Hey Harry You snuck these two videos in under my radar. I just got to them. Great job on the doorhandle. Don’t ever think that your videos go too long. Thanks for making the video on the fender, Sometimes I have the tendency to overthink things😂 Thank you again, Tom
Hi Tom, I do have a tendency to overthink things. I keep changing my mind, I'm driving myself crazy. Lol. Now I'm doing flush windows on the GTO. I actually found someone to paint for me. So that's going to give me a deadline to do all the body work. Thanks for commenting and watching. All the best
@classicrewind2715 yes sir absolutely..very well put together..rebuilding a 66 chevy ll and wasn't sure how to raise the center up like u dud in this video..now I know..thank you
Thanks for he video it was helpful, one question how much do you think that the same amount of body that you have (shell) how much does it weigh?? I have mins on a trailer and need to get to my left and I was wondering if 4 guys can move from the trailer off to my left
That is a good question.. The body off the frame is not that heavy. If you remove the bumper and fenders, four guys can easily move it. I would say about 300 pounds. Don't forget most of the weight is in the engine, transmission. and the rear axle. I hope this helps. All the best..
Thanks, No, I'm going to eliminate the trim. All the trim on the car actually. I'm getting ready to make my windshield and rear window flush mounted. Thanks for commenting. All the best
Great work Harry. Dumb question, after tacking the metal, could you remove the fender? Just to make it easier on you. So you could put it on a work bench? Of course, this is assuming your tack welds will hold when you unbolt the fender.
Thanks for commenting. Yes, I could have taken it off after I tack welded. You would have to take the hood, inner Fender unbolt the Rad Support. So a lot more work would be involved. Trying to minimize taking the car apart. I lost track how many times I took the car apart, LOL. All the best.
Thank you so much. I pulled the entire bumper off to remove the headlights. I feel stupid now but I need to remove them again so now I know you will save me soooooo much time. Legend mate thanks.
Put the whole front clip on and then realized that I did not put the font section of the emergency brake cable in up to the pedal bracket . I fear eventually I will be taking it apart again as I have not thought of a minimal invasive correction yet other than pulling the driver fender again.
It's going to be difficult if the engine is in install. You might be able to get it from underneath but it will be difficult. I hate to say it but you might have to remove the fender again.
Harry, welcome back sir, we missed you and glad to see your work again. I have been thinking of adding these kindigit door handles and now you are showing me the way to properly install them. Very informative video and I will be putting it on my to do list. I did work out of town all week and home on the weekends which really reduced my garage time. But now I am working locally and just need to get back to work on my projects. Keep the videos coming we all need your guidance. Thanks Joe in Kansas , 68 Oldsmobile Hurst/Olds (442)
Hi Joe. Thank you for reaching out and leaving a comment. I just needed to take a break from the GTO. Just trying to regroup. I keep changing my mind. Now I am doing flush mounted glass. Hopefully it won't kill my time frame too much. I want to get it in epoxy primer this year. I'm waiting for the Vintage Air Gen 5 to come out for the gto. I need to weld the bracket to the firewall. So I do not know how long I have to wait for that. Thanks for commenting. Stay healthy, All the best
That's very dangerous to your health to sand on that lead seam. Those particles are all over your shop, your clothes and you will have a hard time getting rid of it Use a chemical stripper on that lead seam to expose it
Very good information. Thanks for commenting. That's why I heated it up and scraped It off first. I'm sure there's still some lead floating around. I use my respirator a lot. It's not shown in the videos that much because you can't talk through it. All the best
Yes, since I replaced the quarter panels I wasn't sure if everything was lined up properly, so I went with the rocker panels. I had to go back and readjust the whole front end. It wasn't lining up. It's all on the spacing from your radiator core support. Once I dial the Core Support in with the proper bushings, everything lined up. I hope this helps. Keep in touch. All the best..
Went through the Same hell with 72 Chevelle after market cowl induction hood and ended up finding a orginal cowl induction hood and paid up for it,, was no way without doing serious changes
Thanks for commenting. Yes, those original hoods are very costly. I finally got everything to fit properly on the goat. It took some persuading. My buddy has a 71 Mustang that has the original hood. they're going for above $900. He ended up getting an aftermarket so he could cut it apart and put a scoop in it. All the best..
Morning Harry, I totally get your feelings of being overwhelmed with your GTO project. I too often feel exactly the same, taking care of house, lawn and the wife’s honey-do list I can go weeks without touching my car but don’t lose focus of what we really love to do and you are really great at it. If you decide to do the flush mount windows please do a video on this, I’m considering this even more than the flush door handles. If I still lived in Kendall Park I’d swing by so we could experiment on my Chevelle. Keep your chin up pal, “one step at a time” HAVE A GREAT DAY !!!
