Welcome to the Cynical Celluloid horror, cult and exploitation channel. Here you'll find The Nasties Review which is my original series of critical reviews of the DPP 74, the video nasties of the mid 80's and Section 3 which is the supplementary list of the DPP.
Revisiting this review as the American election nears. While I haven't seen The Devils, the themes you discuss are definitely relevant. There's just no way to mask the influence behind certain mandates, e.g. Louisiana being able to pass that bill enforcing that the 10 Commandments be displayed in every public school classroom (kindergarten - twelfth grade, meaning classes of students aged 6 to 17 years old)
Seems like a good film. The Lesbian Sex scenes being a bit indulgent and disconnected doesn't entirely surprise me given the genre and era, but can't really complain too much. I haven't been too exposed to many Erotic thrillers like this, so might give a look someday. Always great to see you still around.
I'm commenting on a 15 year old video, in 2024, to tell you that I really enjoyed this analysis. you touched upon subjects (such as the director's critique of the older Mondo films) that many other more recent videos lack. A lot of youtubers who defend this film don't even go into that aspect- most likely due to a lack of understanding of this history. The history of Mondo films is integral to the analysis. I also really appreciate that you're just as critical of the director for his choices, presenting that sense of duality- he ultimately made an exploitation film that criticizes exploitation films. Most of the negative commentary I've seen only focuses on the animal deaths. But there's a lot more to the unethical nature of this movie. This movie is undeniably racist in it's own critique of racism, and it's baffling (and very telling) that a lot of people don't even consider this. He also seemingly gave zero shits about his actors, especially the non-white actors. And yet, this is probably one of the most effective "found footage" movies that's ever been made. Great job!
The disclaimer at the start promised a generous amount of T&A, which alarmingly failed to materialize. To add insult to injury, the RU-vid report system does not appear to have a 'False Advertising' category. Frustrating!
You miss the point, if atheists don't believe in God and faith, then what do they believe in? Where is the moral compass? Where is the justification the believe of free will? Where is their belief in good and evil without faith and God? Hardly disingenous at all. Funny how athiests like asking questions yet resent it when the questions are asked of them. What drives an atheist to wake up in the morning if there's no reason for him to carry on? What stops them from not going any further? Blatty, a practicing Catholic set things up for purpose. He knew what he was doing. And it works. Good and evil are not founded on a belief in nothing. Get snippy because your position isn't projected back at you should be left to the WOKEs. Man up.
I think that it might be more appropriate to speak of "the emphasis of Reagan(sp?)'s sexuality" as opposed to the "sexualization of Reagan" -- for I feel quite positive that the young woman was sexual before the director chose to draw attention to it.
Great review mate, I love a bit of Larraz. I had no idea this movie was shot abroad! I always thought it was somewhere in the states, so cool. Some great stuff on the movie man about the actors and improvising, cool to learn something about Larraz's process. You've made me want to grab the blu ray to give it another watch lol
Never heard of or saw this one, but it's nice being exposed to Horror movies that you never heard or knew about before. The movie being in the middle ground of being a giallo and a slasher sounds and looks interesting, not to mention diferent enough from what came afterwards. I'm not overly exposed to giallo(I should though), but I do like my slasher films and this looks like something kinda up my alley. Also the mention of Claudio Fragasso got me thinking, I don't think you've covered anything he's directed that I recall or seen from you. Certainly things he's wrote for, but not any of his directing credit. though it is a meme movie, I would be kinda interested in seeing your critique on troll 2 and his other movies like monster dog. Good stuff as always.
I used to rent this a lot as a kid. I watched again about 5 yrs ago. I enjoyed it almost as much as I did as a kid. The way the kills are staged and shot were very impressive. Great review !
At this point I've seen 71 of the 72 Nasties (Boogyman II is the only one I haven't, and I'm not missing anything from what I read). This is certainly the worst of the ghe Nasties for me. My pick for the worst movie I've ever seen. I can count on one hand the # of movies that I watched where I was legit mad at myself for watching something so rotten. This is one of them. That being said, there is NO WAY this should been on the list, because there is nothing offensive here other then it a terrible movie. Wooden acting, even worse dubbing, voiceovers in the middle of a conversation, lousy effects. Thankfully, this is still considered banned, as there is no official UK release since the VHS days (according to Wikipedia)
One of those "so bad its good" films. The scene where the army are using flamethrowers in the city and manage only to blow themselves up was hilarious!!!
The Swarm, the film that makes Sharknado and Killer Bees look like Oscar winners lol. Joking aside I quite enjoy this film not only for Michael Caine's absolutely understated performance but because I m a sucker for cheesy man vs nature films. 😂
I found 'The swarm' to be pretty hilarious, and yes mostly because of Caine's OTT shouting 'We need to keep the Africans out!', and the giant hallucinated bee Katherine Ross sees gave me a giggle too, the playground scene though is genuinely disturbing indicating they had no idea how cheesy the rest of the movie was.
