I had an AKC black Germany shepherd that was unbelievable . He understood and obeyed every word I said . He once ( I know you won't believe me ) eat the wire holding the chain link fence to the pole from his pen and was sitting on the front porch waiting for me when I got home from work, never leaving the yard. I think of him most everyday and will never forget him. He passed in 2009 at 12 years old. If you want a beautiful dog this is it.

I am not sure why breeders found the sloped back and/or banana appealing to begin with. The straighter back on the DDR shepherd not only looks better, it also looks healthier, stronger, and more natural.

Cause the expo line needs to fit the step of the obese human who wants not to be active with the dog . Working breeds are hyper Active , by design and they trot got wider step, so you must be fast on legs to walk the pack on Rhythm. Fits my training . .

the german shepherd breed standard is not for aesthetics. it is for working ability. angulation allows german shepherds to trot more efficiently and conserves more energy. this is what makes them an amazing herding dog

My Czech line solid black shepherd passed away last year. He was 12 years old and 45 kilos. That dog could run all day. We would go to the beach andhe would swim for hours. He was straight back. His hips were almost taller then his shoulders. I have never seen a more impressive specimen. He was my boy and is deeply missed.

@commonsensicle2231 3 года назад
@@judyandrews6233 Don't really have a type, just make sure they come from a reputable breeder. Incidentally weve always had bitch es But everyone of them is different, Firstly we had Kit a very light coloured one who was brilliant with us, but took time to get to take to other folk. The next was Kelly who was bigger than most males but laid back and loved everyone .Then we had Kit (the shit) she worshipped us but hated everyone else. And now we have Zest who loves everyone. As I say they all have been well brought up acclimatised to folk from a very early age, but all with totally different temperaments. The most important thing about GSD's is that they are extremely loyal and literally adore you. It can be difficult at times to cope with the attention, with other things going on your life, but well worth the effort. Also ours have never wandered they watch out for you all the time, not like the majority of breeds which if you leave them off the leash sometimes run off. Summing up we've had a wonderful life with ours and would recommend the breed to anyone especially anyone who enjoys an active lifestyle. Best of luck.

I have owned 2 GSD , Both American, with one of Hungrian liniage and one from Germany, I did not get them for working or show, just as pets and personal protetion. You will never find a better dog , Loyal, loving, and very protective. I allways thought of my dog as a child, until one day when a person put their hand inside our van, She went balistic, and bit the person. He knew that it was his fault, That was her teritory, From that day on I knew I had a real protective dog and treated her as such. Never underestimate a GSD, You may pay for it in blood..Do not get me wrong, they are not agressive unless provoked, Best dogs ever, No comparison.

I lost my beloved GSD Greta last year after 9.5 years of pure friendship. I just wanted everyone to know that she was the best and I still haven’t gotten over her passing. I was never really huge on bloodlines, but always liked the German lines over American. I always looked for squared over sloped hind quarters, to me they looked stronger and more work oriented. To me the sloped hind quarters told me, that there may be potential back problems and the lower setting hind quarters meant, the bones were maybe smaller and prone to damage. I don't necessarily look for size, but proportion and a more squared hind end. That always felt right to me

I raised German Shepherds in the 1980’s when I worked for the Texas Dog Academy. It was well known then that the AKC was only interested in confirmation (what the dog looked like), and not interested in the dogs intelligence or temperament. The German dogs were bred for temperament and intelligence. If you want a GSD, get one as close to German lineage as you can.

It took only 15 minutes to teach my GSD Lance to sit, stay, come and heel. GSD's have been man's closest disciplined companions for so many years that obedience to a good owner is foremost to them, thus they are the easiest dogs to train obedience basics. I even trained Lance to retrieve and run blinds just like a field trial retriever. GSD's are much smarter than retrievers and learn much quicker.

