We are building our cabin from scratch!! We will be harvesting and sawing all the lumber ourselves that we will use to build our cabin! We sold our home in the suburbs to live our dream in rural Maine. I am the type of guy who lives off the land, so if I can make it myself or reuse it, I'll do it.
This process started last year, but we recently decided to start a RU-vid channel.
Videos will be candid and live time as I make my way through sawing, cutting and building our home. Things are bound to get interesting with three hounds and a Mrs. in the mix ;) stay tuned!
I will also upload fishing, hunting and recreational videos as I go... outdoorsman indeed!

You can buy a ferrule kit on the internet but I found the ferrule to be too much trouble in the long run. I cut a fresh end, looped the cable around a 3/8” wire rope thimble, secured with two cable clamps, threaded the thimble thru a eye grab hook before securing the two cable clamps, and ended up with a better end for my FX110. The ferrule setup won’t hold up for 2 days when pulling in rocky soils, at least for me. Good luck.

Hey Andy. I have a question about your sawmill. I finally bit the bullet and ordered one. Should have it by Friday and can't wait. Just curious what degree blade you use and find that works best and where do you get them sharpened? These are the things that I didn't research before ordering. Lol
@CentralMaineOutdoorsman
@CentralMaineOutdoorsman 4 месяца назад
Nice! You will enjoy it! I bought a 10 pack of the Norwood Saber Tooth blades. They are 10deg. From what I can tell 10 deg is good for all around hard wood and soft wood. A guy on Corinna center road (same road as Dexter Lumber)does my sharping. Forgot his first name but Clark’s saw sharpening. It was 9$ per blade. He does a good job. Sorry haven’t posted any videos lately, bun busy trying to get stuff done.

@CentralMaineOutdoorsman no need to apologize. I've been trying to get dirt work done in between the rain so I get it. For all the projects I have planned, the price of lumber just is not justifiable compared to a mill and 120 acres of trees. Lol. I really appreciate the information. There will be a pretty good chance I'll be picking your brain again. 😆

I’d stay away from antifreeze… just one (1 ) lick by your pup & no more. Stick with good quality Car windshield fluids. Some people add dish soap to this to help in the lube. Building shelters for mill & milled lumber is your TOP Priority!!! Outdoors logging & milling… is there any better? Cheers….. Yvon. @CentralMaineOutdoorsman
@CentralMaineOutdoorsman 4 месяца назад
Hey there! Glad you like the video! You’ve got a nice machine! Well it’s a pain to get the back hoe on the tractor unless you have it on nice level ground but you will get used to it as you use it. Basically as your getting the hoe connected to your machine you will need to hook up the hydraulic hoses and turn the rear remotes on and work the backhoe so that you can line it up and connect it to your tractor. Once it’s connected I like to run my machine around 2k rpm’s and you’re ready to work. If you don’t have a set of nice cleats I would make some or buy a set so your stabilizer arms have a nice footing. Enjoy!
@Kennebec_Craft
@Kennebec_Craft 4 месяца назад
@@CentralMaineOutdoorsman OK, great, thanks for the reply. So the backhoe is on the machine. My issue is once I've got the tractor on, up to 2k RPM, do you just hop on the backhoe and get to work? Or do I need to lever anything else before doing that?
@CentralMaineOutdoorsman
@CentralMaineOutdoorsman 4 месяца назад
@@Kennebec_Craft no problem! you’re gonna wanna put the tractor in neutral, set the parking brake and use the remotes on the right hand side of the driver seat.The lever will be set to a A or B depending on how you hook up the hoses.

You guys got so much more snow than we did (Clifton). The vinyl floor is a game changer. We only put it under the roost but would do the whole floor next time. It makes cleaning it out a breeze. We've had issues with nearly every predator, the biggest one...domestic dogs. But hawks too. We've got a large fenced area which is where the hawks got our birds, didn't have an issue with them when the chickens were free ranging. That may have been just luck though. I ended up running heavy red fishing line over the fenced area in a zig-zag. (500yds! haha) The theory being hawks can see it and won't fly into an area if they think they can't get out. Never had an issue with them after that.

Ya we got hit hard! This is some good stuff! I see a lot of people free ranging there birds and always made me wonder 💭. I like the string idea! I have a lot of work ahead of me once this snow melts some, I will probably start on some fencing and get the post in the ground then finish up the coop as I already have it enclosed. (Will see it on the next episode)Thanks for the good info!

I had some leftover road fabric from when I did my driveway so I used that for the bottom of the coop for now. I’m not sure if it’s 100% water proof but I’m pretty sure it will do the job.
@MrBrewner
@MrBrewner 5 месяцев назад
@CentralMaineOutdoorsman I thought road fabric was designed to allow the water to drain through it but I don't really know anything about it. The coop looks great. Nice and simple. I have another tip for ya. Create some sort of feed storage at the chicken coop because the grain is what attracts the rodents. I would recommend metal 55 gal drums. The plastic drums do not stop the rodents. Learned that the hard way also.

Andy I would advise you get a few black chickens to help with the hawk issues that we have around here. Black chickens mimic crows or ravens and hawks try to stay away from crows and ravens. We started with 24 chickens and 3 ducks a year and a half ago. We now have 5 hens because of the fox and hawk problems around here. And you said your not far from me so I imagine you'll have many of the same problems. Oh and another tip for ya, keep your coop as far from your house as possible. Chickens attract rats.
@CentralMaineOutdoorsman

@@CentralMaineOutdoorsman yeah I would have been okay without this crap. I took the snowblower off of the tractor too. As of right now I measured 10 inches and we're suppose to get 12 more by morning with 25mph winds. Not good. Another thing I forgot to mention that I would recommend for your chicken coop, lay down vinyl flooring. Between the acidity of the chickenpoop, that many chickens, and stray or bedding, the floor will never dry out. It will save you alot of headaches.

I hear ya! No by all means I’m down for any advice! I will lay vinyl, i know the wood floor would need some help. I see people free ranging their chickens around town and I always wonder how they do it without loss. I know my dogs will help a little bit but they won’t keep away everything.
@MrBrewner
@MrBrewner 5 месяцев назад
@CentralMaineOutdoorsman yeah I have 2 dogs also and it doesn't phase the fox around here. Just remember that you have a right to protect your livestock anytime from anything except bald eagles and hawks. I know it sounds backwards, but don't insulate the coop. Chickens, when grown, don't need heat, but they do need ventilation. Their fume that they release will kill them. Also with that many chickens and ducks your going to have so many eggs that your not going to know what to do with them all. Give your dogs 1 raw egg a day mixed in their kibble. It's really good for them and keeps your stockpile down some. Feed your spent egg shells back to your chickens. They need calcium to produce eggs and that's a great source of it for them. Just grind them and give them back to them. They'll eat them as they need them. You may know most of this already but I'm just trying to pass on what we learned. Can't help with the goats. I know nothing about goats other than make sure you have a tall fence. Lol
