As far as feeding, I've never had crabs but someone just dropped a panther crab on me. I have been feeding him along with the fish, but I added sinking pellets to the mix. I bought some dried shrimp, and can feed him with a long grab claw tweezer thing. I want to set up a calsium crushed shell feeding bowl, to help with his shell, but I'm not sure if a bowl that is always full is correct. I bought a terra cotta boat (about 6 cm long) and was thinking fill the bottom, and then just place that in the water, and he can dig as he wants, but I'm not sure if that is correct. Any advice? We found a 4cm deep bowl about 8cm across, and it fits perfect inside a fishtank pumpkin, we filled it with sand, so I'm hoping this is a safe place for him to molt. Basically a kittie pool with a tent on top, to keep the fish from bothering him.

I'm thinking of using a 30 litre tank for a small group of vampire crabs. It will be my first crab tank and I have a few questions: How would you keep the tank humid? Do you have to spray it occasionally, and if so, with what?
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 5 дней назад
@@sircheese109 30 liters is the smallest you can go. 3 crabs Max! If its a vertical style tank it's too small. To keep the humidity up you need a lid that covers it fully with small holes for airflow. Spraying will depend on the room the tank is in the light etc. Sometims once a day sometimes once a week.
@sircheese109
@sircheese109 5 дней назад
@IndoorEcosystem It won't be in direct sunlight, but at certain times of day it will get small amounts of sunlight, roughly an hour or 2 depending on the weather and time of year. But thanks for the advice!

Great to see someone thinking along the same line as me, limiting unnatural materials within their builds 👍 Creating a piece of nature while actually destroying it doing so doesn't sound right. Can't be completely avoided but we should try to limit the impact. Expanding foam creates a lot of mess during application and again when scraping it down. Also use of local resources where possible is a nice approach.
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 6 дней назад
Well said! Thanks for dropping the comment. This kind of approach doesn't get the attention it deserves sadly. So I'm really glad you feel the same about it 😊 I've got some different methods coming in futures videos that show some cool alternatives though.

Hi, regarding maintenance and feeding, how long can the tank and the crabs survive without being "taken care of"? Say, if you wanted to go on vacation for a week, would they be able to survive that if you gave them enough food spread out in the tank? And what about the humidity and other abiotic factors, can they still be maintained or do they need to be attended to more often? Thanks for the videos!
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 7 дней назад
It really depends how well you set it up and how old it is before you go away. Generally you can easily go 2 - 3 weeks if it's fully bio active and has been set up for a while. But if it's new and still settling in it's best to have someone feed them. Older tanks are always more stable 🙂
@gumlemanden
@gumlemanden 7 дней назад
@@IndoorEcosystem Awesome, that is actually really cool that the tank can be fully self-sustaining! How long does that take, a couple of months or a year? And does it require any other coinhabitants in the tank than springtails?
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 7 дней назад
@@gumlemanden I'd say about 3-4 months is usually enough. Springtails, Isopods, earthworms, snails and shrimp are the best additions. They all self regulate populations and don't over compete the space. Obviously the bigger the tank the better the success as well. It's the standard case of population vs environment size. 🙂
@gumlemanden
@gumlemanden 6 дней назад
@@IndoorEcosystem Sounds good! Are there any indicators to look out for to know when these conditions are reached?
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 6 дней назад
@@gumlemanden You'll get to understand your little ecosystem as it evolves but usually the best sign is when you see all sorts of little micro fauna getting around the tank. springtails everywhere, isopods dotted around etc. A good thing to help the system is to add a fair bit of leaf litter to the bottom of the tank. This helps a lot. As it breaks down just top it up.
