I regularly post informative tips and tutorial videos about videography and video editing with a focus on sports.
My career is creating short-form sports and event-based video content for brands in the GTA and beyond that gets attention in a digital world - but this RU-vid channel is where I post about my experiences producing that content with the goal of helping you start and flourish on your journey with videography.
New videos come out on Monday, usually with one upload every week, though this can vary from time to time depending on my work schedule.
I hope that you get a lot of value out of my content, whether it be education, entertainment, or both, and am excited to be a part of your growth as a video enthusiast or professional.
Greatly appreciate the video, Peter. Curious as to the balance of the camera once you have the pan and tilt unlocked? Is it front heavy?….Back heavy? Thanks again. 👍
Slightly front heavy but unless it is very loosely unlocked it won’t tip forward when left alone, and even if it does the hi hat doesn’t get toppled over
New subscriber... and thanks for doing this. My one question is... does there need to be a gap between the flip screen and the v-mount battery module? Thanks.
question, have you had situations where the ground in uneven and what do you do in this instance? iv tried to even out the legs after using balance level to compensate but this is not ideal if im moving locations during the game. I see that some NFL films cam ops mount their hi-hat to a wooden board but i dont know what their reason is.
Never seen the wooden board trick but I imagine that’d be handy for keeping more level ground. If the ground is a bit uneven I’ll usually either adjust the position of my ball head if it isn’t perfectly level or slightly kick one of the hi hat legs in to even out the horizon. Fortunately I’d say that this isn’t an issue that I run into too often during a game as long as the head is correctly positioned to start
It's really interesting to me you've been using the 4.5-5.6 lens recently. It really breaks the stereotype of needing a 2.8 or even a 4.0 lens to make good content (which I know you've mentioned before). Do you see any quality lost when using higher apertures for close ups? Also, why the switch back to the sonyfx30? Doesn't the FX3 perform way better in low light?
I don’t see any quality loss using a smaller aperture/higher f-stop, and find that I get depth of field that’s plenty shallow from the focal length. Definitely don’t need an f2.8, especially when more telephoto, and I enjoy how the higher f-stop makes pulling manual easier as well. Using the Sony FX30 more nowadays because I like the extra reach of the crop sensor, and shooting in the stadiums that I’m in, I have just enough light to properly expose 60fps on that body at the dual base ISO of 2500 at f5.6
the 100-400 is a fantastic lens, wide enough on the short end and tight enough for cross field shots, paired with g master quality. I love it and don’t regret not getting the 70-200 gm2
Thanks Peter for walking through that. I've been doing more and more soccer stuff, I'm finding having to remember to change batteries at half time is a pain, and I'd rather be able to just plug in and not have to worry about my monitor and my camera. I was looking at the small rig plate that doesn't require rails ... seems nice as it's on a quick release plate, and the batter is on a hing and can fold outwards to get access to the screen ... great to see how pros rig their cameras. Thanks
Wouldn’t say that all pros rig their cameras using smallrig, I think that depends on where you work and the type of work you do lol. Tbh whatever gear is convenient for you and lets you do the best work is what you should use, regardless of what is “right”
That QT gamma compensation Lut is no longer necessary. All you have to do now is go to Lumetri panel, go to settings, then drop down menu of preferences and check "Display Color Management". Never again have I used the QT gamma lut. Premiere now reflects the real colors when make sure "Display Color Management" is checked on.
Crazy how i went to your account last night to watch your old rig video and i checked again right now and i saw you JUST posted this 😅 what are the chances
Yeah I had a window open while clouds were rolling by when I filmed this and tbh couldn’t be bothered to match colours with the changing light in post 😂
Awesome video Peter. I’m getting into sports videography for football and basketball and your channel and videos have been a huge help. Do you plan to use the fx30 as a main cam for basketball also?
For basketball I’d likely use the FX3 with the Tamron 35-150 or a 70-200mm depending on how far I am from the court, but the fx30 with the right lens is certainly useable for basketball
So looking forward to what you share in this video. I only have an fx30 and have being filming local youth soccer games and getting great results. Interested in yout tiny tripod setup and results.
Ok, not sure if this comment will be reviewed but, I'm 65 years old film high school football from the sideline. Over the past two years I've managed to save enough to purchase a camera and lens. Based on this video I'm thinking the FX3 and Sony 70-200mm F4 lens would be the idea solution for me. Agree or disagree? I love your content, Peter. Thank you for all the solid advice and honest input. I don’t generate a lot of income, I do it because I love the game and I know the kids/parents love the highlight videos. Thank you!!!
That’s amazing to hear you’re getting onto the sidelines! I’m sure those kids and parents really appreciate it. Don’t feel like you necessarily need to purchase an FX3 or anything too expensive like that. I use one for my work as a professional, but as a hobbyist in a situation like yours a less expensive body like the FX30 or even mirrorless camera that is a generation older like the Sony A7iii off the used market can work great. I used to shoot with the A7iii and 70-200mm f4 all the time (watch some of my older basketball videos on this channel) and the results were definitely suitable for your needs. Regardless of what you choose wishing you all the best with your filming!
Just a camera strap around my neck. Between that, the weight of the rig, and stabilization in the camera and lens I don’t need anything else with a 70-200mm lens
Thanks for this Pete! I start my videography journey tomorrow with a collegiate baseball team, so perfectly timed video for when I go into the editing process!
Videos are always helpful! Is there a certain picture profile or recording format like cine4 you used on the a7iii? I see a lot of people recommend shooting in cine4 cause the a7iii can’t handle slog 3.
That’s strange, you shouldn’t need a promo code at all for the glitch transitions on my website. If you continue to have issues please send me an email to info@petersarellas.com and I will assist further there.
@@Devonairereacts that lens is a crop sensor lens and the a7iii is a full frame camera so I’d recommend finding a comparable full frame lens instead if you’re going to use that camera
@@petersarellasahhh I ordered it🤦🏾♂️ what one do u recommend I had a prime 50 but I wanted one with more room to work with so I was think 17-50 but it’s cropped so imma have to cancel that order
Even now in 2024 you have saved my life with this video 🥹 I struggled so much with overexposed video material since using a new phone camera and this video solved all the issues I've been struggling with for month ... thank you.
I bought that Tamron 28-75 2.8 G2 as my first ever lens and I couldn’t be happier. The autofocus is quick, great image quality, and even though it’s light, that is also an advantage for photographers. All of Tamron e-mount lenses seem to be lighter than its counterparts in Sony or Sigma.
@@petersarellas very kind of you, thanks! I’m thinking the slow shutter for some of the warm up’s backstage. I’ll tag you when on IG when I post it to my am fight media account, around July 8 or so. Thanks again!
Congrats to @jovxxnn, @ReidVV, and @MatisMedia for winning the giveaway! 🎉 Please shoot me a DM on Instagram @psarellas, though I will be reaching out to you as well!
hey man! love videos i have a question. Im about to shoot my first basketball game in a few and need to know if this setup is enough. Nikon D3400 kit 18-55mm and Sigma 70-300mm
