Most people who travel all of the time are trying to get away from something - which turns out of be themselves. But the problem with that is that wherever you go, there you are!

I'm an immigrant. I've been living in Mexico for about 3.5 years now out of the last four. I'm originally from the US and for a number of reasons I will never live there again. I did go back once briefly for personal business and that was only for a couple of weeks. I've also traveled to Canada, Guatemala, Panamá and Ecuador and my motivation was always to find a new home. Even though I was born in the US and spent most of my life there I never felt like an American and never felt that country truly accepted me. I feel quite the opposite about Mexico and so I've also gotten a four year temporary residency visa, which I didn't initially believe I would qualify, but did and this was one of the reasons for which I felt embraced by Mexico. I will convert it to permanent residency once that time arrives. I do plan to do more travel at some point, but for now I'm using some of my time building a home here in beautiful Oaxaca de Juarez. I'm retired btw so I have nothing but time. Interesting video too and I enjoyed it. And have a lovely day!

We are a mix of A& C I would say, getting ready to transition into part-time nomad online work and retirement in the next one to two years. Latin America is our goal as we love the warm weather and being close to the beach. We’re not interested in becoming citizens of any other country besides USA. We see ourselves in long term air bnb or seasonal apartment stays, exploring that country then return to USA in summer to a home we keep here. We love the variety and want to go slowly to really soak in the culture & flavor of the country we’re in while also having good internet, shopping close by, and enjoying one to relax in the sunshine! This video was good food for thought! Thanks much. You have great content I appreciate your well balanced thorough reporting of things, and your openness to others ideas!

I’m basically a B, slomad or roving retiree, but early retiree. There is some variation though. I’m living off of savings (A) and investments (D). Also, I’m not really in search of adventure if that means extreme sports like skydiving and the like. But if it’s more like exploring then yes, which would be an A for that then. Also, staying in hotels (A). And my emojis are A: 🌏✈️💻🎒. I’ve got layers! Like an onion!

I definitely feel like a global citizen overall as I have a good mix of all four. As I currently live in one place and can only travel during weekends and vacations, I try to make the most of my travels around the world. After doing the quiz, if I could work from anywhere, I had a lot of As and Bs on this one, so I would be a free-spirited slow traveler which would make great sense for me. I really like the idea of being in a place for a period of time while heading out and exploring many cool sights. At the same time, I would not want to be in a place for an extremely long time (at least for right now). This is such a great video idea!

I think we are somehow straddling types B and C - mostly in C. But we don't fit the demographic of most of your subscribers. We are older, in our late 70's. Fortunately, we are in very good health. We have developed our lifestyle over the past 40 years, and it works for us. It might not for others. We didn't have kids and so we aren't tied to kids, grandkids, or great grandkids like many of our friends. We are native to the Pacific Northwest of the USA, and have "resided" in the San Juan Islands of Washington State for nearly 40 years. But we are only there about five months of the year. We have figured out that it isn't winter everywhere, so we have decided to go places where a comfortable summer exists when that isn't the case in the San Juans. For us, "comfortable" is like the Pacific Northwest in July, August, and September. We used to ski 100 times (or more) each year - lived in ski area east of Seattle year around. Now we settle for a week at Whistler around New Years and pray for good snow. This last winter Whistler was a total bust at New Years. No snow at the base. But two weeks later we were in New Zealand enjoying the southern hemisphone summer. Lifestyle drives most of our travel decisions. We have been racing sailors and power boaters for over 50 years. In addition to owning our own boats, we have chartered sail and power yachts all over the world rather than voyaged to distant places. As voyaging sailors we once met in French Polynesia told us, "nothing goes to weather like a 747". We have been living aboard our trawler since May 1 and enjoying the local islands, which is pretty much our norm at this time of year. We will head north within a couple weeks once the hoards of boaters with children show up in the San Juan Islands. We avoid visa hassles as much as possible, generally limiting our overseas stays to 90 days. Since 1987 much of our travel has been focused on New Zealand. We have also spent some time in Australia and Europe, but for us New Zealand just feels more embracing and comfortable. Since my wife retired in 2000 we have spent January, February, and March there, close to maxing out the 90-day visa waiver that country automatically allows Americans. (You can actually extend that to 180 days, but it involves more work with the NZ immigation folks.) We have an added advantage that my wife is a dual USA/Canadian citizen and carriies both passports. In a pinch, she could stay longer (as a citizen of the Commonwealthy) and I would be allowed to also as her "baggage boy". We spend April and May, and sometimes the first half of June in the San Juan Islands. Then we get on our old trawler yacht and head north into British Columbia for a glorious summer cruising the Inside Passage in British Columbia and on to Southeast Alaska. In the fall, we are back in Friday Harbor. We sold our waterfront home there about 10 years ago and now rent a waterfront home year around, though we are only in residence part of the year. Avoiding the direct hit of continously increasing property taxes, maintenance, and insurance reduces the "burn rate" on our savings substantially. In New Zealand we have stayed in the same accommodation for nearly 20 years and have a great friendship with our landlords. The rental is about one-third of what we would pay for an AirBnB in the same area (a tourist destination). Our landlords are happy with that because we are highly trusted to take good care of the their property. Besides, we are now close friends. Over the years we have seen all of New Zealand, but our base now combines golf, fly fishing, hiking, sailing, and good restaurants so we are happy campers. We have done the numbers and think we can continue this lifestyle until our health fails. It works for us. We save money by not owning our primary residence. Perhaps the most important tactic we employ when travelling is to carefully observe and try to live like the locals. They have figured out how to have the best possible lifestyles in the context of their resources. That offers a LOT of insight, regardless of where you are.