My boy Gabe is 50% SV, 25% DDR, 25% Czech and I think he's just about the most perfect mix I've ever seen. My father was the master trainer and commander for the sheriff's office K-9 unit for most of my youth, and Gabe was his final non K-9 dog. He never wanted to train an aggressive dog again; he said it stole something from their soul. When Gabe was two, my father died and I took in Gabe like a little brother. Gabe's brother is named Ace, and he went to Matt Cameron (drummer for Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog...) so I'm just two degrees of separation away from my favorite band. He's prevented a housefire, saved three lives (one with about 10 minutes to spare), he adores children, cuddles kittens, let's baby chickens pick at him, and I've even seen him touch noses with a chipmunk. I've also seen him stalked and taunted for weeks by three coyotes. When the fight finally came, they left scat on one of his tennis balls a few days prior, as like a declaration of war, and it pissed Gabe of worse than I've ever seen him. Then, they waited for him at the bottom of our porch steps one night because they knew i always let him out to pee at around 10pm and they ambushed him. They weren't even afraid that I was standing there; these were the most brazen coyotes I've ever seen. The fight lasted maybe eight seconds. The first coyote's larynx was crushed; it was bleeding from the neck, gurgling, and crying. Gabe had also been trampling it the entire time that he attacked it and when he was chewing off the second one's face-it's entire head somehow ended up inside Gabe's mouth and he was rattling it like a paint shaker at a hardware store, his serrated teeth were like a Sawzall. God it was brutal. The second coyote had a flap of skin hanging off its face when Gabe let go of its head, and i wouldn't be surprised if it had a broken jaw or maybe even a skull fracture. On borrowed time, the two maimed coyotes managed to hobble away when the third one decided he didn't want to die and ran for his life, causing Gabe to instinctively take off after him for a ways, but coyotes are so much faster than GSDs, the chase didn't last long. Gabe came up onto the porch while I was standing there, stunned, trying to figure out what just happened. Thirty seconds earlier we were both on the couch. Gabe was snoring with his head in my lap, and I was struggling to stay awake. I could still hear the two coyotes he mauled crying in the distance when Gabe bumped my leg demanding butt scratches as reward for protecting his pack. He was smiling at me with his lazy tongue hanging to one side and coyote fur stuck in the corner of his mouth. I was so proud of him. Coyotes don't mess around, and when they show up at your porch and don't show fear, it means they see you as prey. He did exactly what his genetics told him to do. About three weeks ago, I was unaware that some stranger with two vicious dogs was trespassing on our property. It was dinner time, so I left the slider open like always to let Gabe out to pee in the forest behind our house and let himself back in. About a minute later, I heard a dog fight break out. I could tell by the sound that it was Gabe vs. Two dogs, it was like two Britney Spears songs on an alarm clock mixed with the Black Album on a full arena sound system. Each dog sounded like it was about 40 pounds (Gabe is 100). I got my shoes on and started running for the forest when I heard the fight, and as I crossed the lawn, I heard a man yelling and screaming at Gabe, so I started yelling for him to stop because he was trespassing and of he hurt my dog I was going to hurt him back worse. The man stopped yelling and his dogs stopped attacking and I heard him run off. Gabe hobbled out of the treeline. He was walking like he'd just been hit by a car. I thought about running the man down, but I knew that if I did and so much as laid a finger on him, I'd go to jail for assault. And my little brother needed me. To wrap it up-the man used a club and bludgeoned Gabe. Gabe had a few superficial scratches from when they other dogs tried to bite him but they didn't draw blood, so I couldn't figure out why he was so badly hurt until I paid attention to his cognition. His blows were primarily focused on Gabe's ears, which are a bunch of nerves, easily broken cartilage, and a solid strike can instantly kill a dog. The vet said another blow or two and Gabe would have either died instantly if he were lucky. If he were unlucky, he would start having strokes and seizures until he was either euthanized or died. Fortunately, he has no skull fractures and only some concussions. He had vertigo and nausea for two days, for four days he yelped and cowered away when I barely touched his head, and for ten days he kept acting like he had done something bad and I was going to hit him. He turns nine on August 12th, and that coward is the first person in Gabe's entire life to ever hit him. The anger and sadness that I felt for what he did to Gabe nearly ripped me in two. Some humans have no humanity. But remember: the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture act was signed into law in 2019, giving animals constitutionally-protected rights and every state and county has their own laws. Familiarize yourselves with he PACT Act, your state, and county laws against animal abuse. NJ is about to sign a bill that appoints abused animals attorneys in court and maximum sentences of life in prison for neglecting an animal to death. Report every animal abuser, no matter who they are. This kind of stuff has been going on for far too long, and now the FBI is helping put an end to it. Be a Karen for the ones that suffer silently and love unconditionally.

