In this video I show you how to create a cost-effective quarantine tank for Vampire Crabs. It's always a good idea to have a spare tank set up if you keep vampire crabs just in case there are problems with fighting and injuries. This Vampire Crab nano paludarium Ecosystem is also perfect for babies if you have been lucky enough to breed them.

Cost effective and gorgeous, exactly the kind of isolation tank I would want. I'm building a 12 gallon paludarium, so this gave me some good ideas.

12 gallons is one of my favourite sizes to work in as well 👌 a good balance of everything. If anything random pops up while you're building it don't hesitate to drop a question 🙂

Thank you very much ☺At this stage it's all just a little hobby for me. Perhaps if I ever make it to 100k I might put my hand up for something a little more out there. Though I do have tons to learn yet still!

Personally, when I redo the palludarium for the crabs in a few months I would definitely get a terrarium because the crabs love to climb plants and stay in the daytime, near the light. In addition to loving making galleries in the ground.
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 3 месяца назад
Which species do you have? Some like to spend more time up high than others but I've found it pretty mixed with climbing. It depends a lot on the plants. With ferns they climb others a lot less often.

@@IndoorEcosystem I have a 2 species Geosesarma Dennerle & Red pincer , plants are , à Photos a creeping and climbing plant that everyone uses as a hanger plant , one bromelia red , one Ananas plant , 2 phormium, Forest & Java moss. Substrate 100% Coco fiber.

@@fredericcolombier5380 2 species in different tanks right? Two species in the same tank is a disaster waiting to happen unfortunately. Lots of fighting, stress, and evasive action taking place. The tank sounds pretty nice well decked though.

Loose the plastic matting...Its not needed and added nothing to the build other than more plastic...For padding, try pure natural wool felt (this material can last over 20 years in that setting or more) as a padding. It can be more expensive. What I use most often (though I do make my ow felt) is a thin sheet of natural wood. Wood under water will not decay, is a great padding materials. With wood You can even create a greater geometry to use smaller and/or thinner rock yet still get a lot of build up. You can also create filter spaces if you want it or a natural "under substrait" natural filtering that takes place in this void space. If purchased wood is too expensive, simple lattice build up of hardwood twigs/sticks can achieve the same rafting effect for mineral based medium and build out...Thanks again for another great video...

It's Impossible to find something that hasn't been layered with glue here unfortunately. A stick raft is an interesting idea though! I just reuse the same set of plastic over and over in this situation. This one's about 8 years old. So about as good as it gets at the moment But I have been keeping an eye out for something better. 😉

@@IndoorEcosystem I don't need to know your exact location, but I would wager I could find a local saw mill near you (I have in many, but not all, places in Europe) The wood for such setup does not have to be dry. A nice ash, maple, alder, poplar or related hardwood works really well, is less expensive than "store bought" wood, and is not adulterated with glues or other toxins. Twig, branch or even riven fire wood works great and is near to free as you can get… Your recycling of those piece is way better than what most do…Thanks for that…I’m only scratching the surface here of “natural builds” but you do such a great job most often, I only add a few suggestions when they seem of use…Thanks again for sharing what you share…
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 3 месяца назад
@@JayCWhiteCloud I actually know of a couple of sawmills here though they are primarily processing pine for Ikea. I've never seen a log in the lot that wasn't pine. Though I'm sure there are actually some smaller ones getting around. I'll certainly keep an eye out because they would be handy for a few other things as well cheers for the suggestion!
@JayCWhiteCloud
@JayCWhiteCloud 3 месяца назад
@@IndoorEcosystem If you are in Eastern Europe, like Polland, conifers will be the most prevalent species. It can work without issue, just a little more prep, and the positive is it is often much less expensive. You want if at all possible, a "rift" or "quarter sawn" piece as this is the most dimensionally stable wood green or dry...If you ask nicely, and tell them you not looking for a lot, you may be allowed to dig through their "caul pile" or the "slash wood" they have laying around. With a little bit of learning (feel free to ask questions if they come up) you can do some really neat things with "free wood." I've designed and built entire houses from mostly free wood...Good luck and I"m looking forward, as always, to your next video...

@@JayCWhiteCloud Free is almost a foreign word here these days 😆 They'll try to sell you the crumbs at the bottom of the cookie jar if they can! But that's some really handy info to keep an eye out for.

What kind of vampire crab are u going to put in there?
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 3 месяца назад
It's purely for hospital and quarantine only. It's too small for a full time tank. So only crabs that loose too many limbs and need rehabilitation and time to recover. It doesn't happen often but it's always good to be prepared 😊 5 gallons 25litres is the smallest you can keep them in permanently.