Thank you for sharing, Hector! Great tips and what a fascinating life you lead! What would you say is the biggest way you’ve saved money by living like a local? Anything particular you changed about your lifestyle?
@hectorcyre7664

@@TravelingwithKristin It is really more about saving some money on lots of things than hitting a big savings on any one thing. However, a couple things come to mind. International car rental companies (like Avis, Hertz, and National) are outrageously expensive in New Zealand. Our Kiwi friends shared with us that they never rent from those companies. The local car rental companies are much less expensive (on the order of one-third the cost), and they have great cars. A Toyota is a Toyota. We found a used car dealer in Auckland who rented a few of his fleet off his lot, and dealt with him for years. Sometimes we didn't know which car we were going to get until he (personally) picked us up at the airport, but he was great to deal with and always put us in a good reliable car. When we had a problem with one of his cars one year, he personally drove three hours from Auckland to our location to deliver a replacement vehicle to us the following day. Try to get that kind of service from Avis, Hertz, or National. Our total cost of a rental car for 3 months is typically about NZ$3,300, or roughly US$2,000. Another thing we save on is food, which can be expensive in New Zealand or Australia. But if you adjust your eating habits to what the locals tend to eat, you can save some money. We love mussels, and they are fresh and cheap in New Zealand. So are the local fresh fish varieties, like gurnard and trevally. We have traded a six pack of beer for some really nice lobsters locals had harvested. Kiwis are very generous and never rip us off if we offer cash instead. Shoot, we have even been given lobsters when we offered to barter or buy. And if you become a regular customer at a local butcher shop or fish shop, they often let you know about specials, like when they have a local farms' lamb or beef rather than what they get from the major processors/distributors. The meat is often better quality too. Also, we eat venison (deer) in New Zealand. It is commonly raised on fenced paddocks just like beef. And the big New Zealand meat processors don't handle pork or goat so, when you can find it, it is usually locally raised, very fresh, and very good quality. I never imagined we would eat goat, but it is actually delicious in Thai and Indian dishes we like to prepare in a slow cooker. Local fruit and veggie growers in New Zealand (and Tasmania, AU) often have roadside stands where the prices are much less than in the stores. Many fruits tend to ripen in a relaively brief time period, creating gluts of product the growers want to unload so they do it at their own stands at very low prices. Oh, and we rarely drink New Zealand wines in New Zealand. It is primarily an export product, and actually cheaper in Canada and the USA. Go figure that one. We noticed our Kiwi friends drink Aussie wine, and finally figured out why. It is good wine, and generally costs about one half or one third of what the Kiwi wines of comparable quality cost because Austraila subsedizes export of their wines in their tax structure just like New Zealand does. Crazy but true. Also, imported liquor is heavily taxed in New Zealand, so we stock up at the duty free on the way into the country. Another thing we do is take manufactured items with us because New Zealand's import tarrifs are pparently insane. One (1) Titleist ProV1 golf ball is about NZ$10 in New Zealand compared to US$4 in the States. We take three to five dozen in our checked luggage every year. They also make great gifts for our Kiwi friends who are golfers.

I am mostly an A though also a bit of a slow traveller as I will stay at a location for 3-7. Using that location as base to go out each day and do different things. Some times longer if I am involved in a longer term activity. Ten days at one spot in Belize last year for scuba diving and three weeks in Antigua, Guatemala studying Spanish as a few examples.

Since at least one of the prominent definitions of expat is - someone who lives outside their home country, then that is how I see myself.

There is one other sort that isn't talked about much anymore: The Exile. You _can't_ go home again, for whatever reason, without causing (at the least, legally) a massive fight but exactly how you cope with being cast out of your homeland is up the air. Some stay on the move, some relocate, some do something else. You didn't leave by choice; you got thrown out or run out because the alternative was prison or death. We're coming up on a time of massive global upheaval. The major powers are not immune. _Someone_ will end up in this state, and those with the means are putting contingencies in place now to act upon should they be necessary. Not everyone travels because they want to.