I have been wanting to get a GSD working line,what your views on their immunity against disease like Parvo virus and how did you prevent it with your dogs over the years
@WoodyStickman
@WoodyStickman Год назад
@DEB ⚡ diligence. Watch your dog as it ages; they communicate with body language, eye contact, and the speed of their respiration. Fortunately, I've never had to deal with Parvo, but he has had some injuries and times when he ate something gross or something and caught a sickness. But the biggest things are: - one-on-one attention to strengthen the human soak bond - NEVER tease, hit, or scream at the dog on anger. They are always listening, and they have been bred to have a dressier to serve their owners and make them happy. Plus, they are so intelligent that they know when they are being teased and they will hold grudges. I had a friend five years back who teased my dog once when I wasn't stupid to stop it. My dog never respected him ever again, didn't listen to him, and when he looked at him, he had this expression like, "Hi, dumbass. I'm a one-hundred pound predator capable of taking down a 300lb man. I can rip your arm off on a layer of seconds. You weigh 165 and are an asshole. Keep pushing, and you might live long enough to start crying." - They have *ridiculously* high pain tolerance compared to humans and most other dogs (even the western show lines with sloped hips), so if your dog ever yelps in pain while they're playing, or is limping or something just not acting right, take the time to check them out and get them to the vet. My dog was impaired by stick once when he was chasing a ball. He came back with the ball, tail wagging, a huge smile on his face, and a hole the size of a quarter pouring blood from his flank, and he still wanted to play. It was like he didn't even feel it. They are bred to take multiple gunshot, stab wounds, beatings from sick people, extreme cold, and concussion blasts from explosions, then get right back up again and keep working. - Diet is everything. I'm partial to Science Diet Large Breed, which I'll mix a raw egg with to his foot and sometimes toss in a raw chicken drumstick. - Start supplementing for joint issues really (3 or 4 years old). It adds up when they turn into a senior like mine. He's nine now, and aside from slowing down a little because of his aging hips, most people think he's no older than seven. - If you purchase from a breeder, make eye they have the complete records of the dame and sire that the litter came from-dental records, no history of hip dysplasia or cognitive issues, and a good breeder won't even let you see the dog until it's 8 weeks old because they are properly socializing them to prevent them from become a liability for you in the future. - Any love you give them, they'll give it right back tenfold. - Mine needed at least 8 hours of play and cognitive exercise every single day until he was almost seven years old. They are a full-time job when they are young, so be prepared, but they are the best personal trainers money can buy. It's why you'll never see an overweight K-9 officer. It's not easy chasing a top-shelf dog all over. - When they are scared or nervous (vet appointments, something happened that frightened them, don't pass it off as the dog being a whimp. Everything is different for them: bathtubs are loud, slippery, and confined. Vets smell like other animals and that can make them nervous, so sooth them with petting and forehead to forehead soft, gentle talk. - Never hit them. It hit them. It ruins them, and they will begin to fear you. Make your dog know that it's an important part of your family and that you would never hurt him. - They will become what you make them and they can smell your emotions. If you're mad at them, they know, and they will be afraid. Try to look at your own frustration and anger and remind yourself-this is a dog, all he wants to do is make me happy, and he is trying. He made a mistake because nothing is perfect, and never be too proud to seek advice from a professional trainer if you need it. Owning a high-end dog like a GSD is a lot of work and it can wear you down if you work and are away from home a lot because when you come home, that dog is dying his favorite human in the world for the first time in what seemed like forever and they will want your attention and play. Give it to them, and it will only build on the love that your dog already has for you. - And patience, patience, patience. They will test you because they are so smart and they are trying to figure out their boundaries. Positive reinforcement is the answer. Reward the good behavior, ignore the bad. - And enjoy then while they last. The cruel reality of the universe is that a dog's life is fleeting. They're gone before you know it, and the pain is just as bad as losing a human. Honor the dog by continuing on with your head up. The last thing that dog would ever want was to hurt you, and though your heart will hurt for a long time, honor the dog by remembering the good-the times they made you laugh, the times when they got food stuck to their face, the times the dropped a slobbery tennis ball in your face while you were sleeping and they wanted to play. Those moments are precious and priceless, and when the dog is gone, you will beg a lead to have just a few more seconds with them. - in the end, is love, patience, and positive reinforcement that nature a good dog. Mine let's toddlers ride on his back, he protects chickens he could kill in a single bite, but he also killed two coyotes in 6 seconds one night when they came up on out porch to challenge him. They are a teddy bear with a machine gun, and they will die for you without hesitation.

