Have you wanted to switch careers to Cybersecurity? Afraid you aren't technical enough? Would you like to try Identity and Access Management (IAM)? If so, you are in the right place. Sharing my years of experience as a business analyst, project manager, and tester, my videos will cover topics ranging from the building blocks of IAM to career transitioning and everything in-between.
Hey Andrew! You interviewed me for a job back in Feburary of 2023. You didn't move forward with me as a candidate. But its good to see that you are here giving advice to the General Public. Hope OKTA is treating you well!
Hi, I’m a recent graduate with a little IT experience, I‘m new to the IAM space, I have SC-300, CyberArk PAM & sec+ certs. I have Azure AD & Entra ID listed on my resume, I’ve been applying & little luck getting interviews what am I missing if you don’t mind?
Without seeing your resume, how are you showing the knowledge gained when achieving those certs? I think it’s awesome you have them. However, can you tell me why you want to use cyberark, why Pam, etc. Also, you said you had little it exp. I feel doing projects and adding them to your resume will help you with hiring managers. It shows you know how to apply what you’ve learned in the IAM space and that you can explain what you did and why.
Hey Andrew, I’m trying to transition from one non tech career to IAM. Thank you for the videos. Is there a roadmap I can follow that would let me the fast way to get into the field? I’m also looking for a mentor, please let me know if you are available.
Im actually working on developing a roadmap for folks like yourself. I was working on a new LinkedIn learning course but that is done, so my focus is the roadmap. As for mentor, book a session with me via my website, I’d love to chat with you.
No, it’s not. IAM is focused on giving folks the right access and the right time. DB admins do manage access for users to login to their DB but DB also help make the DB faster for searches etc.
Professional, I don’t think so. I don’t know if SailPoint university has a free into course or not. Reason why I made this video was to showcase the basics for people.
what are your thoughts on Sailpoint vs Saviynt vs Pathlock? I'm trying to pick between these vendors for provisioning as well as controls for SAP and Dynamics.
Quick question. How come you are not able to get job offers? Have you gotten any job interviews and do you have any projects on your resume? Also, are you new to the IT field?
Are you to create a server add it to a domain? Then create group policies to lock down or grant access to certain features. Complete that add it to a resume you’ll get a job . And do the same in the cloud as well using conditional access etc
Hi I’m sorry for the late reply, getting a certification can help you get an interview but it’s not the all end be all. Like the others have commented, you need to make sure you have experience or project in addition to your resume. Are you getting calls back from recruiters or interviews?
I'm glad I found your page about a career in IAM. I'm in the same boat as you. I talk fast and stutter when I speak, too. I wish I had the confidence to speak on RU-vid.
Sorry for the late response. For speaking, I read a few public speaking books that helped me feel more confident. After that, it’s just practice and at the end, say F it and do it! If you mess up or stutter, all good :) trust me, I’ve 100% stuttered during a presentation at a conference before. I laugh at it and move on. Trust me, I know you can do it….:)
This is some good information and this is the lane I want to go into for my cybersecurity career. Thanks for the video and hope to see more new videos in the future.
I have the CIAM-Certified Identity Access Manager certification from the Identity Management Institute, and I am working on the new Security+ now. I have seen a few companies asking for the CIAM cert. IMO, i think that is a good starter IAM cert to have as well.
I got 403 Access Forbidding error. I don't know where I got it wrong. I am guessing it was when I was creating the custom mapping on the (External name: I copied and pasted this (schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2005/05/identity/claims/givenname)) Is that the correct way of filling in the External name?
Also, is it necessary to customize all the listed attributes in Azure as custom in Okta? I have 6 Attributes and claims in Azure but only customized email, first, and last_name in Okta attribute.
@@AllThingsIAMThanks. However your url is missing the www part. It seems that when I put www in your site url, it doesn't work and gives site not found error. It seems to be a domain or hosting issue. I would love to go through your site, however since your url is currently do not have the www part, it is probably not secure.
At the IDP Signature Certification, when I browse files, only my folders show up. It does not show any of my downloaded files. I restarted my computer but still can't access my files. Did anyone experience the same issue?
I came across this video today, and I really love it. My question is how do I input this experience into my resume. I am new to adding projects to resume. A resume is supposed to be one page so how do I include this project so it does not exceed one-page resume?
I don’t think you need to keep your resume to 1 page anymore. It depends in my opinion the level of experience you have. I feel 2 is sufficient. Finally, I think you should put projects near the top of your resume if you don’t have a lot of working experience in the IAM field. It can help showcase that even though you don’t have “working experience” you have done projects showing you know the stuff.
