Many years ago there was only a long haired or short haired version of a German Shepherd - or Alsatian as they are known in the UK. In all cases the dog had a straight back - but the long haired version tended to have a calmer disposition and were not quite so instinctually so protective. In most cases they were all known as pretty healthy dogs, with a life span of around 12 ish years. 2022 - This wonderful breed of dog has been bred for some years to have a slopping spine and to come in different colours. 3 of my close friends have had 2 well bred (Crufts parentage) Alsatians from 8 weeks old - and one came as a rescue, aged approx. 2-3 years. In all cases, these gorgeous dogs were or became reliably well trained, safe with children, strange dogs and strangers (barked alot!) and undoubtable ALL would have defended their owners if the need arose. Sadly all 3 dogs developed spinal / hip problems so severely by aged 8-9, that they had to be euthanised. So sad. Please could someone explain why the USA and the UK continue to breed spinal defects into todays Alsatian, whatever their coat???
My rottie wouldn’t hurt a child he lives everyone unless someone knocks at my door or someone approaches me in the dark he’s only 15 months old I’m not sure witch rottie bred he is
i have a European gsd named leroy, was unsocialized with people and dogs at 4 months old never left his puppy pen. he started out nervous around any new thing like cars / people / bikes / dogs. nervous means he pulls away and cowers a bit instead of barking. once he became confident around cars / people via our walks on leash he started to get excitable when people would look at him he would start to bark wanting to go say hi.. this is not okay and can look very intimidatign to a child or elderly person.. i make him sit while they walked past then a simple ok to release him back to our walk, this allows him to realise that they meant no harm overtime as no ones ever aproached with out asking. IF and WHEN my boy Leroy ever growl / barks at someone that does not deserve to be kept at a distance i tell him to Leave it in a calm but stern tone, and if he doesnt i follow through with a correction with his prong collar, this works. as of spring this year, he walks beside me in a heel position (as good as a 8 month old is expected) - sits with leash pressure, goes down ANYWHERE ANYTIME via a hand signal and or a verbal Down. i place him in a down if there is a dog off leash and let them walk past before releasing leroy back to our walk, its fine if others want their dog to let loose, this isnt the time or place for my boy to be learning to ignore my commands off leash. disclaimer : i work with exotic animals as a trainer im not a certified dog trainer (yet) i have only got certificates in dog behavior and group management in a daycare setting, which is where my dog gets to "be a dog" and unwind with his friends in a SAFE controlled environment. i personally dont trust every one who owns a dog to be a dog handler, nor have the confidence to buck up if shit hits the fan which is why id rather have a Disciplined dog over a motivated dog.
I know of 2, American and German. I Have and like the German line, they are heavier but good weight, darker, and a block of a head. States rotties have longer snouts. German line I believe is closer to their working roots then the American. I breed them for myself. I give away some to families who still work the land around me, after I pick the ones I want to keep. This summer will be my 4th lot, in 15 years or so. I think the rotties German and American certain lines mine being one, are the best all around breed. Family, Work, guard, hunting, bitework whatever they can do it all, and work extremely well in packs.
American show line GSD's are all shot to hell. Shittily bred. Terrible back and hips. Not worth the worry and the heart-break. Only straight-backed, working GSD's from West Germany. That's where I'm getting mine from.
al these powerful dogs like Rottweilers and pitbulls need to be banned. why would you want a dog like this.. oen that mauls maims and disfugres adults and children constantly. psychopaths. i wish these kiler machines killed and mauled their owners instead of innocent people.
Those American types look all screwed up & structurally weak, they took a perfectly sound creation & messed it up, it’s the dogs that suffer these idiots stupid, ignorant decision.
This has to be one of the most poorly done videos on the German Shepherd Dog I have ever seen in my 40 years in the breed. The photos are wrong in most cases, some of the photos were used without permission and, I swear, they used the worst photos they could find. The computer generated voice is absolutely awful and its pronunciation of the German words is pitiful. Don't bother watching. You will learn nothing.
the working sheperts why the line off show is not naturelle german sheperts stoot alway right up i dont now why they did that they have a lot off prblems in the hips
The best rottie is my rottie. He's not super huge but he's left me seeing stars when ill timed kiss on the head leads to me head butting a skull that is like a mace. And God forbid he lays on top of me when I'm laying on the couch. Dog feels like another human, or like he's filled with cannon balls. When they say rotties love their owners, that is not a joke. Because my boy is clingier than wet paint. If I sleep, he has to sleep with me. If I stop walking while he's following me, he tries to sit between my legs like a military dog. I've lost track of the number of times he's almost tripped me. I swear one day I'm gonna start walking and end up galloping across the yard on my dog. But for all his quirks, God I love him. That boy is a true companion. I've had 4 rotts in 25 years and every last one of them was to die for. Best breed ever, man's best friend perfected, and just about the best lifeform on this planet.
I have an imported Czech shepherd who’s drives are on another level. My other Shepherd comes from DDR/Czech lines. These dogs need a job but if you can provide them a brisk walk with obedience they are superior than all the shepherds on this list. These shepherd are naturals in the sport of shutzhund or IPO. Dogs in Europe must be titled to be breed which is another big difference between American shepherds and shepherds from Europe. American shepherds are fear biters and have zero hardness in regards to nerves. I wouldn’t recommend a American shepherd for a plethora of reasons, but mainly there is no oversight on the breedings.
