, you referred to manuals, talked to folks who knew more than you did, experimented & figured out a solution. Appreciate your comment 👍
Hehe! Absolutely... As much as I'm misty eyed for the 'good old days..' (whatever that means?! 🤣) you can't beat a DAW and all it's conveniences. @@20YearsofTascam-rc1he
I love the pauses and stops! Really adds some interesting/intricate detail to it. Connect to the words too… I don’t recall hearing this one before. Sorry if I am forgetting. Really enjoyed this! 🙏🎶🎵✨
Thanks 👍Everything you hear is the result of the 788 onboard effects. Guitar, bass & vocal were plugged directly into the deck & recorded dry. All effects were added post-track. In a perfect world, the drums would have a thicker texture & guitars would be a little less grinding, but it-is-what-it-is 😉
Thanks Dave ...I certainly tried 🙄 As for the channel concept, credit goes to the folks who commented on my primary channel. I don't get many, but the comments I do get are mostly on Tascam-related vids. Got me thinking that a theme channel might be a worthwhile project. Thanks again 👍
That's really cool how that organically came to be. Yes I always enjoyed hearing the ones you shared that were Tascam related. Sure thing! Much wishes for success for 2024!@@20YearsofTascam-rc1he
Recording digital used to be like stacking a tower of dominos, nowadays you can choose whether or not to put a lot of care and attention into your tracks but everyone is just gonna assume you're sampling everything anyway.
Yep, you're right! We're quickly becoming a creative culture of "software jockeys" 😉...where PC/Apple-based DAWs, VSTs, sampling, pitch correction & quantization are the norms. BUT, some of us didn't operate that way. Which is why I've included specifics in the liner notes of these videos. Those who prefer to assume, are welcome to do so...those who prefer actual knowledge to generalized assumtions, have readily availble points of reference. Appreciate your comment 👍
@@20YearsofTascam-rc1he this was already retro when I got into music but I used to have one of those 8 tracks, I think it strengthened my ability to make dynamic arrangments without clutter. This is gorgeous, takes me back to like what would be playing at like a church bbq or something coming up lol
Excellent! Mine quit functioning properly early 2006...replaced it with the 2488. While the 2488 did offer some advantages, the onboard effects for the 788 were FAR superior. Appreciate your comment 👍