Show dog breeders should Research pelvic dysplasia to see What kind of PAIN they breed into these poor Dogs AND if THAT doesn't change their attitude toward the GSD, then THEY should be made to suffer the same pain and discomfort their Dogs go through as they get older. I had a Rescue GSD from the age of 3(he was in the rescue since he was 9 months old!!!). He started to suffer in his last 3 years, steadily getting worse. He suffered until 'I' couldn't deal with it. I've trained other dog breeds but this dog has been the easiest to train. He's still working on biting though he just can't seem to help himself.
@maxtaylor12

Currently going through the same with my 8 week old pup! How did you get over the biting and nibbling other than just telling them no and having them play with a chew toy instead? Did yours grow out of it?

@@maxtaylor12 He did grow out of it. He did learn the power of his bite and what is and isn't acceptable. Remember he's a dog so basic thing if he is biting too much or too hard refuse to play with him for a short time. If he continues remove yourself from him. Pups learn from biting so by doing this you're showing him he's gone too far. He will still play bite but you will notice the pressure he uses will go down more and more over the months. My GSD is now 2. Biting isn't an issue. Besides being overly protective he's a great dog.

@@jenniferfloyd6540 For off leash I used a training collar. I understand people are against the shock method but the buzz method works. It's painless almost like his clicker. The buzz does not shock him it just vibrates. It also had a sound option both work. When he didn't listen he went back to leash. It's a matter of respect and discipline. He needs to know it's your way or he loses his privilege. This is time consuming but stay persistent and he will adjust. Forgot use a reward system. Rubber ball usually does the trick but for my GSD I use a frisbee.

@@maxtaylor12 [From "Taming Mouth Monsters" by Stu Tarlowe © 2007 Originally published in Paw Prints] Pups tend to be “mouthy”; it’s a natural stage they go through and most outgrow it by 6 months or so. But it’s misinterpretation of this phase that makes a lot of people lose patience and give up, mistaking a normally-developing pup for an incorrigible “biter”; the poor puppy winds up in a shelter wondering what he did wrong. If a pup circles you like a little shark and nips at your ankles or your trouser legs as you walk, it’s reacting to the motion and exhibiting prey drive, which is natural and can be harnessed constructively in more advanced training. Such behavior is more prevalent in the herding breeds; that’s how they get sheep, cattle etc. to do their bidding. But such nipping at people is hardly acceptable, and to stop it you need to offer the dog something else to go after. A ball on a string works well, or a tug-toy, or even a towel or rag that you use as a tug. By the way, when a pup is teething, offering it a towel soaked in water and then frozen can offer lots of relief. There’s even a “DeLuxe” version of this, in which you soak the towel in chicken broth before freezing! When a pup starts getting mouthy with your hand, pulling your hand away is really the last thing you want to do. It triggers the same kind of drive as running away from a dog. And we all should know that there’s no running away from a dog! The act of running away makes the dog see you as prey, and what dogs do with prey is chase it, run it down and catch it. There are critters that can outrun a dog, but a human is not one of them! When a dog is chasing you, you have to resist the impulse to flee, and instead force yourself to stand still. It’s tough to train yourself to override a basic survival instinct, but sometimes the best move is a counter-intuitive one. I hope all of you who have kids have taught them that, should they encounter a dog running loose, unless they can put some kind of barrier between themselves and the dog, they must not run but should instead stand still, with their arms at their sides. This will cause most dogs to lose interest in the chase. So, just as experienced drivers know that when their car starts to skid, they must fight the impulse to apply the brakes, and just as pilots know that when the plane starts to stall they have to fight the impulse to pull back on the stick, but instead push it forward, when a pup starts chewing on your hand, you have to resist the urge to pull your hand back. It’s rapidly trying to pull your hand away that turns gentle “mouthing” into a bite. I’m convinced that many of the so-called “dog bites” reported each year (and which cause many pups to be abandoned or to wind up in shelters) are not the result of aggression or dominance issues, which actually occur much less frequently in pups (and which are topics for another discussion), but started out with a dog simply being mouthy. The preferred way of disciplining a dog and teaching it that mouthing is not always appropriate is to use your other hand to grab the pup by the scruff of its neck, administering a correction just like what the pup’s mother would do, and saying “No!” or “Bad!” or “Phooey!” until it releases its hold. You need to do this firmly enough for the dog to understand that you’re not just playing, which would of course only encourage it. When doing this, with one hand in the dog’s mouth and the other grabbing its neck, I’m always reminded of a story told by big-game hunter and writer Robert Ruark, of how he was attacked by a leopard and found his gun had jammed. Ruark matter-of-factly described how he offered the leopard his left arm to chew on while, with his right arm, he used the stock of his rifle to bash the big cat’s head in! [But that’s a far cry from dealing with your little canine “mouth-monster”, so please try to refrain from such extremely violent - and irrevocable - actions. -The Editor] If grabbing the dog by the scruff doesn’t get immediate compliance, another technique to get the dog to release your hand (and to discourage it from mouthing you) is to actually push your hand further into its mouth. Another is to grab the dog’s lip and pinch or twist until it yelps. Yet another is to press your thumb into the space between the dog’s two bottom front canine teeth; a dog cannot close its mouth when you do this. All these methods teach the dog that mouthing your hand results in discomfort. It also helps if you yelp in pain the way a dog does! A dog being mouthy is not intending to hurt you, so if you give a YELP! you are communicating, in a way that the dog understands very well, that you’re being hurt. I actually like putting my hand in my dog’s mouth and playing that way, but only after my dog has learned the limits and understands that only my hands are fair game for such play, and only when I say so. Actually, putting my hand in my dog’s mouth can be a very intimate gesture, and I certainly wouldn’t want him being that intimate with anybody else! One place to get lots more information on puppy chewing and biting is in the training articles section of www.leerburg.com.

