Yeah I agree too much black. I do have an older capella vest that is grey but that doesn't help a ton. If you can find the Ronix Megacorp capella vest the front is bright at least.
Nice seeing someone hacking wakeboard boots. After 3 pairs of rads I gave up on Slingshot boots, despite loving their K9 fix system (The complexity does not bother me, and I love the flexibility allowing to fine tune position: it gives you an almost-flextrack precision in stance width even on boards with not that many inserts,, and add centering adjustment as a bonus) and also the gummy straps. However, their fit went from tight but OK in 2020/2021 to too small and painfull in 2022 when they added the second gummy strap, on the same size same model. The front of the shoe got too narrow for me and has a painful pressure point near the new gummy strap. But the main reason is that they are too fragile: I teared off the liner at the heel after one cable season on each pair (maybe after 20 times 2h), and pulled off the boot from the base one my second pair (really bad suction on a backroll, even submarining, but the boot should handle that if it happen especially as it cost me a boot on one side and a knee ligament on the other side). Soo many riders got boot/base separation toward the heel after 1 or 1.5 season at my local cable that it can be considered an inherent flaw, not a freak failure: boot/base stiching/gluing is weak. I went to a more traditional boot, with much less adjustment but better fit, lighter and hopefully more durable (I think it will be, I got a crash that would have teared my rad off it's base almost for sure hand here the boot didn't flinch, contrary to my ankle ;-) ). However, I miss the gummy straps (new boots have a velcro strap, very well positioned on the boot, but velcro is not as nice as gummy strap: it does not stay tight), so I think of a hack getting the straps from my destroyed rad to replace the velcro of the new boot. Waiting for the end of warranty of my new boots to try, if I manage to do this boot transplant surgery cleanly enough I may post the result ;-)...
Yeah I noticed the Rads fit smaller than my spacemob shell with the same internal liner. That is a bummer though that you’ve had so many issues with them. Which traditional boot did you end up switching to? I think hacks are worth it especially if you don’t have a ton of money wrapped up in them. Agree the gummy straps are nice.
@@LifetimeShred DUP costa, their boot with lace and non-removable liner (Yep I'm very old school (and also very old - period ;-) ), I like walkable liner when walking back to the dock, but absolutely hate the sensation swimming with those...and I like the strong lock-in feeling provided by good sized fixed liner, something I never really found on removable liner or worse, system bindings. DUP Costa feel nice after 1 session, contrary to the rad they fit larger so better to downsize a little bit compared to shoes, which my vendor correctly advised. They are very light and with nice support, the velcro is used to keep your heel down rather that tighten the boot....But traditional base, so the positioning is not as flexible as I loved on the rad....
Sweet Video! Was wondering if you have any advice, social media groups, forums, etc. to find people around Utah into wakeboarding. Just moved here this spring from Wisconsin and wakeboarding is the #1 thing I miss - I can live without surfing haha. Even back in WI with all the lakes we have, it was tough to find people as motivated to ride as me... everyone just surfs because it's more accessible. Also curious about competitions which could be a good way to meet people. I could probably enroll in an intermediate class but not sure what the level is like around here (I've got 3's, ts 5, scarecrow, backrolls, etc.). Hope you have a great season this year!
Rad, yeah there is a decent scene here all things considered. Bunch of riders across the wasatch reservoirs. A lot of us get up early, ride hard and then head home. Some do the lake chill thing too, but I would say that is the minority in the group of people I know. There are also a bunch of us that go down to Imondi Wake Zone in CO a few times a summer. Comp wise, I would checkout Wake the Snake in Burley ID. Also, the Pro Wake Tour is coming to Jordanelle end of next week. I'm currently in between the 146 Liquid Force Peak 2024 and the 147 Ronix Utopia 2024. The Utopia is slightly more narrow, meaning even though it's 1cm longer, it has less surface area. Basically, buoyancy + stability on landings vs manoeuvrability + weight.
Yeah I know a few of these board run a little more narrow. Johnny Rocket does for sure. Which do you prefer of the 2? I’d like to demo the Utopia and Guara in particular.
Surf rollers wouldn't be so bad if they understood that driving an actual line would help themselves as well, along with everyone else on the water. But when they just pull their surfers up in any direction they want, that's when the water conditions go to shit!
I think even then, you get the pushing roller that goes down the lake in addition to the side rollers from the wakes. It’s something I noticed at EC over the years where generally people do run north south. The pushing roller isn’t even really a roller but more of an elongated wave. It’s hard to see but you can feel it when cutting in almost like you’re riding a rhythm track into the wake. Even for wakeboarding/waterskiing you make a temporary one of these when you come off plane to pickup a rider. Have an idea how to show it from an above drone shot. Future video idea on my list.
