Well, you CAN kill a perkins, but not without a lot of effort! The old perkins engines are appreciated because they are generally reliable and low tech...a good idea in remote places. And Callifornia, RUN!
This video was one of those you could keep watching if it was much longer, and not even know it. The music and footage was spot on for placing the mood. Top notch! Thank You
I love Morro Bay but have never experienced it in stormy weather, I've been lucky with calm and sunshine. The footage you captured of the storm conditions is WILD!
Yeah, the winds here have definitely been horrendous and relentless this last couple of years. I've lived here in M.B. for 25 years and never remember such weather. You should be proud of your abilities as sailors. Shows why blue water sailing is a young person's passtime.
Love Marissa's quote abot sailing not being all about sunshine and bikini's. No truer words were ever spoken. Glad you made through the storms and grounding. Pretty stressful situation but you two handled it well.
I’m putting my Endeavour 40 on the hook tomorrow after two years at the marina and I needed this video more than you know. Y’all are so awesome, adventurous, and knowledgeable. Thank you for the great content!
Great episode! Makes all your Morro Bay stories make sense and come alive. Also love the permanently attached chain hook on the windlass, I will implement that on Sitka.
Sorry Morro bay was so unkind to you guys. We have the wind swell and swing tides that make it rough. There are sail boats that have been tied up in Morro bay harbor for a long time. Last year winter storm played havoc for everyone. Luckily it sounded like you survived running aground without any damage. Hope some day you make it back so we can meet up for beers and chowder at Dock Side.
The Moro Bay Bar is one of the most dangerous on the west coast. Even in the best conditions, you really have to time your crossing to avoid getting into trouble with the harbor break. In these conditions, its deadly! Even in gale force conditions outside, boats have been known to stay well offshore for days until conditions allow a safe entrance
Pretty sure I saw your boat when you ran aground. I was out for a paddle after the storm (always a nice day here) and thought "this is really cool, I haven't seen ghetto type dry dock for years here". Figured you were doing some bottom work and not bothering with dry dock. Used to be pretty common practice in Morro Bay back when it was more rustic. Glad you got off OK. I do enjoy your videos. Sorry I didn't stop and say Hi!
.... well to say you were tested might be a little calm of a term .... glad the Perkins is a purring again .... good time for an impromptu hull inspection .... when you first showed the boats at the dock my sentiments were the same as yours Chris .. glad you were not at the dock ... that was brutal .... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger have fun be safe, save our oceans ....
If you have trouble with fuel starvation on your Perkins, check the strainer in your fuel tank. It could be partially clogged. A hidden gremlin, to be sure.
Definitely a hidden gremlin, but we just refinished our tanks so nothing to clog the strainer. This wasn't a starvation issue, it was an injection fuel pump failure and wasn't the end of the woes! We actually write about it more here if you're interested: www.svavocet.com/2023/08/09/leaving-la-cruz/
good video We live in Los Osos the back bay of Morro Bay .I've never seen the bay so rough! better you than me out on it. I get sick on Super Tankers & I use to Fix them.
We have lived in San Luis Obispo county 40+ years & have never seen Morro Bay that rough! I guess we'll have to drive over sometime during winter storms. Glad to see how well you handled all of the difficulty. Well done. At least Morro Bay is a better harbor than either San Luis Bay or San Simeon. Either of those would have been much worse. (I feel.)
Ahoy Dennis! Yes, winter 2022/23 was definitely something of an anomaly with its brutalness. Happy that we made it out unscathed with stories to tell :) fair winds!
I'm retired from the USACE Dredge Yaquina which maintains Morro Bay channel and bar. This was one of my favorite harbors to work and that's why I'm watching. Did you know that Morro Bay is the foggiest place on the coast?
If you want the injection pump to no longer fail and to lower your diesel consumption, as well as to protect the engine, I recommend that every couple of years, depending on evident use, you send the injectors to be cleaned and do their proper maintenance. When they have some type of obstruction, they force the injection pump to work forcefully, causing costly damage to the pump itself and the engine... happy day, a big hug from Venezuela, may God bless you always
dont feel to bad, i ran aground coming into morro bay back in the 90s in my lancer 36, i had to wait until high tode then she l floated loose , i have a 336 hunter down in club nautico in the Dom. Republic now, have a good time cruising around
Im a long time follower, Oh man i was there at the DOCK with my family when you guys were cleaning your boat and dingy, i thought i recognized you guys but wasn't sure, didn't want to be a wierdo calling your name. My wife had went down to the dock to get a closer look. You probly dont remember, but wow small world. Maybe next time ill get a cool hand shake and a selfie lol. Safe travels guys.
Yikes, glad you made it through okay! We just came out the other side of 3 days stuck on our mooring due to rain. Seas weren't too bad, but our kid was literally climbing up the walls!
What do you mean, "a lot of weather in this video?" Wasn't enough for my liking! I love the stormy weather and most sailing channels cut it short all the time and we really don't get to experience just how bad it is in a boat when the wind is howling and rain pelting down. But alas, I shall make do with the offering made, and admit it was a very enjoyable video to watch. Great video guys. Really enjoyed it!
I imagine! I have a few drone videos of the chaotic waves from that storm in Morro Bay on my channel, you’re welcome to use some of those shots in a future video! 😎
That was some pretty nasty weather! Glad to see you made the best of it. Nice seamanship using the kedge to pull you off the sand. I hope I never have to do that!