@@AllThingsIAM I have been stuck with this error "The domain portion of the userPrincipalName property is invalid. You must use one of the verified domain names in your organization." when I submitted the form. how can I get pass this?
If you are looking to work on projects implementing/maintaining IIQ, I feel it’s nice to have. It helps validate you know what you are doing and it could help you when it comes time for salary negotiations.
Great video man very fun as well. Tip: If anyone is getting a 400 error login failed check the user your logging in with and make sure their email is actually set, Also a good Chrome extension "Saml Tracer" helped with finding the error.
Haha. They said sailpoint can do what??? Ummmmm crap! I say that often ahah. I can make a video on my experiences on that and what I’ve learned from an integrator and a customer.
@@jaylaflare7354 Make sure that the directory <root>\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 9.0\webapps\host-manager exists. If not, copy the “manager” folder in webapps and rename it to “host-manager
Agree with the getting experience to some of these tools and technologies. When there is no developer edition etc. to gain experience via hands on labs, project etc. Good note.
Great video. I look forward to watching your upcoming content. Definitely going to setup a session or 2 for mentoring. Right now i am in an organization that is using Sailpoint Identity Now.
Advice!!? I just got a summer internship with RTX(Raytheon Technologies) as a cyber defense analyst working in Identity management. I graduate with a bachelors in Cybersecurity in august and will be going to graduate school in the fall for MS-Management Information Systems. This is my first job in IT and would love some advice on recommendations to best prepare? I do have compTIA sec + cert and I am familiar with Active directory, Powershell and scripting languages.
Hi! You don’t need to be technical to be successful in IAM. You can choose a route to help folks by helping customers understand their IAM issues, for example, help them understand what are their gaps with their onboarding l (joiner) process. You can then have a technical team fix/implement the solution. I’m a firm believer in knowing the core concepts of IAM first. All are non technical.
nice video sir i've just subscribed to ur channel please can you do a tutorial on how to set up Authentication and authorization tools, i will be very greatfull if you can help me out
Thank you so much for this video ! I've been looking for work in cybersecurity and this has helped me decode the job descriptions, especially when it seems they are muddling/mixing job descriptions and titles. I'm definitely going to take your advice on the Okta homelab. When you mentioned Sailpoint's training paywall, I cackled because I just Xed out of their training page earlier today for that reason.
I was told their free version wasn’t very detailed. I know companies have to make money and I get that. Don’t get me wrong , I’ve taken their hands on training but my company paid for it. I can understand how much paying 2k or so is hard for folks breaking in. I’m going to work on a few sailpoint videos soon. Hopefully they won’t give me crap for it.
I recently passed the okta certified administrator exam. I’m looking to get the Microsoft certified security compliance and identity fundamentals cert next. It looks like I’m on the right path. Great video.
I do hate those job req that require that, it's 2024, I think they shouldn't require a college degree anymore. I've worked with some amazing IAM folks who don't have a college degree. My hope is even the govt stops requiring it for contractors. My suggestion is to look at the bigger consulting firms (booz allen, deliotte, PWC, EY, Accenture, etc.) to see if they have jr iam roles. Trust me I get frustrated with the market. I also feel that showing you know your stuff using projects, etc could be looked upon as work equivalency. I do hope it changes soon, because IAM needs people who want to do good and IAM only getting bigger.
How big is your gap, is this something some hands on project work/hands on messing around in Okta or Azure can't fix? I don't care if your 19 or 50 + you know your IAM stuff and can help us, we should hire you.
@@AllThingsIAM more than 4 years. I was in Thailand when COVID struck and was stuck there for more than 2 years. I'm in Australia now. I will follow your advice from this video.
I found this playlist that could help you. I haven't looked at them but it looks to be pretty comprehensive: ru-vid.com/group/PLVNl9sThbR3G-W-wI0ik7gMHrcMypBraN
I would work on understanding the core concepts of IAM. I made earlier videos to help you. Once you get a better understanding, I feel you can start to get more hands-on training with free options like Okta.
Just found your channel today, watched couple of videos and loved them all. I look forward to more projects that can be included in resume 🙏 Thank you.
im excited been looking for certs that i should get .. i have the trifecta and i want to become a IAM engineer and i do not know where to start as far as what certs and projects to do and get looking forward too it.. will be buying those books tonight
Hi! Sorry for the late response, there are vendor specific training like sailpoint and okta to name a few but it’s more geared to their product and they can be $$$.
