Hey Kristin, just discovered two channels of yours today and have now watched about a dozen of your excellent videos. I'll be watching many more! Thank you for the excellent material - I'm a fan! Also, very glad to see your parents knew the proper way to spell "Kristin" lol - my eldest daughter shares your name ;-).
My wife and I have lived in the mountains of Alto Alentejo permanently since 2013, although we bought our house 10 years earlier. We've funded ourselves from savings since then, but finally get all our pensions this year (Hallelujah!!). We'll have about €3,500 a month pre-tax to live on. We've been living on €1500 a month up to now, so I KNOW we'll live like royalty in comparison. Live sensibly and Portugal is still incredibly affordable. My only comment on these RU-vidr videos though is don't move to Lisbon or the Algarve etc. We live 1km from Spain. We love living a bi-cultural lifestyle and access to both, very distinct cultures, virtually daily. Some things are much better and cheaper in Spain, some things in Portugal. We do exactly as the locals here do. My village is pretty much 50/50 Portuguese/Spanish now, with a sprinkling of Dutch, Belgians, English and Germans added more recently. And no, all of those like us, bought ruins and renovated their homes. More recently, homes here are being bought by Lisboetas, moving out of the City to find a more tranquil lifestyle. It's seems only a recent trend for Portuguese people to recognise that Campo life is infinitely better than City life.
I would love to see you make a video about the best places to live in Paris! Also, (I know it’s a lot to ask, but if you might possibly be able), I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know in a direct response to this comment, your personalized recommendations for locations in Paris specifically for my husband and me. We are both Americans in our 50’s, and my husband can work from anywhere in the world with an Internet connection. I speak fluent French and have spent significant time visiting and, even, living-for some months at a time-in various parts of France, including Paris itself, and I have always considered France to be kind of my “second country”. My husband does not (yet!) speak French and has only visited the country once, but he fell in love with it immediately. We would probably only live in France for about six months out of each year, and I think it would be in Paris, if we could possibly find something nice in our price range, because I just love the city (though I am certainly intrigued by your other suggested places, several of which I have been to and enjoyed). I think our rental budget (for a 1-2 bedroom, 1 1/2-2 bathroom apartment would be somewhere up to around €2,500, if furnished, less if not. (I know that’s a lot of information, and I thank you for reading it, whether or not you find the time to respond!) Merci bien!