David, thanks for the kind words. Is Kendall Park South Jersey by New Brunswick? I will definitely do a video on the flush mount glass. But it will probably be 2 hours long LOL. I have to learn to edit my videos more. My buddy Rodger who is very mechanically inclined will help me do the flush glass. He helped me do the custom tail light protectors. I don't know if you caught that video. I'm in New Brunswick New Jersey often maybe we could get together? All the best
@@classicrewind2715 yes, Kendall Park is in South Brunswick but I am now living 20 minutes north of Daytona Beach, FL. Would be tough, lol. I don’t know about some but I certainly don’t care about how long a video game is when it’s something I’m interested in. Good luck with that project and if you’re ever planning on attending the Turkey Rod Run car show at Daytona Speedway or any other event here let me know I’d like to meet you !
@davidrosenthal735 Yes, now I remember you're down in Florida. You used to live in South Brunswick. Hopefully, one day are paths will cross. I will definitely make a video on the flush front and rear window. Keep in touch my friend period all the best
Great video Harry, your explanations of the issues you ran into along the way are invaluable. Let’s face it, how often do us diy’ers do this. I’ve been thinking of installing the same door handles on my 64 Chevelle, guaranteed I would have overlooked these things as you did. BTW, your car is coming along great ! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for commenting. I really appreciate the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Good luck with your 64 Chevelle I hope it comes out great. On my GTO, I'm thinking of making flush mounted windows. I don't think I'm ever going to get this GTO done. LOL. All the best
Nice! Those door handles are bad ass! I put them on my GTO last year! Great product but not for a beginner to install!! Very finicky, and I’m a high end finish carpenter so super picky with all the reveals. I did grind the mount plate before, but it still sat in a tiny bit, but when I did the final skim coat, I also did the handle as well. I pulled the handle and put tape around it 3/4 times so I created the reveal, it’s a lot of handle off and on, but at the end of it, it was absolutely perfect. Fold sand paper and slowly sliding it in and around made it perfect. Good to watch the progress. I should be dropping a video on 69 GTO with all the new carbon fiber fenders in a couple weeks!
Thank you.. You are absolutely right, The door handles are super finicky. I am a Finnish Carpenter myself, I do interior railings. Everything I do, I try to make perfect. It takes so much time. Great idea about wrapping the handle in tape. What is your RU-vid channel ? I would like to check out your videos. Thanks for commenting. I hope you enjoyed the video. All the best.
@@classicrewind2715 www.youtube.com/@DIYfatbodyGTO Part 2 shows the handles installed, and shows the take around the handle sticking out, but it was back when I didn’t talk, just video and music! Good to see a fellow finish carpenter ripping into cars!
it seems if they would have put a slight step (thickness of the door skin) in the handle housing all the way around (in place of the bevel you mention) and then make your opening bigger to allow the step to come through, it would have been alot easier to install. it would also allow you to weld at the step instead of at the edge of the housing therefore keeping a nice machined gap instead of having to clean up the machined edge. It would also allow it to stick out a little further where you could file the exact contour you need., Hope that was understandable. LOL you did a great job though. Maybe a revision on that Kindig design. Let me know what you think
I hope you enjoyed the video. Yes, I agree with adding a step so you do not have to mess with the machine edge of the housing. That is a great idea!! Keep in touch. All the best.
Yes , I’ve been enjoying all your videos. I’m about to pull the body off my 70 gto . Lots of work ahead. The enduro bumper is going to be a challenge to repair . Keep the vids coming!!! Great job
After i fit my front bumper. I realized I should have done it with a steel bumper instead. I am going to paint the bumper to match the car. The metal bumper is easier to work with. I could have gotten it from a LeMans and not dealt with all the Endura bumper problems. Like cracking. Just something to think about. All the best
Thank you Anthony. I hope you enjoyed the video. I am thinking of making flush mount glass. Just trying to figure out the channel I will need to make it work. The car should have been done 8 months ago. I keep changing my mind and adding different things. All the best, keep in touch.
@AnthonyHumes-pr8vc Awesome. Keep on it my friend. It's unbelievable how much time these cars take. Especially if you keep changing your mind. Just had my friend Rodger over. We were debating on how to make flush mounted glass on the GTO. Came up with a bunch of good ideas. Now we have to put them in motion. which would probably take me a good month and a half to do. Keep in touch. All the best
Sorry for the late reply. I don't know what kind of breaks you're looking for. So I cannot answer that question. if you have a specific question. call Wilwood directly and talk to them. Thanks for leaving a comment. All the best
That pin is the stupidest design ever. Just tried for 20 minutes to wiggle it off (I did the other side no problem a couple weeks ago) and ended up cracking the plastic of my brake light :/ This tutorial did not help, but I appreciate at least from the comments knowing that I am not alone in my hatred for the pin. Death to terrible car designs.
