Are we certain that Solomon Linda didn't simply arrange and record an African folk song that's been around for who knows how long? It's not unheard of........
It was several years ago i learned that every 2000s song i loved had an "original" song going back sometimes to the 1800s. The money situation with this song, meh , won't make me wipe or feel sad or anything. I'm glad i is still with us, and i can hear it.

I don't believe the Tokens actually stole the song ! They tweaked it and made it their own ! Like Oh Black Betty by Rama Jamb , Stairway to heaven by Led Zep ! They took an average song and made it better !

I'm not sure the story is as sad as the title suggests. Let's put it this way: if they had released an identical version of "Mbube" in America, even with English lyrics, it would have been a flop, so the original creators of the song lost nothing. The final production of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" was a dramatic improvement over the original.
Too bad NO ONE could sing it as well as the Tokens, and that's why it became a super hit. I saw Pete Seeger do this song live at the Hollywood Bowl, it was just an OK song. The Tokens ALIVED it and South Africans should be happy about it. Cut out the race baiting if you want to be taken seriously.

(1) It's mmm-BOO-bay. (2) Wimoway was a bad transcription of "uyimbube" (you are a lion). (3) Solomon Linda had an original arrangement of a traditional Zulu chant. They added the "wimoway" part. The chant wasn't about sleeping lions. Zulu warriors got their courage tested by how close they could approach a lion.
Did you care to speak to The Tokens and find out how they were screwed out of millions of dollars as well? Guess not, this video is quite one sided and has no depth and no info that gives the story. While Solomon Linda deserves much credit, and his family deserves $ which I believe they are now getting, this is far from the full picture. BTW I spoke to Rian Milan for his infamous article in Rolling Stone, as did my brothers, the Margo Brothers, original founding members of The Tokens, who actually wrote part of the melody for the song but were never credited.