She’s sounds like a Perkins. My Perkins 6354 -4 has a bolt on the side of the injector pump . I bleed it with a pump on my wall that has two fuil filters . Super easy. The injector pump alway pushes it up to the injectors with out bleeding . But if you run it out of fuil . The air gets trapped in the line from the fuil tank to the mechanical pump and from there to the injection pump . Perkins is a cool engine to have .Trans Atlantic Diesel is my go to for any complex stuff like that pump .And they alway no what parts you need down to the gaskets .
TAD is usually a good source... but when the pump failed again we bought a new one in MX and they sent us the wrong one. It's a long, sad, story. type in "Perkins 4.108" on our website and you'll find the whole story. www.svavocet.com
Someday I want to buy a boat and go cruising...what intimidates me is all the knowledge required to address engine, shaft, electrical issues...How did you folks learn so much about all those things?
Hey guys! Dont be intimidated. Yes, there is a lot to learn BUT you are doing your due diligence now by watching videos to absorb all you can! Chris grew up in a sailing family, then he taught me how to sail and then I took the initiative to become a captain - which taught me a good amount. I would consider checking out some ASA courses if possible!
We have been down at vintage Marina on same dock that you where on and I just found your channel. Love it you guys have a great thing going keep it up! I love the content from Northern California and Huntington since we live in the mountains above Fresno. Hope to see you at the islands!!!
Another great example of a Rocna Vulcan doing its job. After this video I have no doubt what I am getting to upgrading my ground tackle. What weight anchor are you using? My boat is just 30 foot LOA and I am looking to go oversized and thinking the Vulcan 15kg, 33lb
We love this anchor - so SO much! Ours is 55 pounds which is technically just a tad oversized for our boat (41 feet) but honestly a 60 pounder would be nice. Highly recommend it!
This was a great video. It must have been stressful riding out the storms. Impressive how much you were able to accomplish at anchor. Crazy that you had to pay $60 per day to anchor. That would get old quick. I am guessing this was either February or March of last winter (?). Thank you for posting.
Great wind surfing footage! I’ve wondered about cost to moor there as I’m sure you two saw long neglected boats in Morro Bay. Some neglected boats in Morro Bay have been moored in place for more than a decade (or two…three…?). One example is the boat on camera-left starting at 11:15. They must be racking up the bills at $1.50/ft/day.
I imagine 1.50 per foot is for the transient boats and not for boats that have a mooring lease in the harbor. Mooring leases are typically 300ish dollars a month in Morro bay depending on the owner you are renting from.
Lol, must feel pretty good producing this from warm Mexico! We're at Cojo right now getting ready to go around to Sansimion tomorrow morning. No Moro for us! I'm not a fan of that place, as awesome as it is in a pinch when you really need some safeharbor.
when anchored, my boat would yaw left and right for about 120 degrees in 20 knots of wind, I'm not sure how she would behave in 35 knots. your boat looks pretty stable, pointing upward when anchored
Nice, but we want sunshine and bikinis! Good explanation about your choice of snubbers and the importance of not relying on the chain gypsy to hold the anchor chain. It isn't the wind that causes the problems, it is the waves with or without wind that puts shock loading on the anchor components. I've seen one anchor windless torn out of the deck by the wave loads and many broken chains, capstans, samson posts, cleats, and anchor ropes chafed through. I was sure glad you didn't have the wind and waves when you were aground, that pounds a boat to pieces in a few hours. Sail on!
Wow, where did you find that Perkins Vid footage. I am based in Fresno during the Summer…. Where in fresno did you have your fuel injection pump rebuilt.
We live in Shaver Lake when not aboard Avocet :) we shared the shop at the beginning of the video if you caught it - but the pump failed us again in Mexico where we got it rebuilt again - and even better. I wouldn’t recommend where we went in Fresno.
Love the videos, but they are a yr behind real time, so the disconnect makes them hard to watch. 😢 Will you catch them up to current possibly? Hate to be negative cause I love you guys, but I’m wanting videos of you jumping aboard in Rocky Point and heading out for another season! Just a thought. Cheers
Stoked you like the videos but there is no way we can catch them up to current while juggling full time jobs in the cinema and marketing world, and taking time to be present in life. RU-vid is not a business for us, it is just for fun. These videos take over 20 hours to edit. If you want to keep up with our journey and whereabouts check out our blog site which is only 1 month behind current www.svavocet.com 🤙 Cheers!
@@sailingavocet , I hope I didn’t hurt any feelings. I have followed you two since the beginning and find your videos awesome and real and I’m pulling for you both! I have found the same issue as a Patreon on some channels when we see things in real time, then go backwards so much to the RU-vid time and I’m already ahead. Guess it’s just an issue with the reality of RU-vid, work and real time as you said. Keep up the great work, you two are awesome and have accomplished great things already for such a young couple!
$75 a night!!? 40 years ago I broke down just outside of the bay when my prop hooked a bunch of seaweed and burned out the transmission before we could shut it down. There wasn't enough wind to sail so we were forced to stay there until the trans was fixed. It was free then. Morro bay didn't have much to offer then and when I revisited about 5 years ago it hadn't improved much. There's only one decent restaurant and it only serves breakfast.
Oh, you are referring to the yellow marble. I can see how that would be mistaken as a lemon head. Yes, we film and edit our own videos, we filmed this back in November and edited it about a month ago. Apologies if every shot is not at the forefront of our mind. If you would like to see what we have been up to since then, feel free to check out our blog site www.svavocet.com
If using a small glass marble in the cockpit, it would scare me. A small piece of round glass that could fall into a cockpit drain or end up in a bilge and clog the pump? Maybe you should use lemon heads, at least it’s sugar that would break down and not be a bigger problem.
We have moored in many marinas and anchored in many safe harbors that also must dredge (like Santa Cruz harbor, 24/7) and stand by the fact that this cost was not cheap. This is information boaters should know