Many years ago there was only a long haired or short haired version of a German Shepherd - or Alsatian as they are known in the UK. In all cases the dog had a straight back - but the long haired version tended to have a calmer disposition and were not quite so instinctually so protective. In most cases they were all known as pretty healthy dogs, with a life span of around 12 ish years. 2022 - This wonderful breed of dog has been bred for some years to have a slopping spine and to come in different colours. 3 of my close friends have had 2 well bred (Crufts parentage) Alsatians from 8 weeks old - and one came as a rescue, aged approx. 2-3 years. In all cases, these gorgeous dogs were or became reliably well trained, safe with children, strange dogs and strangers (barked alot!) and undoubtable ALL would have defended their owners if the need arose. Sadly all 3 dogs developed spinal / hip problems so severely by aged 8-9, that they had to be euthanised. So sad. Please could someone explain why the USA and the UK continue to breed spinal defects into todays Alsatian, whatever their coat???

His Dad was a working City of London Police Dog and his Grandad a retired Police Dog. I particularly liked the pedigree name of his Grandmother, Shadowsquad Dancing Eyes! He was loyal, very protective of me but loved everyone including other animals and he was in love with next door's cat, Sarah. The only cat he'd allow in our garden. He was very easy to train and he knew voice and hand commands. I even sent my Mum out on a long walk, didn't know where she was going. 30 minutes later I went out with Sam and he tracked her all the way and found her. You can still find some registered GSD breeders that stick to the strict standards if you look long enough and are willing to fork over some cash. I would definitely stay away from the sloped back. My current GSD is named "Rick James" because he got into a bottle of dog aspirin and ate the entire bottle! It did not even phase him....so, Rick James became his name since, Cocaine is a hell of a drug! Plus, I love hearing people call for my dog. I can tell by their reaction if they pass the "cool test" some get it and some don't. My last GSD was named "Jerry Lee!" You have to be a fan of the Dave Chappell show to really understand the humor behind his name.

My first and only dog is a Husky who has the body shape and features of a GSD. He's Husky dominant which is apparent with his coat being mostly black and white but he's got all the looks of a GSD... I'm not being biased when I say he is one handsome mutt.
@TyfoiD75

I would say that the GSD is the smartest dog there is, and cute to the boot. Mine has a little huskydna from fathers side, mother is pure. I am hoping that with that mix, we wont have issues with legs, as the mothers sister had to b put down as the hind legs gave up :/

Here are the real 5 different types of German Shepherd dogs: 1. The beautiful GSD. 2. The fantastic friend GSD. 3. The magnificent GSD. 4. The brilliant GSD. 5. The brave and loyal GSD. Oh wait, I made a mistake. These aren't 5 different types of German Shepherd dogs, the is every GSD. They all have these characteristics.