I agree. Very frustrating, bad design. All they need to do is put a screw to maintain the break light. Sorry, that the video did not help. All the best
@classicrewind2715 I am going to buy bulb from Canadian Tire & my step son is going to help Me replace it. My female friends at work says it is easy to do. Wife says I make things harder than it really is.
@classicrewind2715 Well it was more easier than I thought. Step son helped me. Only thing that was a bit tricky was getting cover off after taking off the screws. It saved me a lot of money going to dealership which we know how sneaky they are which they would say you need so many things fixed even though you only want one thing fixed. Thanks
Thank you for commenting. I like using 0.25 wire. I think I'm using 85% argon. I never used silicon bronze. I will have to look that up. I am not familiar with that. All the Best. I hope you're enjoying the videos..
I did not adjust the ride height yet. I have no motor and interior in the car. With coil overs you can adjust any height you like. I hope this helps all the best
Thanks for sharing such a great and informative video. I recently did this same install with a Unisteer unit on my 1975 Trans AM. After a few days, I started to get a lot of fluid leaking out of the driver's side boot off the rack. I followed the recommended procedure to bleed the air out of the system, so I was surprised to have this occur. I have also discovered a lot of comments online regarding leakage from these Unisteer units. I am curious if you have you had any leakage issues with your Unisteer R&P?
Sorry for the late delay in responding. I am still in the building stage of the car. Have not put fluid in the system. hopefully, I will not have a situation like leakage. I've also heard a lot of bump steer with the unisteer R&P. Do you happen to have any bump steer with your unit? All The Best..
No bump steer that I noticed. I only had about three miles on the car before I put it back on the lift and pulled to R&P to send it off to Unisteer for repair. BTW, they are charging $350 for the repair and I pay shipping (about $100 each way.).
@DaveFaddis-u1x That's insane, they're charging you that much money for repairing their problems. They should have only charged you for shipping. Repairing it should have been their dime.. Keep in touch, let me know. All the best. Harry
No, my cowl panel went in very easily. The only problem was. I tried to fit the plastic vents, they did not fit properly. So now I have to make some kind of custom adapter to accept the plastic flange. I hope this helps. All the best...
I got quoted $450 for labor at the jeep dealership after attempting to do it myself from 2 other videos. This video was awesome. Thank you so much for saving me time and money, I got it done in less than an hour.
Very east to follow vid. On mine I have to replace the section under the filler panel also. Mice made a home in there and it didn't fair as well as yours. Now trying to find that is a struggle.
Hi. Are you talking about the panel underneath the trunk panel? I don't think they make that panel at all. You might have to make your own out of 16 gauge. I bought the top panel from OPG about 3 years ago. You have to be careful sometimes they send you out a Chevelle panel and it doesn't fit. All the best , Keep in touch
There's a place in Pennsylvania near Stroudsburg that has a 69 GTO. I don't know if it's the same package tray or not. You can call him. It's called Sebum in Stroudsburg
Sorry for the late response. I think the sport mirrors are really cool, much sleeker. I was still thinking of going with the spoiler what do you think?
My 68 is taking a ton of time as well. Midwest car. Lots of rust to repair. I did abc Mini tub, hellwig frame gusset kit. custom gussets and rear suspension work. New trunk floor, wheel houses are in. Alot more to go. I'm rolling the front fenders and modifying the inners to fit. And trimming that wheel opening heal like you are to clear larger front tires.
Your car sounds like mine. You are doing a lot of work just like mine. Keep going it's going to be awesome when you're done. I keep changing my mind, now I want to do original flush mount glass. If I decide to do that. it's going to be another month or so to complete. I didn't think of rolling the front fender wheel wells. That's a great idea. All the best... keep in touch
@@classicrewind2715 the top of the fender and inner will rub with wider wheels during compression. Thinking ahead and doing that now vs later. I like how flush mount looks. Over my skill and patience level. There's a company that sells oversized glass so you don't have to do the metal work but it's not cheap.
Thanks for filming this build. I’ve watched a lot of the videos on this as I am working on 68 chevelle SS and everything I am wanting to do you are doing! I appreciate the knowledge you are sharing! Keep it up.
Good video. I think I have the hideaway bucket brace because my headlights sit deeper in. If you found a place that carries the base for the fixed lights let me know.
