My RU-vid channel offers practical guidance to support nurses' education and career development, from new starters to senior nurses. I’m passionate about supporting nurses' career progression through education, as I've encountered many challenges during my own career. For example, I failed my nursing finals and had to go through several interviews before I was finally offered a team leader role. I’m sharing everything I’ve learnt over my 35 years as a Registered Nurse and 28 years as a Registered Nurse Tutor. I hope you find my videos useful. Look out for new video uploads on Sundays and let me know if you have any questions or topics you would like me to cover. I wish you every success in your future nursing career! 😊 🍀

Thank you so much for this video, I have a question. Is it advisable for a nurse from overseas to apply for a healthcare support worker role and in the supporting information also indicates that one has a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Does that help at all?
Hi Carol, do you have any tips or advice on how PDNs in your workplace support your internationally educated nurses? How is their role different in anyway to the normal PDN for our domestic nurses? Would you be able to share some information on this please? Many thanks.
Hi yes we have a bridging programme specifically for international nurses where we go through key differences in nursing, such as risk assessments, EPR, national safety standards. We also try to link international nurses to a buddy from their country of origin. Recruitment leads keep an eye and meet them in a welcome meeting then 12 weeks later. Hope that helps.
Hi @jobanjeetsingh8826 The Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) website is best to look for information and updates as they regulate ODPs. See some current information below but it can change so you need to check for updates. Also HCPC do not stipulate you need this level to get on register they leave it with employers so you can check with individual employers. However below is the level they may ask for. 7.2 Communicate in English to the required standard for their profession (equivalent to level 7 of the International English Language Testing System, with no element below 6.5*) *The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) tests competence in the English language. Applicants who have qualified outside of the UK, whose first language is not English and who are not applying through the Swiss Mutual Recognition Route (SMR) must provide evidence that they have reached the necessary standard. More information is available here: Statement on English language proficiency requirements for internationally trained health and care professionals. Link: www.hcpc-uk.org/standards/standards-of-proficiency/operating-department-practitioners/ I hope this helps.
Hi I'm not attending interview for an advanced nurse practitioner role but rather a mental health practitioner role (band 6) however they do expect a degree of specialisation according to the job specification. Do you think focusing on complex comorbidity in mental health might be an avenue for me to explore for interview as this is my area of interest & where I excel? Eg autism & ADHD, bipolar & substance misuse etc. I want to fit the generic criteria but also want to stand out as well as I have a prior degree in English & philosophy I believe there is 'extra' bits I can bring in that will make my interview a bit more unique & enable me to stand out. I have had research published as an undergraduate on eating disorders; as much as it doesn't pertain to the MH practitioner role specifically would it be worth mentioning in terms of ensuring quality of care etc? Could you recommend any reading for a generic young persons MH practitioner role in terms of policies & so forth? I'd greatly appreciate it. I know the Thrive framework is a big one at the moment. I really struggle with generic questions as I'm not always sure what they're getting at/miss out the most obvious! The Trust values for the role are the 6 Cs: when being asked about what I think the most important values are can I draw upon the Trusts but my own philosophy as well? I don't want to be subversive but equally I don't want to give a 'bog standard' answer that anyone could conjure up, I want to stand out. I'd like to add innovation to list as well for example but support this with evidence ie how it ties back to competence. Thanks for your help.
@@Tified967 I hope your interview goes well. You'll be led by the interviewers and yes you can bring up examples to give depth to your answers and stand out. It's great you have these areas of interests and you definitely should bring up your publication. Well done for publishing! @@user-vy9yy6fx2d Review the job description for your key responsibilities and the teams you will be working with. Arrange an informal visit to talk through the role and service priorities. ❤Thank you so much .. it’s too late to request for informal visit as the interview is in two days ! But will try my best ! This is my dream job for the last 5-6 years !
Thank you for this! how do we weave CAsp into a lit review, do we say something such as "CASP was used to assess the robustness of the research method in this study, since xyz...? thank you!
