Welcome aboard! We are Chris and Marissa Neely, the crew of our 1979 Cheoy Lee 41, Avocet. We bought Avocet in 2018 as newly weds, fresh out of college with a small budget and a dream to explore what lies beyond the horizon. This channel shares the details of our renovations, redesigns, and refits while we simultaneously juggle our respective media businesses offscreen to keep this whole operation afloat. We are excited to announce as of 2022 we are casting off for our grand adventure!

well until they do something about homelessness what does any state expect. Its technically illegal to live in any trailer in a back yard but in my somewhat rural town in California many do! Some are just extended family with no place to go. AND the jobs here are part time but full time workers even with the the new minimum wage at $16 cant afford any place to live. And minimal at that because of price gouging! its not inflation. Rat trap apartments went from $600 or so studios to $2000 yes two thousand. Thats more than 3 times and min wage only doubled??? Milk and eggs are $8 per gallon and a dozen in my town??!! that was covid prices! Never changed! They just need to make rules. We put in water, sewer, electricity for our trailer because its over by a workshop I use for sewing across the acre lot. Its my bathroom but Ive slept in it during fires as the best sealed windows. And its overflow for family visiting. They approved up to 4 granny cottages for our area depending on lot size. Everyone is laughing. The rich homes in the hills dont want rentals in their back yards! The people in town their homes are rom 20s, 40s etc. and they dont have enough bank value to get one construction loan let alone 4???! It costs $250K to build a granny cottage! The homes are worth less than $200K? And at that price you'd never break even on monthly mortgage due either!
Yeah, the winds here have definitely been horrendous and relentless this last couple of years. I've lived here in M.B. for 25 years and never remember such weather. You should be proud of your abilities as sailors. Shows why blue water sailing is a young person's passtime.
If you showed it in action longer, could’ve actually seen something. Especially with the level. The video is not long enough on the level to really notice it.
Feel free to read the numerous publications I’ve written for Sailing Magazine, SAIL magazine, Good Old Boat etc that discuss this product and products like it. Sailed well over 5,000 nm and wouldby think of leaving the dock without a roll reducer. It makes unbearable anchorages a tad more bearable.
How is it not good for “actual” sailors? We have cruised all of California, sea of Cortez and mainland Mexico using this and it has helped with rolly anchorages tremendously.
Thank you so much for this video! This is just what I was looking for. First, I just want to clarify what I saw in your video regarding your installation. You teed the saltwater feed from an existing line and did not have to use a dedicated thruhull/seacock. You installed a 20-micron pre-filter in addition to the 5-micron pre-filter, which is what I would want to do for the exact same reasons you specified. Second, I want to ensure that my understanding of the Rainman unit is correct. One of the great appeals to me of the Rainman is that there isn’t a requirement for an initial “boost pump” because the unit is self-priming to 6 feet. I didn’t see you install one either. It seems that Rainman markets their watermakers as using just the 5-micron pre-filter. So, having said all that, I have a couple of questions regarding your installation, if I may. 1) Have you had any issues with the pressure pump pulling the seawater through both of the pre-filters (not due to clogging)? 2) Is there anything about the installation that you would change after having lived with it for a while? Thank you so much for any insights you might be able to share!
There are many ways to pursue personal development, what's important is that you do it conscessly. Impressed with your new found "Realizations" keep it up. ❤
We have lived in San Luis Obispo county 40+ years & have never seen Morro Bay that rough! I guess we'll have to drive over sometime during winter storms. Glad to see how well you handled all of the difficulty. Well done. At least Morro Bay is a better harbor than either San Luis Bay or San Simeon. Either of those would have been much worse. (I feel.)
Ahoy Dennis! Yes, winter 2022/23 was definitely something of an anomaly with its brutalness. Happy that we made it out unscathed with stories to tell :) fair winds!
It's funny to be watching your sailing videos, from my own sailboat which I was inspired to buy after watching SV Prism videos. I had seen a few sailing channels but it was the Hans Christien 33T that made me really fall in love sailboats and channels like yours that made me want to sail. So thanks to Avocet and Prism for making me leave dry land for a life on the water and giving up a 30 year IT career to work in a marine store just so I could learn more about boats.