For me, surf rollers on early morning glass is a major buzz kill. Sure, once conditions aren’t as great, grab the surfer and have a blast. Before then, if not on plane, it’s a pain.
Since Hyperlite has a patent on the systems, it limits who will ride them at the pro level to their team. It is interesting though that while JB Oneill and Trevor Maur seem to love them, other cable/winch riders like Graeme use a removable liner closed toe binding. I rode lowback systems with JD Webb and then Murray boots from 2017-2021. Here’s my take on them: Positives: -Protect feet when walking and good support -Easy and fast to get in and out of bindings -Lowbacks give lots of ability to tweak grabs hard -Can replace them in parts instead of all at once to spread out cost -If you travel, makes the board bag not as tall which makes packing easier. Negatives: -Boot can fold over back of the lowback heelcup on a hard edge catch. -Had this happen and tore open the heel of my JB Webb boots. -Boots are bulky to swim in. -Noticeably harder to swim in than a removable liner and much hard than bare feet. -The boots need to fit your foot shape. Only Hyperlite makes them, so options are limited. The JB Webbs were never great for me. The Murray was perfect but they stopped making them. Neither are made anymore. Tried on the Freepress and it was bad for me which is when I switched to Space Mobs. Make sure you try them on before buying. -Have to be mindful of screws on bindings as you can lose a strap easily otherwise Neutral: -Feel different than normal wakeboard bindings. Closer to a snowboard feel. For me this meant a little less of a uniform connection to the board and more of the feeling of 2 tight straps holding you down. Some love, some don’t. If I were to ride them again, I think I would give the highback “pro” version a try. I don’t love the look of them, but I think the support would be a plus.
Great honest review. Your comments on charging are spot on. I have a camper and went with F150 with the power boost and onboard generator so you can power the camper while boondocking. I’d like to own a R1T but don’t think I would sell it to replace my F150. Rivian looks like an awesome city truck for short trips.
Agreed. It’s all individual use case. For some EVs are the best option. For others it’s the worst option. Sounds like powerboost fits your use case well. I think it’ll be interesting to see how the Ramcharger does out in the wild. I can see that trying to play all use cases for trucks.
do you regret it now that the Tesla supercharger access is here? Just wondering because I'm getting a camper soon and with my R1T, I've mapped out routes and the superchargers are just everywhere so I'm no longer concerned!
For me, I don’t think I regret it for now. I think with the Tesla superchargers you’re still gonna have to unhitch every time you charge. That said for road trips without towing the Tesla superchargers are a game changer for sure. Would love to have an R3 for a daily driver when they come out. Right now I use a 16’ expedition for towing and am a manual VW Alltrack for daily usage.
Hi, do you think the Hyperlite bindings are easier to break? As there are more parts, I think there is more chance of breaking, however maybe it's better to break the binding then the board. I train mainly air tricks, what do you think it's better? Bindings or a closed boot fixed to the board?
I do think they have more maintenance as there are more screws to lose. On my old low backs, I lost a strap screw in the middle of a lap. It does happen. The other downside to them, I would say it specifically with the low backs. If you catch a heel edge, the back of the boot kind of folds over the heel cup. I think the systems with the high back could be good for you. I would just avoid the low back otherwise a normal pair of walkable liner closed toe are great.
Yeah, agreed. Better lens and sensor. Plus with the old one I would zoom in often when editing. This reduces quality. Less need to do that with the 3x lens.
I did the same (but more carefully and reversible:)) with my KTV a year ago. I managed to get out the inner liner (using heat gun and patience:)) with a minimal damage. Added laces hooks for 20$ in a shop. Covered velcro with another velcro(soft part). Works just great and reversible (just remove velcro cover and laces and put it together).
Nice. I tried a hair dryer but wasn’t getting anywhere. Probably need a legit heat gun to do it that way and a lot of patience haha. For the $170 I was in on them i’m happy with where I ended up. Feels perfect with the liner in.
I never ended up towing long distance due to the range constraints I mentioned. Based on the length of truck + boat I would have had to take the hitch off at almost all the electrify america locations I went to during ownership..
I bought a pleasure this year. im 6 foot 2 so i bought the 155 and even at my height it feels massive. It is a lot more difficult to ollie than my 149 blacklists, idk if its the size and weight of the board or the rocker. it is super fast on the water and despite having channels it is super loose. Only thing I don't like about it is the pop off the water, i can barely get around an ollie front 3. I might be spoiled though because my blacklist could POP.
Interesting notes on the boards. I think I've read the Pleasure is more narrow than other boards, Blacklist included. I'd also say the amount of rocker has a ton to do with it too. Sounds to me it might have less rocker if super fast nut not popping a ton when loaded. Are you going to sell it and get something else? I'm still keen to demo the Guara from the HL setup but haven't been able to yet.
