I'm Kev, amateur car builder and Defender owner! This series is a record of my attempts to take a rather battered 1988 Land Rover Defender 90 County Station Wagon and give it some TLC to revive it into a pretty awesome vehicle, as well as showcasing some of the other (potentially fun and interesting!) stuff that I do in my workshop
Cheers for the video helped out. I’ve done the same on mine and all good so far apart from the rear light / brake light they come on but are not getting brighter when pressing the brake pedal anyone got any idear on why this is happening
doing this on a 2001 defender what a shit of a job had to take most my dash apart to get access to the 2 screws that hold the adjustment for the fan and my heater vent for the window was in the road of a bolt right at the back
@@bobhayter8526 give yourself about half a day encase you have trouble with the 2 screws on the lever for the fan other than that they are not too bad to install
I realise these videos are a few years old and I'm not sure if you still monitor the comments but if you do, I would love to know how to assemble the test rig that you are using in the video for testing the raptor console before installing back into the landy. Thanks
Hi Kev, great videos, I drove the same car with auto trans, just wondering what’s your running engine temp? Mine is 90-92 deg c on idle, is this normal ?
Enjoyed the video, looking at something similar myself but wondering about single DIN vs double DIN units - keen for Android Auto enabled heat unit. I noticed the Pumpkin unit in the vid clips on the upper rail when it pops out, sitting well short of the 90° it might want - looks like it sits at an ok angle when open though. From your travels, do you know if other manufacturer units are likely to break if stopped from opening fully or are they happy to sit about the same angle when free of the housing?
Defender Kev More lıke ıt Mate I never have a problem crımpıng those bıg posts sınce about the age of 18 and ı dont need an hydraulıc tool ı sımply rest the ıtem between one of my testıes and a tthıgh take a deep breath and grıt my teeth ps lıke the new logo always had you down as more of an ınstrument type than a mechanıcal man Nıce to see you back and more content soon please
Yep, I would totally recommend it. That timelapse was about 7 hours of (fun!) construction and probably about 30 minutes to set it up. Software recommendation in the manual works really well but there are other options. Looking forward to printing some upgrades for it :)
It's been a while but I got it from a fabric supplier in Dewsbury near where I used to live. I just went in and explained what I was looking to do and that I'd need some thin leather, and they helped me out. Hopefully you can find something similar near you if you're looking to do the job..
A paint job would not go a miss, because now slapping on these new things is like putting lipstick on a sheep. None the less it is a Defender. Will love them for ever or until the bank account is empty
Hi Chris, no I haven't given up! There was COVID, then work got super busy, then I had a PC failure - As you hopefully saw, I finally managed to get everything back up and running and managed to post another video yesterday. Hope you enjoy it :)
I don't know what the model number was I'm afraid, but it was single DIN with a double-DIN fold out screen running Android 7.1. I ditched it eventually as it took nearly a minute to boot up. I've now got a Pioneer AVH-Z7200DAB which is much quicker. Sadly it's not Android so I can't install standard Android apps, but it does have built in DAB which is mostly what I use it for anyway :)
Thanks for sharing a great video. Do you know where I can get the raptor dash template please? As I bought mine from a land rover show and it didn't come with a template to cut out the bottom section of the old dashboard.
I would email them - The problem is it comes on A3 rather than A4 paper so they probably can't email it to you but hopefully they can send one in the post
Hey man wanted to ask your opinion. How hard is a defender to restore and work on? Never had a 4x4 rig but want to pick one up and build it. Just not sure how hard a defender is relatively to work on.
That's a tricky question. It mostly depends on what your skillset is, what your budget is and what tools you have. Having said that there are plenty of forums, Facebook groups and RU-vid channels where you can find help or examples. Since the design hasn't changed much for a long time, I would say they are relatively simple compared to later 4x4s
Which parts are you talking about, exactly? Do you mean the new binnacle and mount? If so, go to www.raptor-engineering.co.uk/ and tell them I sent you :)
That transfer oil was minging, might be worth changing it again soon . Great videos, love watching them, need to do my dash binical soon so will be re-watching your vid on that again.
Hello. Thank you so much for the helpful vid. I'm just about to order the works for mine. But while I'm at it could you please tell me the part number for the rev counter you installed please? I want one for my 300tdi. Many thanks
I’m brand new to land rovers after treating myself to a 110 3 months ago. You’ve really given me the confidence to do some basic stuff for myself and to diagnose the death wobble 😊 keep’ em coming. Good work!
Thanks Dan and Rift! Happy to know people are enjoying them. You're right, life does get in the way sometimes! However, I still try to find time to mess around with tools :)
