Nightmare Survival was such great fun to play. I managed to beat it once with a homebrew deck that had Lobotomy but otherwise it was impossible to beat.
My first deck I ever built was a Mono Green Hydra deck so Hydras have a special place in my heart. At the time, Journey Unto Nyx had just dropped so I had some good options for the time. Primordial and Kalonian were my top dogs, along with Mistcutter and Protean. Ramp, Stomp, Repeat. I also found Solidarity of Heroes to be a staple. Pit Fight and Bio Shift also came in handy.
This is quite possibly the worst youtube video I've seen in about 14 years. Instead of telling the simple linear story about how a match played out 25 years ago, we get this chopped mess of op-ed commentary, back and forth cuts, long-winded tangents and off-the-cuff remarks about what is and could've been. It's like someone had a stroke and THEN decided to write the script for this video. Thank you. Thank you for reminding me why an education is the single most important event in a person's development.
4:39 one detail that really annoys me is that Flailing Manticore is typed as “Monster” in a ‘99 set but Sawback Manticore from Mirage in ‘96 is just a manticore, like every other manticore in magic
Seeing Urza's Saga being discussed after reading Drestroy All Humankind really puts things in perspective. Watching them portray Urza's Saga from the perspective of a single LGS in Japan and the subsequent card bans, as I've said, really contextualized it as someone who wasn't even alive for it for one, and only truly got into MtG during Amonkhet.
I have actually recreated this deck in a SIMILAR fashion for historic arena. 8 mana dorks 4 old growth 4 steel leaf 4 caliver knight elemental 4 craterhoof 4 storm the festival 4 kiora 20 Forrest 4 Nyx This is the core of the deck; 56 cards. 4 of them, I have flip flopped around trying new things to find a balance of what I like. I have tried it with CoCo (collected company), but I found it often removes what I need to win I.E craterhoof, Nyx or Kiora. For awhile I ran into mill decks which I was using Gae's blessing which essentially shut off those decks. Currently I am using Elven foresight. To speed up the process to what I need to win. My version of this deck is way more stompy green beats your face in over combo.
Just stumbled on this video and I must say I kinda disagree with how bad you think mercadian masques was. First of all I play counter rebels in premodern and my win rate is fairly high. It's all about being creative in deck building plus knowing how to properly play your deck in the meta. The cards in that block weren't that bad. I feel sorry for you, it must suck to suck at magic if you have to bitch about a block that came out 24 yrs ago.
kinda crazy going back to this, seeing standard being the third biggest at 1904 cards just before kaladesh rotated out, looking at right now with 3 year rotation and a whopping 3037 cards legal in standard, oh wotc you confuse me
