"Thank you so much for the fantastic video on the Harlem Hellfighters! Your in-depth research and engaging presentation really brought their remarkable story to life. It's clear how much effort you put into highlighting their bravery and contributions during World War I. I truly appreciate how you've shed light on their historical significance. Great work!" --- ❤

This is such a brilliant documentary. Thank you for sharing this story. Mr William Butler deserves to receive that medal of honour for his heroic participation. Let's hope that your documentary shed some light into this so that he get recognised for his contribution. Such racism then and still exists to this day. The indigenous race of the Americans were not white and it is so sad to see that people of dark skin are treated as inferior.😢

So many thoughts and feelings after this video! First of all, this is exactly the sort of thing people who doubt the existence of systemic racism need to see, these would have been incredible feats without the challenges they faced at home, they were set up to fail and they _still_ outshone their contemporaries. It also weakens the argument of some racism being more excusable as it was "of the time" as there were allies who risked themselves just to see people treated fairly. But the big thing here I think is showing that these men weren't _just_ amazing fighters, they were accomplished musicians and artists too. I'd never heard of them before, thank you for sharing their stories. 💖

Not only do I think he didnt do it, its shocking to me that it feels like we see this kind of miscarriage of justice continuing on today. Sometimes it feels like the legal system cares more about convicting _someone_ than convicting the right person.

What an intriguing piece of history. We really have come a long way in both spiritual and judicial practices. When you told us what the jury was threatened with my jaw dropped! I do feel bad for all the victims though, they had terrible luck. The girl, though, doesn't have my sympathy if it was faked. All of items that she coughed up being dry reminded me of the woman who gave birth to rabbits. It's possible that she had someone help her pull it off. Though I'll admit when it comes to coals I'm not entirely sure how they did it. For the hair locks though she, or an accomplice, planted them. With all of the workers in the house I wouldn't be surprised if they got some hair pieces while the servamts were sleeping or got a hair cut. This is a really good video, thank you for making it 💙💙💙
@TheCuriousLibrary
@TheCuriousLibrary 2 месяца назад
Yes, it is isn't it? I could have gone on for hours with this story 😂. I really hope that she wasn't faking it and that she really believed she had been bewitched... but she also very well could have been faking it and working with an accomplice, just like in the rabbit hoax case you mentioned. The coals are definitely difficult to explain, it could have been exaggerated, but because the doctor who supposedly saw it was so respected in the community, anything he said would have been taken as gospel! I too am glad that we've come a long way and that today, such accusations would not result in innocent people losing their lives! Thanks for watching and take care 🙂

Thanks for another well Put together True story.. One crucial lesson from the story of the Paisley Witches is the importance of due process and the presumption of innocence. It underscores the need for fair and just legal systems that protect individuals from unfounded accusations and mob mentality. Additionally, it serves as a reminder of the dangers of scapegoating and the importance of questioning societal norms and beliefs. Overall, it's a cautionary tale about the consequences of unchecked fear and prejudice. ❤❤

Yes! I love this story! Interestingly enough, John Shaw just happened to be in Salem, USA, curiously enough... I think Christian might have been listening in to conversations between adults and scared herself - she was only 11. Also interesting is the death of her first husband. There are people who believe that Christian and her mother Christine fabricated the whole thing, too... Or that perhaps Christian was merely a pawn in other peoples' game. Gallow Green in Paisley is actually a very pretty part of the town (and spooky as heck at night!). A few years ago, I was part of Paisley Ghost Tours for a night, as Katherine Campbell. Brilliant story - thanks for sharing it!

How interesting! I think you're right. Well, at least I hope she scared herself and wasn't just faking the whole thing! Oh wow, the ghost tour must have been a fab experience and I can definitely imagine the Gallow Green being spooky at night. Thanks for watching (and for the video topic suggestion!) Take care 🙂

Poisons used to come in dark brown bottles with vertical ribs, but it really seems odd that poisons or toxic chemicals, medicines or substances are not strongly coloured albeit artificially. That way, say a bright red, would alert anyone to it being a dangerous substance, be it liquid , powder or solid.
@TheCuriousLibrary
@TheCuriousLibrary 4 месяца назад
Yes you’re right, they did change this at a later date! That detail of how they should be stored was eventually stipulated by the Pharmacy Act which came into force after this incident. Poisons were to be stored “In a bottle or vessel rendered distinguishable by touch”. The sale of Arsenic Regulation Act was in force at the time though - arsenic had to be coloured before leaving the shop, but unfortunately it didn’t help in this situation - it hadn’t been coloured yet, so a mixup could easily be made!