Having had 4 GSDs and 2 Shiloh Shepherds, I love the breed but wouldn't pay a dime for one of those slope-backed, angulated so-called show dogs. Search under "Old-fashioned, oversized GSDs" and you'll find plenty of breeders producing GSDs the way they used to be.

@xvalkyra
@xvalkyra 2 года назад
dear god, PLEASE do not encourage people to buy “straight back” german shepherds. no ethical breeder uses that term because they simply don’t exist. angulation is extremely necessary in the breed because it allows german shepherds to trot easily and efficiently, making them great herding living fence dogs
@stutarlowe4552
@stutarlowe4552 2 года назад
@@kylohtheshepherd I've had two Shiloh Shepherds, and they were great dogs. But that was back when Shilohs included smooth coats; nowadays I've seen only plush coated Shilohs, which I don't care for. And I seriously doubt any Shiloh breeder would countenance breeding a Shiloh with anything but another Shiloh; that would probably be a violation of your agreement with the breeder. Don't have an agreement with the breeder? Then you may not have a genuine ISSR Shiloh Shepherd; unfortunately, lots of breeders throw that name around.
@stutarlowe4552
@stutarlowe4552 Год назад
@@xvalkyra I think you have it exactly backwards. The "straight-backed," "old-fashioned" structure reflects the way the breed was envisioned by Capt. Max von Stephanitz, and enabled the dog to have that smooth, effortless trot that should be characteristic of the breed (and was part of the breed standard developed by von Stephanitz). Remember that von Stephanitz said "German Shepherd Dog breeding is working dog breeding or it is not German Shepherd Dog breeding," meaning he had no use for dogs bred strictly for show (which unfortunately describes the over-angulated structure that characterizes the "modern" GSD). BTW, I could name any number of breeders of such "old-fashioned" GSDs whose ethics are unassailable.

Showline type GSD is very bad for the dog. They usually suffer from hip problems. Making them suffer. If you get one be sure to check their angle on their back. They should straight and not angled down on their back. Be sure to check the dogs at the vet or the kennel that they don’t suffer from bad hips gene. Correct me if I’m wrong.

there is nothing wrong with show line german shepherds. their angulation is necessary for their original purpose. angulation allows them to trot easily and efficiently, and makes it easier to keep stamina for herding for long periods of time

My female is a Czechoslovakian bread with Western working . That is her picture as my avatar. I have had a few GSD's in my life (im 58) and she is by far the best one. My vet even recommended breeding her. I kept her form getting pregnant for 5 years. I was sick when she went into heat, and and a new King GSD had moved in down the street and he was not to be denied. I have a security camera and I had a 7 ' fence around a 1/4 acre because she would just go right over a 5' fence like it wasnt even there. This guy was a giant, a good 140 lb, and he got in by flipping up the latch on the gate, he was too big to jump or climb. I woke up and saw him inside, and decided to let her have them they turned out gorgeous and she had 11, 2 died. I sold their rest and kept 2 that I had bonded with, Unfortunately the day the King got her, he got hit by a car after I kicked him out and died on the road, I kept 2, and had to talk one back because I found out they were not taking care of it as per the agreement we had. One of the pups was 110 lbs at 11 months and looked just like his mom. I kept a sable and black and the big one was black and sable-ish tan. He was beautiful. Unfortunately the one I took back was very curious and could clear 6' of fence from a sitting position, and would find any weak point in the fence. He ripped part of the fence down and three of them got out and ended up in the town 15 miles away. Thankfully Rudy didn't follow them for some reason and the mom was chipped. I got 2 of the three back, and drove around for 3 weeks chasing a ghost/ He was a great gentle guy and someone must have decide to adopt him. I still check the lost dog pages all the time, that was Jan 17 of this year. I now have a 9 'fence because Tejano, can also climb fences. trees and bushes. It was a lot of work to contain him. Best dogs ever. and worth it. I won't give up on the other one. He knows what my truck sounds like so i drive around in it looking for him. Maybe one day...