@@LifetimeShred I plan on sticking with my pleasure for this season. Luckily I got long legs so I can make up the lack of pop. My black list was definitely skinnier than my pleasure. Pleasure feels like a regular width for its size and shape of board. Tbf I’m used to skinny boards because I don’t ride wide boards from brands like slingshot. Best part about my board is it’s graphic, the top of the board is completely murdered out with a gloss finish and a couple blue lines. It also has female torso in the middle it which i didn’t notice until I got it in the mail 😂.

The cable I go to most (Imondi Wake Zone) has a few demoes in shop but no Hyperlite. I know the Johnny Rocket and the Solo are both skinner from Slngshot but everything else is wider. And yeah the Pleasure graphics are good for sure.
As a dad just getting into the sport :) Do you think I should get this board or the Slate 2.0? I'm experienced in water skiing, kneeboarding, etc, but I just never got into wakeboarding until now.
I'd go with the Murray personally. It will work great as you get into the sport but also be there for you once you've improved. The State 2.0 has a lot of features geared specifically toward edging such as being asymmetrical, big center fins, lot of bottom channels. For those reasons, I would actually argue the Murray will be more forgiving with chances for edge catches. Since you are already experienced in watersports, I don't think you'll need the edging handicap the State provides and the positive sides of the Murray just make more sense at that point. Price wise, I know the State is less, but there are deals on last years Murray right now that make it competitive price wise.

Solid, thorough review, Rich. A couple of things. 1) The debate is still out on whether or not you want to actually come out of your bindings on a crash. If both feet come out, that's the best scenario, but if 1 gets stuck and the other doesn't, that's not good. That's how I broke my femur and others have blown knees/ankles because the board swings & torques around loosely and can really injure those joints/bones. 2) If you wear a pair of Hyperlite System bindings on the boat, DO NOT put the boot portion on until you're on the swim platform. I've had people start putting them on in the cockpit and then walk over the back vinyl and I was like, "What the hell are you doing?????" That's like walking in the boat with shoes so don't do that!
Good call on the bindings. I would say they should either be cinched tight or super loose. Id also add that the loose mostly just applies to lower end open toe that have less support and a shorter cuff anyway. Plus only for people just learning to get up and turn etc. Don’t go loose if you are jumping. Maybe ill add something to the description to call that out. Yeah with the Systems I agree. In general I just think of them as cable bindings. I know there was a moment when the HL team used them on the boat a lot but I think inly Maur does now. Id say systems and removable liner boots are just extra crap to deal with on a boat.
I'm in 2 seasons on them. Had to replace 2 gummy straps that tore. Liner feels like it is wearing out but the boot shell still feels good on mine. Bought some new liners over the winter I plan to use this year with the existing shells. I ride about 15 cable days a year though, so mileage may vary.
I have the 165 rover, Its a really fun step away from normal cable riding. Its way more surfy, and really isnt that difficult to get on rail. Use it a lot for winch sessions. Nice list by the way!

@@chocorider Yeah if I went LF I think that would be the one. Weary of the insert sliders as I've seen them tear out, but otherwise the board has the right features.
I hope their r2 and the r1 refresh addresses the bad choice they made with the body design in terms of repairability. Makes insurance costs extra absurd because of the silly cost of what should be simple fender bender type repairs.
100% on that. My repair ended up being $17k before insurance. Not as crazy as some people's stories but crazy regardless. Plus with the design in the back the bumper doesn't protect about 6" on each side of the rear end. Looks cool but not practical. All that said, I own fault for dinging it in the first place.
@@LifetimeShred Yeah, but shit happens to everyone, and it is meant to be taking into the woods and off road. Dings and dents accidentally caused by the owner (especially given things like the bumper issue) should be expected & planned for. When you don't have repair shops, designing for easy repairability should be paramount.
@@curtisbme Yeah I agree. Between the vehicle not fitting my future tow needs and then the crazy repair experience I was over it. I haven't written Rivian off permanently but not planning to buy another anytime soon.
Not arguing with your towing experience. But I think these are just fine for road trips. I drove my Rivian R1S from MN to Key West Florida through KY for a bourbon tour, his the Carolinas, Savanah GA and hugged the east coast of FL and back. It was an amazing trip. I would wake up each morning with a full 100% charge, drive for 4 hours, stop to charge, stretch my legs, bio brake, buy a drink and a snack (~half hour) and then do another 4 hours. In some occasions I might do 3 of these, but the whole point of the road trip was to stop and enjoy the sites along the way to the main destination. Doing a similar trip to the West coast next. No issues with the EA chargers i used, but Rivian will soon have access to the Tesla Supercharging network.
I did a few road trips, too, without towing that went decently well. I think my main frustration was with Electrify America more than the Rivian itself. Car was comfortable for long distances. Going to be awesome for owners once the tesla network is available.