Sometimes things are a perfect storm, and this is one of them. While the professionals should have done their job thoroughly, and held their standards higher, things like this will happen eventually. While it's sad that 21 people died, I agree that it absolutely is a better outcome to what could have happened. This reminds me of the Tylenol poisonings, it could have been so much worse, but so many people lucked out. Not to mention that there are, albeit morbidly, good things that came from these incidents. Maybe their descendants (of both incidents) should check if they're part cat or something? A good video as always, take care until next time!
@TheCuriousLibrary
@TheCuriousLibrary 4 месяца назад
It definitely was a perfect storm wasn't it! I agree, there was a lot of luck in both of those cases that more people weren't hurt. Also, it sounds like the people investigating in both this case and the Tylenol case seemed to be pretty on the ball which likely helped a great deal. It's terrible that these things happen, but I'm glad that there's often a silver lining to these incidents and change happens to make things safer 🙂. Thanks for watching and take care 🙂

Wow, this was a roller coaster that I wasn't expecting. Through it all though, I'm happy that Pearl was able to express herself how she wanted to. She sounds like she was an amazing woman. I forgot that this was in the early 1900s until you started talking about films and it was shocking to realize that a century ago women couldn't easily publish works under their names. Thank you for making a wonderful video about Pearl, her life deserves to be told ❤

Yes, Pearl certainly does sound like an awesome woman doesn't she? 🙂. It's sad that women had to hide behind spirits in order to be heard, but I too am glad that Pearl found a way to express herself through Patience and that she even managed to find some success under her own name. A lovely video! I know I said it before, but I love how you share multiple POVs and give facts of the time period so that it's easier to understand how this happened. It's sad that hindsight makes tragedies like this seem so easily preventable. Sadly it's not until it's about to happen that people realize something's wrong. There is a point where hindsight and commonsense blur though. One thing that should have been commonsense though, is to not put the heavy listing ship as the one with the heaviest traffic. Keep up the good work, it was nice seeing your video!

I can't believe that such tragedy is not made known as the tragedy of the Titanic, because of the class of the lives of the people involved. Life is precious, it has nothing to do with materialistic wealth of the individual, however that's the society we were bought up to believe which is incredibly wrong and it is getting worse, because a lot of people still believe you are judge by what you have and not what is within which is your precious life force. Just want to say I love, love your outfit it is truly uplifting 💋👌❤️

Thanks once again for a informative bit of history. Its unfortunate that class play such a big part in preventing true Justice for the victims. Maybe that's the reason the story is not as famous as the Titanic incident ? Anyway some good did come out of it in the end changes was made to enabled us to enjoy traveling safer on the ocean etc! Thanks so much for the beautiful presentation etc❤

Another amazing story brilliantly told. Entirely preventable deaths for the sake of profit, zero repercussions, and nothing for the survivors or victims families. It's wild to think that there's random outbreaks like this that happened so frequently back then. I couldn't even imagine the fear that the sweating sickness caused back then, at least now we can make vaccines for almost everything. It's also a plus that our treatments don't include suffocating yourself in blankets anymore. Keep up the good work!

I love this story so much! Everything is so stupid 😂 - the motivation to steal the body makes no sense - the central meeting point for the criminal underworld being called "the hub" sounds like the laziest Hollywood writing - the bragging - the fact that both the police and secret service needed convincing because the idea of it was so ridiculous they couldn't believe it - Lewis figuring out the test because the fake plan was stupid... the actual plan was even stupider - "boss body snatcher of Chicago" FTW! - "the whole thing blown to pieces" (what do they think is gonna happen to the body) - the obvious lies about Billy - the totally unnecessary password, could have just said "Patrick" - the secret service getting cold feet figuratively (waiting until it was almost too late) and I guess literally (running out without their shoes) - accidentally alerting the grave robbers to their presence in perhaps the daftest way possible - shooting at themselves long after the grave robbers got away And yet... And yet! They nearly did it! They got the casket and were on their way out. I wish they'd succeeded, but regardless this needs a period comedy heist movie ASAP

Another great video! I love that you explained what was going on historically, politically, and the customs at the time because it does help a lot to understand why this happened the way it did. Starting off the new year strong! It's sad though how a group devolves under social isolation and fear. Urbain may haven't taken his oaths of celibacy seriously, but he didn't deserve to have that kind of death. Thank you for the video, and take care!

Welcome back! I hope you and Gargi had a lovely Christmas break. 💖 I think this video is my favourite so far! There's so much depth to what was going on here, from the power games of church and state, the pettiness of political rivalry and how the religious women were being made to feel guilty for their bodily urges while the religious men were allowed to do whatever they want as long as they didn't stupidly write it down. All of which is quite funny until you realise 400 years later, little has changed. 😬

I really like how you focused on the heroics in the theatre. I feel like a lot of people might have chosen to focus on the horror, but you've shown there were regular folk there putting themselves at risk to save others and if that's not hope for humanity, I don't know what is. I dunno about the architect though. If you brag that you studied every theatre disaster in history and are subsequently responsible for the greatest loss of life... it kinda _sounds_ like you were trying 😬

It's heartbreaking that most building safety and requirements come from hindsight. I've watched a few viseos about this before, but they didn't go over the statements and perspectives of the victims and related. This is a well put together video, and hearing from multiple perspectives makes it feel more real, instead of a far away thing. All of that aside, it was nice to watch another of your videos, thank you for posting!