Yes CASP appraisal tools provide checklists to appraise the reliability and robustness of studies and the applicability of evidence. If your lit review is a dissertation, then some Unis also like an example table where you present studies using a CASP tool in the thesis or appendices so check with your dissertation lead. Otherwise you just write as you have said, and provide the reference. I hope that helps @Happymidwife
Hello Carol, please I would like to know if there’s literacy and numeracy interview for nurse associate applicants? If yes please how can I have some tips ? Thanks
If you look at the application criteria it usually states that you need a level of English before you apply e.g. GCSE grade C, functional level 2 English or equivalent. Unis have different criteria so I'm unsure if any make you do literacy tests and what they would be. It would be worth asking on student nurse facebook sites if anyone has had tests before that might help. Wishing you all the best with your application. @SANDRATERESA-jb3yw
My university doesn't teach anything and they expect you present a good paper. They don't teach things like this. I learned so much from you. Thank you so much
Thank you for taking the time to feedback, I'm really glad the videos help in some way. Wishing you all the best with your Uni course @AngeloDeLosReyes-ix2ct
As an ODP student about to qualify ( OSCE left to pass ).This is really useful...it can be hard to describe the roles sometimes..it was the Anesthetics I was drawn to x
Lots of Universities are linked to employers and if you contact the apprentice course leads they will usually let you know which employers offer apprenticeships locally Rachel. Keep an eye out for apprenticeship events where employers and Universities advertise their apprenticeships too.
Thank you so much for the detailed video. I got my trainee ACP post today and your video gave me so much information to attain that success. Thank you so much ❤
You may be asked about why want to work with children, any experience caring for children children, what do you know about this employer and the role you've applied for (i.e. the research you have done linked to the role and job description).
In the Tell me about yourself? NHS Interview question how is this for an answer? - I have worked in Admin and Retail, customer facing roles, having studied the Job description in detail I feel I have a lot of transferable skills and my strengths and experience are a good match for the role of nursing assistant. For example, I am a caring person who gets great satisfaction from meeting others. I am a strong communicator with excellent organisation skills and can work well in a team and under pressure. I understand this Job will be extremely challenging at times, but I prefer to work in a pressurized environment where I can make a difference, outside of work I like reading, listening to music and hiking.
Thanks for this, you bring alot of clarity and structure in your content. I really like that you look back at the influences from the oast to understand how we are where we are. Also the reflexivity of approaches.❤
Yes as you may be asked why you want to become an ODP? What are the key responsibilities of ODP? Why you chose apprenticeship route and what the course/ apprentinceship entails? How you plan to manage your time / balance assingments with apprenticeship etc. I hope your interview goes well. 🍀
Primary prevention aims to prevent disease or injury before it occurs, e.g. altering unhealthy behaviours that can lead to disease. Secondary prevention is reducing impact of disease. Hope that helps.
@@carolforde-johnston it does thank you, so really you could receive secondary prevention at primary sector services e.g insulin shots at GP? I appreciate your help and your videos!
@@Charthe1st Yes secondary prevention could include daily aspirin to prevent further stroke or heart disease so yes this would work to stabilise diabetes and prevent complications.
@@Charthe1st I don't know if this article helps at all linking to diet and exercise too: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2923378/#:~:text=Primary%20prevention%20means%20intervention%20before,beta%2Dcells%20remain%20after%20diagnosis
It's great that you have got an interview and you are preparing for it. Remember the interviewers take account of nerves too. If you look into the course and apprenticeship, know what you are applying for and why you want to do an apprenticeship it really helps. Wishing you all the best in your interview. 🍀
When you have a purely quantitative study you have numerical data and can have descriptive statistics but the study data is quantitative. However if there is a discussion in the paper it could describe the findings using words - is this what you mean? Just because you describe the data findings doesnt make the study data qualitative though, if the study was a purely quantitative study. Not sure if that helps.
Dear Carol, I was doing my dissertation whilst pregnant (1st trimester) 😵. I have been a follower of your work on social media platforms. Your posts benefit nurses and have led me in the right direction for my dissertation. Now that I have completed my dissertation recently and got a 72% grade. Your explanation of the literature review dissertation topic is beneficial and clear indeed. From the beginning of the first video, I have watched interview prep questions to finishing my degree. I can't thank you enough for the tremendous influence you have shared. Thank you very much, and God bless ❤❤❤
@@jerrianjoyceandrada1638 Thank you for the feedback and well done on your dissertation result! You obviously worked really hard. Wishing you every success in your future career ❤ @jerrianjoyceandrada1638