Great video, thank you. Regarding your AC vs DC comment, this does not perform the efficiently much, rather AC makes more sens on larger system and DC on smaller. For anyone in the process of choosing av water maker, I recommend doing the necessary research, just as you have done. Still I would like to clarify, that generally you have four parameters you can balance to your situation: Production rate (how fast do you need to produce water), energy efficiency (how many ah/wh does I take to produce a certain amount of water), powering method (AC, DC, dedicated engine, main engine) and finally price of the system, that will be influenced greatly by the other three parameters. As an example if you run a generator regularly, you could choose a high output AC powered water maker with low efficiency at a reasonable price. On the other end if you want to run it from a limited source of renewable energy, you might choose an efficient unit with energy recovery and run it from DC power. Your water maker is somewhere in between, as it is low output and does not have energy recovery, and as such would be suitable for a situation where you have a decent amount of solar and/or low water consumption. A system with energy recovery would make the same amount of water for 1/3 to 1/2 the power consumption (i.e. a Schenker 30lph would draw around 10A), but the unit might be double the price to purchase. Happy sailing⛵
Must have just missed you! PV is such a special place, we absolutely love it down there…..on a quest to try all the “best” taco shops in old town, Don Chavas remains our fave. Cheers,
Good work Chris 👍🏼 I really liked your idea of using tubing and pins for the solar panels. I added strips of penetrating epoxied Luan in my divinicell stringers for the light and speaker mounts as well as the handholds to give the screws something to bite into other than glass which strips easier. I also used poly pipe as the conduit runs for the cabling. I have a background in Army Communications and work experience as an offshore Marine Electrician/ET so while I’m great with the power & stuff that beeps I had never worked with glass. The technological advancement in panel manufacturing has really aided DIYers pull off projects with little to no experience, combined with youtube videos it’s a win-win.
Paul! You are amazing. We hope you liked the latest video, and wanted to extend this link to you as well. This is our LATEST video that is only available to Patreon at the moment... and now to you (and whoever cares to read this comment I suppose haha!) Stay safe out there. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ahSE8sb_U9w.html
Another great example of a Rocna Vulcan doing its job. After this video I have no doubt what I am getting to upgrading my ground tackle. What weight anchor are you using? My boat is just 30 foot LOA and I am looking to go oversized and thinking the Vulcan 15kg, 33lb
We love this anchor - so SO much! Ours is 55 pounds which is technically just a tad oversized for our boat (41 feet) but honestly a 60 pounder would be nice. Highly recommend it!
If you have trouble with fuel starvation on your Perkins, check the strainer in your fuel tank. It could be partially clogged. A hidden gremlin, to be sure.
Definitely a hidden gremlin, but we just refinished our tanks so nothing to clog the strainer. This wasn't a starvation issue, it was an injection fuel pump failure and wasn't the end of the woes! We actually write about it more here if you're interested: www.svavocet.com/2023/08/09/leaving-la-cruz/
Looks so wonderful doesn't it? It's not. Extremely complex variety of systems and details. Things break all the time. Nothing is square. Access is always limited by tight spaces, you have to move something to get to something all the time. Maddening. It will all eventually drive you bonkers. Can't shower inside because of moisture and mildew. Constant corrosion from salt air. It just goes on and on.
I bet you’re fun at parties. It’s not that complex if you have a brain. Access is not always limited, and you definitely do not need to move something to get to something “all the time”. We shower inside all the time, and have never had an issue with moisture or mildew because it’s properly ventilated. What a strange, negative comment. Have fun being the stick in the mud you angry, angry man.
Most of Catalina got too civilized like the whole coast of California. The authorities want revenue. Glad I was able to anchor around before. Used to be paradise. It was wonderful.
Any travel in Mexico is dangerous. Just be careful..the bad guys have guns..especially with pretty ladies. Again, don't trust anyone without validation. Try the Long Bar.. Ladies..wear long pants..
