Well, through my spakers they all sound the same. I could be imagining, but I'd say that 498 was the best. My guitar has the original 500T/496R setup. I've never liked the sound, which isn't tight at all. I'd prefer more compressed sound. Gibson ceramic pickups do not seem to be overly popular and many have complained the same. I've been too lazy to open the pickguard (which sadly includes removing the bridge) to see if simply changing the pots could solve the problem.
JVM definitely didn't need the 1 extra bass, nor the extra treble or presence. You could have probably made them lower than the 800 setting. One thing I would do for sure for the JVM is bring mid up to 5 from 4. Gotta factor in for 800's extra natural mids. I'd like to see a redo just from JVM
I had this same lil rig and the Mooer 016 (Engl FB) with a Donner noise killer and TS mini and a EHX Magnum 44 power amp pedal to go to a cab as well and was amazing sounding! Wasn’t more than $400 then like 5 yrs ago and if u want a great sounding cheap preamp pedal u can’t go wrong with either the 005 or 016. Even the built in cab sim sounds good and can pick them up used for about $50. Another awesome cheap preamp pedal is the Joyo Rigel which is their take on a KSR Ceres and actually sounds more like the Vesta and can get them both to sound almost identical to each other.
Dirty fingers had the most presence, mids and cut but the least bottom end. 500t was really tight and articulate with a great sizzle but thinner in the mids. 498 was the roundest and fullest but least defined in the attack. All of them are cool and different players would prefer one to the other.
I think it just depends on what pickups you have too. I have a Dimebucker that actually sounds better with 300k than 500k, but the classic PAF's I have sound amazing with 500k pots.
I got tones like this in the 80s from my JMP boosted by an SD-1 or some such pedal. With the MXR I really got that Rhoads tone. But not as tight as the SD-1.
I have a 1988 Gibson V with dirty fingers, and I put reissue dirty fingers in a 2011 gives and Les Paul. I’d like to see a comparison, I like the 80s better, but I’d like to hear them recorded in a sound studio so I can hear them side-by-side.
It's close, but the amp has a slightly more open sound. I love my Kemper, but it does have that slight upper-mid heavy, almost cocked wah thing. Just enough to tell the difference.
Both the Gibson 498T and 500T are amazing pickups. Love the 500T in my Gibson Explorer. Original Dirty Fingers go for stupid prices like I saw one for over £500 just for 1!
Dude come back to developing this channel man. All the BS vendor rep RU-vidrs suck and we need a professional sound engineer who can shred to show us what gear ACTUALLY is worth a damn dude. About 12-15 years ago you put me onto the Uberschall and it was the best decision I ever made. Now we need to see some legitimate non-biased demos from dudes like you!!!
That tone... It hits hard but the note clarity is excellent. Credit to the performance, also. I play bass, have been considering a boosted plexi setup for the blended dirt side of my pedalboard, and I think this video just sold me on that idea.
I found my standard to be a bit lacking in presence but its good to see it does sound a lot better through an amp and cab. Seriously considering this or a psa 1.1 for a gig rig
man this sounds great. your cab reviews and videos in general have been so helpful to us all over the years. what is your favorite cab these days? i’m considering flying to Indiana to try a bunch of cabs at Sweetwater, but i’m curious what yours is sicnr you compared them all back in the day. i tried the Soldano cab at a GC today and realized how unsure i am of what the best cab for my use (death/thrash metal) is
1) Herbert, 2) Einstein, 3) Vh4 Me Encanta Diezel pero si los tuviera que ordenar de mejor a mejor, el 1 seria el mejor, batallado muy a la par con el Einstein.
Actully older emgs are compressed, but the newer ones are not. If you record the newer models and look at the wave length, they are not chopped off like the older models which are compressed. There were some component supplier changes in 2019 that impacted the overall headroom of some pickup models (including the 81). Newer 81s produce a signal that is less compressed, which is a huge benefit for clean tones but they might not interact quite the same with your gain channels and/or pedals. The best workaround we’ve found is to place a compressor/limiter pedal first in the chain (or immediately after a tuner) and set it to have a “hard knee” response. Some compressor pedals have a dedicated “limiter” setting to cover this application, and others respond like a limiter as you turn up the compression ratio." - EMG Engineer
Sounds killer! On a side note, have you ever considered doing a mix walk through of an Alestorm, Wind Rose or Gloryhammer song? Your productions are absolutely amazing and it would be great to have an insight. I’ve watched the Bootyard Bandits walkthrough a bunch of times. Cheers mate! 🤘
Okay the guitar tone is great, but the vocals??? Major King Buzzo vibes for me. Dont make me spend 1200 dollars and not even get the voice that goes with it.