Yeah I confirmed the trailer was level and since the surge lockout worked my best hypothesis is the regen breaking. Same trailer/boat on my now expedition doesn’t have the problem.

So my goals for this coming summer at age 51, is to stay healthy and get my limited riding skills back to being consistent so I can at least build back my confidence in my riding. Would you recommend them for cable riding? I know you ride the space mobs on cable, just wondering how you'd feel about these behind cable assuming you don't need the liner for the walk back. I had some KTVs for boat riding, but I found myself getting bad hotspots at the outer edge of my foot, so I'm steering clear of slingshot for right now. I know the ronixs are supposed to be the most comfortable, I'm debating between these or maybe some systems for the easy entrance / exits at the park. Thanks mate.
That’s a good question. I would say it depends what you want to do on the cable. I think if you are focused on kicker hits and air tricks, these could be great bindings. They do run stiffer than most cable bindings do though. I know you said that you don’t need the liner for the walk back, but if you ever do travel to another park, it is nice to have. Hyperlite Systems could be a good option. There are also a number of other walkable liners similar to how the space mob works. Ronix has the Kinetic and Atmos Exp which are intuition liners. I’ve never ridden either but they do look interesting. Hyperlite even has a walkable boot and they also have the system. If possible, I would see if you can try some on or if there’s an online shop area that has cheaper/free returns.
I have the rad, which I love for fit (although the new model with 2 straps size a tad smaller than previous one, which was already on the tigh side. So now I would advise to check vs just using your usual shoe size) and above all for stance customization (you can get more intermediate position than the insert hole spread and adjust toeward/heelward). But for durability it's a hard fail: teared off a binding off the baseplate after less than a season, teared the liner at heel position during the first season, on the 3 models I have. This is so bad that I will have to look elsewhere, sadly because this is the only claw+siderail mounts left and the other systems (appart for LF rail) do not have the flexibility and accuracy for adjustments
Dang, tore the baseplate off. I've seen it happen but haven't done it myself. I'm still liking the space mobs this season. Don't ride cable as much as I would like though, as none are in my immediate area. Closest is a 4 hour drive. Agree 100% people should try them on in person if they can.
@@LifetimeShred yep a lot of people have the rad or shredtown at my local cable, which means the binding have a lot of plusses. However, a lot also have partially or fully teared it off the plate, or have liner issues. So they are getting less popular (also cause they are a little bit heavy, which do not bother me). No issue reported with straps though, most people do not even need the included replacements. If slingshot fix the durability of shell and liner, I will happily buy a new pair

I realized it was not for me, nor are walkable liner models like the shredtown: I appreciate walking without hurting my feet (local cable had quite awful gravel) but I hate swimming with it. You'd think it's no big deal, you don't swim much... But it felt so awful I knew I only want traditional bindinds... I almost only do cable, but if you need to go in your binding in the water this could be an important choice factor, my current rads for example are too difficult to get in in the water...
I used to do that a lot for Thailand, and packed less than that: I let a board there, which is the difference between needing a special luggage vs just classic ones. So apart for the board, i took bindings (+extra screws), impact vest and sunblocking surfing lycra. Helmet, which doubled as scooter helmet (not approved for the use but more solid and better fitting than the crap than was provided when renting one). Board short/swim short/suncream/action cam were multipurpose, not only for wakeboarding, and I changed using towels. No need for any neoprene, water is so hot you will never use it...Gloves too, although lately I do without any. I guess with age and bigger boards I do not pull as strong and as much per session, which is why I can go without. Impact vest and bindings were the only bulky wake only stuff I had to take, but this pale compared to the board: this is the real issue for travelling, because it imply a special bag and being creative to fit withing the airplaine lugage allowances. Impact vest and helmet are not strictly neccessary, they are provided for free at cables. But the benefit of having your well fitting usual one vs the rental horrors makes it worth the hassle for me, as soon as you plan a trip with a few cable sessions
Yeah, traveling with the board, especially international can be hard. I went to Phuket a few years ago and packed kind of like what you did. Brought bindings, vest, helmet but no board. It can be hit or miss at different cables with what they have for rentals, but sometimes that is all you can do. Still a blast regardless though.
Great review, bro! Have you had any issues with the lace locks and/or the base plates cracking or warping? Maybe not with the One pair you just reviewed but with other Ronix bindings since those have been some of their more main issues in the past?
I think they've improved it. Lace locks for sure. These haven't warped on me at all, but I remember pairs pre brain frame construction that had some problems there.
I think if I had to do it again would have gone HS Backroll. Learned the Tantrum first and while fun it doesn't relate a ton to other inverts or even a normal edge. Plus HS Backroll has a ton of baby steps if people want them.
